Joseph Addison is not particularly well known; he was English, a classical scholar, essayist, poet and politician, but one of his hymns was used by Benjamin Britten. in his setting of a Thomas Tallis canon. The hymn is singularly beautiful and being a composer always inspired by extramusical stimuli such as poems, nature, paintings, I was immediately convinced when I carne across the Addison hymn, that here was exactly what I wanted to use as my major source of inspiration for this piece, commissioned by and written for The Berlin Philharmonic. I don't refer to the hymn in its entirety, but have chosen the following 3 excerpts, all acting as mottos for the first three sections of the piece, thus turning the piece into a straightforward tonepoem in the classical.

Andalag # 2 - Duo for two Flutes (2011). Part of Andalag - Suite in 11 movements. Programme note: Some years ago I was asked by the Faroese ensemble Aldubaran to compose duets for the woodwinds within the ensemble. The idea then came to me to write a Suite with the name Andalag in 11 movements. 8 movements are duets and are approximately 4 min. long. 2 movements are quartets and are approximately 8 min. long, and 1 movement is an octet which is approximately 16 min. long. In other words, the Suite will last approximately 60 min. The (octet) instrumentation is 2 flutes, 2 clarinets, 2 horns and 2 bassoons. The Faroese word andalag has a multilayerd meaning. The first half of the word is anda and means to breath or spirit, and the second half of the word lag means melodi, mood or layer. I use two small ideas in this Suite. One idea is in a sort of major mood and the other in a sort of minor mood. Sunleif Rasmussen, May 2013.

Written for master flutist Robert Dick, Pan Penseroso includes a number of procedures explored in his pioneering book The Other Flute: A Performance Manual of Contemporary Techniques. Originally written for one flute, Bresnick created a two-flute version in order to make the piece accessible to a greater variety of players. This work is presented in three movements, each of which takes their titles from John Milton's poem Il Penseroso (The Contemplative Man). The music aligns itself with this response to the poets earlier L'Allegro (The Cheerful Man). Orchestra version available on rental. Duration: 24'.Pan Penseroso (2009) is a concerto for flute or two flutes and orchestra or piano inthree movements:1. The Noise of Folly2. Prophetic Strain3. More is Meant (Than Meets the Ear)Pan Penseroso and the titles of its three movements are taken from John Milton’s great poemIl Penseroso (The Contemplative Man). The music aligns itself with this response to the poet’searlier L’Allegro (the Cheerful Man). In my concerto the flutist Pan, like the mature Milton, casts a reflective musical eye on the world, renouncing all “vain deluding joyes,†so as tobetter hear the “Sweet Bird that shunn’st the noise of folly…â€Written for the master flutist Robert Dick, Pan Penseroso includes a number of proceduresexplored in.

The work, originally titled Berchtolsgader-Musik, goes back to the Cassatio ex G by Leopold Mozart, whose movements 3, 4 and 7 are identical to the Kinder-Symphonie [Children's Symphony]. For a long time, the authorship of the work was uncertain. It was attributed to Joseph Haydn and his brother Michael, at times also to Edmund Angerer and Leopold Mozart's pupil Johann Rainprechter. The work probably first received the designation Kinder-Symphonie in 1813 through an edition by the music publisher Hofmeister. In the Children's Symphony, a cuckoo, a quail and other unusual instruments are used in addition to the usual orchestral scoring. These belong to the Berchtesgaden instruments: flutes, whistles and rattles carved from wood, manufactured in the Berchtesgaden region and widely used as children's toys throughout the country. Today, these instruments can also be replaced by flutes, whistles as well as ratchets, rattles or bell trees. The piano versions of the Children's Symphony have been part of Breitkopf's orchestral materials for over a hundred years now. They are not merely piano parts, however, but full-blooded reductions for piano twohands or four-hands.

Martin Amlin’s new tour de force is a quintet composed for Leone Buyse. It is a study in textures and canonic gestures scored for 5 C Flutes, each doubling Piccolo. As with his rhythmic writing, Amlin’s movement titles are engagingly cryptic yet meaningful: 1. Apparatus, 2. Mirémi, 3. Spiral Canon. Ideal for advanced and professional flutists, the work’s intricacies create an exhilarating ten minutes.THREE INVENTIONS was premiered at Boston University on April 14, 2019 by flutists/piccoloists Matthew Lee, Jessie Wang, Courtney Regester, Pauline Jung, and Alyssa Primeau. The piece is dedicated to the composer’s longtime friend Leone Buyse.Apparatus is a little musical machine whose engine is driven by the interval of a perfect fifth. Fifths combine with each other in increasingly larger intervals in a repetitive pattern that appears at higher pitch levels with each iteration.Mirémi is constructed loosely on an ostinato consisting of the notes D and E. The two notes are passed back and forth among the instruments, combining with symmetrical patterns of faster notes.Spiral Canon is a continuous canon throughout among the five instruments. It not only spirals upward in register, but is also constantly “modulating,†spiraling twice through the entire circle of fifths.— Martin Amlin.

On November 5th, 2017, a mass shooting took place at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. Twenty-six innocent people lost their lives that day, including an unborn child. Overture to a Small Town is dedicated to these victims and the loved ones they left behind. From the biggest cities to the smallest towns, the senseless bloodshed must end. Despite the darkness of this tragedy, it is my intent through this music to portray a sense of hope, dignity, and innocence deserved by all America's cities and towns. The opening moments of this piece should be treated delicately, ensuring that the brass section moves together in one unified voice, and that the crotales evoke distant flickers of light. Similarly, in mm. 120-127, articulations in the flutes, trumpets and mallets should be strong enough to be heard, but without being aggressive. The textural layering in mm. 48-53 should be executed with machine-like precision of both rhythm and articulation. This passage should evoke the sound of many voices rising together. There should be a great contrast between the opening Piano dynamic and the final Forte dynamic. In mm. 65-69, both mallet percussionists may play the indicated notes in any octave they choose. Both players should move rapidly between notes in any order. This passage should sound fluid and ethereal. In mm. 69-73: If there is no English Horn available to the ensemble, the Trumpet should play this passage solo. If there is an English Horn, both instruments should play the passage together. On November 5th, 2017, a mass shooting took place at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas. To mark its 50th anniversary, the Flute Society of Washington commissioned Daniel Dorff to compose a celebratory work for large flute ensemble, to premiere en masse at its 2016 convention. Dorff responded with Fireworks, a 5-minute dazzler scored for 2 piccolos, 4 C flutes, 2 altos, 2 basses, and 1 contrabass. In describing performance of Fireworks, Dorff says: Real pyrotechnic fireworks typically shoot upward quickly and neatly, pop at the top, and then cascade downward slowly in a beautifully out-of-sync descent. Fireworks has many passages musically depicting this crisp upward whoosh exploding into downward sprinkles, often punctuated by a pop at the top.PERFORMANCE SUGGESTIONS1) FIREWORKS may be performed by any size ensemble ranging from 11 soloists up to a large festival choir. It may be preferable to keep the piccolos at one player per part even when the other parts have multiple players.2) Real pyrotechnic fireworks typically shoot upward quickly and neatly, pop at the top, and then cascade downward slowly in a beautifully out-of-sync descent. FIREWORKS has many passages musically depicting this crisp upward whoosh exploding into downward sprinkles, often punctuated by a pop at the top.3) All dynamics are relative to the whole blend, and some performance situations may require attention and adjustments to keep the balance as notated.4) The “puh†effect with x-shaped noteheads in the Bass and Contrabass parts is a beatbox technique sounding similar to pizzicato. There is naturally-produced flute pitch along with the percussive attack.5) “Like tolling bells†(bar 191 onward) indicates a rapid decay of each note, like church bells. This will help the antiphonal echo beginning in bar 195, and the seating placement may also enhance the antiphonal effect.

Royal Coronation Dances is the first sequel to the Fanfare Ode & Festival, both being settings of dance music originally arranged by Gervaise in the mid 16th-century (the next sequel is The Renaissance Fair, which uses music of Susato and Praetorius). Fanfare Ode & Festival has been performed by many tens of thousands of students, both in high school and junior high school. I have heard that some of them are amazed that the music they are playing was first played and danced to over 400 years ago. Some students tend to think that music started with Handel and his Messiah to be followed by Beethoven and his Fifth Symphony, with naught in between or before of consequence. Although Royal Coronation Dances is derived from the same source as Fanfare Ode & Festival, they are treated in different ways. I envisioned this new suite programmatically -- hence the descriptive movement titles, which I imagined to be various dances actually used at some long-ago coronation. The first movement depicts the guests, both noble and common, flanked by flag and banner bearers, arriving at the palace to view the majestic event. They are festive, their flags swirling the air, their cloaks brightly colored. In the second movement, the queen in stately measure moves to take her place on the throne as leader and protector of the realm. In the third movement, the jesters of the court entertain the guests with wild games of sport. Musically, there are interesting sonorities to recreate. Very special attention should be given to the tambourine/tenor drum part in the first movement. Their lively rhythms give the movement its power. Therefore they should be played as distinctly and brilliantly as possible. The xylophone and glockenspiel add clarity, but must not be allowed to dominate. Observe especially the differing dynamics; the intent is to allow much buzzing bass to penetrate. The small drum (starting at meas. 29) should be played expressively, with attention to the notated articulations, with the brass light and detached, especially in a lively auditorium. It is of some further interest that the first dance is extremely modal. The original is clearly in G mixolydian mode (scale: G-A-B-C-D-E-F-G). However, other editors might put in F-sharps in many places (changing the piece almost to G major), in the belief that such ficta would have been automatically put in by the 16th-century performers as they played. I doubt it. I have not only eschewed these within the work, but even at the cadences. So this arrangement is most distinctly modal (listen to the F-naturals in meas. 22 and 23, for instance), with all the part-writing as Gervaise wrote it. In the second movement, be careful that things do not become too glued together. In the 16th century this music might have been played by a consort of recorders, instruments very light of touch and sensitive to articulation. Concert band can easily sound heavy, and although this movement has been scored for tutti band, it must not sound it. It is essential, therefore, that you hear all the instruments, with none predominating. Only when each timbre can be heard separately and simultaneously will the best blend occur, and consequently the greatest transparency. So aim for a transparent, spacious tutti sound in this movement. Especially have the flutes, who do this so well, articulate rather sharply, so as to produce a chiffing sound, and do not allow the quarter-notes to become too tied together in the entire band. The entrance of the drums (first tenor, then bass) are events and as such should be audible. Incidentally, this movement begins in F Major and ends in D Minor: They really didn't care so much about those things then. The third movement (one friend has remarked that it is the most Margolisian of the bunch, but actually I am just getting subtler, I hope) again relies upon the percussion (and the scoring) to make its points. Xylophone in this movement is meant to be distinctly audible. Therefore, be especially sure that the xylophone player is secure in the part, and also that the tambourine and toms sound good. This movement must fly or it will sink, so rev up the band and conduct it in 1 for this mixolydian jesting. I suppose the wildly unrelated keys (clarinets and then brass at the end) would be a good 16th-century joke, but to us, our put-up-the-chorus-a-half-step ears readily accept such shenanigans. Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Full Score, 1 Piccolo, 4 Flute 1, 4 Flute 2 & 3, 2 Oboe 1 & 2, 2 Bassoon 1 & 2, 1 Eb Clarinet, 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 2 Eb Alto Clarinet, 1 Eb Contra Alto Clarinet, 3 Bb Bass & Bb Contrabass Clarinet, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 1, 2 Eb Alto Saxophone 2, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 2 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Trumpet 1, 3 Bb Trumpet 2, 3 Bb Trumpet 3, 4 Horn in F 1 & 2, 2 Trombone 1, 4 Trombone 2 & 3, 3 Euphonium (B.C.), 2 Euphonium (T.C.), 4 Tuba, 1 String Bass, 1 Timpani (optional), 2 Xylophone & Glockenspiel, 5 Percussion.

The Requiem of Gabriel Faure is now available in two versions: in the symphonic version which was completed in 1900 and in a version with small orchestra of 1889. The symphonic version of Gabriel Faure's Requiem, published in 1901, was the product of a 13-year compositional process. Starting from the original five-movement form for strings, harp and organ, the composer wrote two additional movements, one after the other, and expanded the instrumentation in various stages for later performances. The present reconstruction of a version with small orchestra differs from other such attempts in that for the first time it presents the work not in a mixed version, but rather in the unified form from 1889. This is distinguished from the final version both in musical terms, as well as through the fact that it forgoes the use of flutes, clarinets and bassoons, while employing only two horns instead of four. With a critical Report with information about the source situation and the edition, and containing the individual readings (alternative readings, etc.). Since in 1889 the Offertoire was still without the choral section the present edition contains the Offertoire of the final version as appendix. Now available in carus music, the choir app. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2731100.

Preceding Johann Sebastian Bach, Charpentier is the most important master who turned to setting the Hymn to the Virgin Mary, the Magnificat. No less than ten works, in differing vocal and instrumental scoring and form comprise this genre. In the present Magnificat H 78 for five voices (in which alto and bass also have solo roles), two flutes, strings and basso continuo, each of the individual movements contains its own expressive profile in sound. The work was composed around 1690 for the Jesuits in Paris. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2102300.

At the Dresden Court a motetto pastorale replaced the offertorium at the Christmas Masses, between the Credo and the Sanctus. The present work O admirabile mysterium is distinguished by its scoring, unusual for Ristori, for two soprano and two alto voices. The association with Arcadian pastoral music, a principal element of Italian nativity scenes, is emphasized by the use of flutes and oboes. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2740400.
