The name says it all in this swingin' piece featuring the trombone section with a brassy attitude. It's a twelve bar, B-flat blues tune that gives the trombones a chance to shine with both unison and harmonized lines. The trumpets and saxes add in with complimentary hits and counter melodies. The piece works great as an easy laid back swing or with an up tempo groove. The ranges are modest but everyone in audience will know if some have a 'bone to pick with them! $7.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Bassoon, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violoncello SKU: PR.16400261S Compose...(+)
Bassoon, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violoncello SKU: PR.16400261S Composed by Dan Welcher. With Standard notation. Duration 15 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #164-00261S. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.16400261S). UPC: 680160038411. Since the bassoon is my own instrument, many people have asked me why I've written so little for the instrument. Beyond my early Concerto Da Camera for bassoon and small orchestra, written for Leonard Sharrow in 1975, I've not written a single piece that features the bassoon as a solo vehicle (though I have written three woodwind quintets). When I first began composing seriously, critics were quick to point out that my orchestral writing revealed nothing of my roots as a woodwind player--and bassoonists asked why my pieces didn't have more bassoon solos. Perhaps I was so aware that people were looking at me as a bassoonist/composer that I was determined to remove that stigma. Now that my transformation from performer to composer is complete, however, it's time to re-address my instrument. I wanted this new piece to be serious rather than whimsical. The Wind Won't Listen represents my return to the bassoon as the highly expressive, poetic soul that it is. As such, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the piece is based on a poem, and that the title of the piece as well as both its movement titles come from lines in that poem. I first read Beth Gylys' poem Split at the MacDowell Colony in the summer of 2001, and it made a big impression on me. My personal life had been ruptured by divorce in the preceding year. This poem, with its dry insistence on observation rather than feeling, expressed the wrung-out state of my emotions at the time better than any I had seen. I set it to music, as a song, immediately. In this format, for voice and piano, I was able to put a musical note to every word of the poem. The first lines of the poem, Everyone I know is crying, or should be crying, became a melody that haunted me even without the words. The work for bassoon and string quartet is an outgrowth of the song. The first movement is labeled Romanza, and has a loose formal arch structure of A-B-C-B-A, with B and C being fast sections framed by the lamenting A music. In addition to hearing the bassoon's first notes attached to the lines Everyone I know is crying, there's a sense of agitation, of loss, of longing, and at times of desperation in the music. At one point, the opening theme from Tristan even appears in the strings. The second movement follows, without a real pause--the pizzicato final chords of the first movement becoming the increasingly aggressive opening chords of the second. The recitative is actually a foreshadowing of the basic theme that will be varied, again to the words of the song: Life makes itself without us. Don't let me tell you how it is. Go out. Look. The recitative begins in an anguished state, but subsides into more gentle singing by the end, when it simply falls into an ostinato 5/8-3/4 pattern to begin the variations. Marked Very steady tempo; Dancing, this set of variations consists of three dances, each faster than the previous. The first, in the aforementioned 5/8-3/4 meter, gives way to a 3/8 scherzo, which in turn takes on a furious 2/4 scurrying motion. The music becomes breathless, almost pulse-less, and an ethereal theme appears in the violins while the rushing music continues, sotto voce in the bassoon. This new theme is also from the song: Why do I do this? The wind won't listen. The bassoon re-states its Everyone I know is crying melody from the first movement, and at length the 5/8-3/4 music returns, more subdued this time. The piece ends on a major-minor chord, suspended. The Wind Won't Listen is dedicated to the man who commissioned it, bassoonist Steven Dibner--who shares my passion for poetry and language. --Dan Welcher. $41.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

The idea of an entire spectra existing out of the range of human perception was a large influencing factor for George Sweet in the composition of this piece. Richly scored for the modern concert band, Black Light is written in a post-minimalist style and is also heavily influenced by the work of American composers Steve Reich, John Adams, and Philip Glass. Black light is defined as infrared or ultraviolet light which is invisible to the naked eye. The idea of an entire spectra existing out of the range of human perception was an influencing factor on the composition of the piece. Black Light is written in a post-minimalist style and is also heavily influenced by the work of American composers Steve Reich, John Adams, and Philip Glass. This begins with strict motor accompaniment. Take care to maintain equal balance among the different “moving parts†so that they blend to create a solid whole both here and throughout the piece. The primary thematic material is stated by the trumpets and horns at m. 12. This material is the basis for much of the harmonic and thematic material that follows. A slightly varied statement of the main theme is presented again at m. 26 with a different type of motor accompaniment. This leads to a B-section at m. 44, which is a bold fanfare-like presentation of the main material. Another series of variations on the main theme begins at m. 50 and incorporates many different textural and harmonic ideas in the accompaniment. Once again, be careful to not let any one “moving part†overwhelm another and keep the texture evenly balanced.  A second, broader presentation of the B-section occurs at m. 90 and leads to a subdued C-section at m. 100 with new melodic material presented in the trumpet. A whimsical march-like section pushes to the return of the introductory motor material at m. 131. A final heroic presentation of the main thematic material results in a somewhat ambiguous coda, which brings the piece to a dramatic conclusion. $95.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

UPC: 798408099145. 9x12 inches. Key: D major. The title Lucky Seven is a play on the fact that portions of this piece are in 7/8 time grouped in 2+2+3. It gives it a really fresh groove as the piece floats in and out of this 7/8 riff into regular 4/4 time. There is even a nice solo section with a sample solo if some of your students want to take a stab at improvisation. Matt Turner always provides teachers with interesting alternative music that can teach students how to groove and improvise. This is an infectious piece that students will like to play. Lucky Seven is in arch form (ABCBA). The A-section begins in and moves to a pop-music feel in the B- section (m. 21). An Afro-Cuban tumba bass-line figure is introduced in the C-section (m. 33). A sample solo (m. 53) is provided, but soloists are encouraged to improvise using an A-Mixolydian mode (A, B, C≥, D, E, F≥, G, A). The improvisations should be rhythmic. Feel free to borrow ideas from any of the composed material to assist in creating the improvisations. Perform with energy! Orchestra Cello, Contrabass, Piano, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3 - Grade 2.5 SKU: CF.YAS171 Composed by Larry Clark. SWS FS. Young String Orchestra. Set of Score and Parts. UPC: 680160904013. 9 x 12 inches. Key: G major. Dream Engine has all of the compositional thumb prints that have made the music of Larry Clark so popular for string orchestras. It is a concert overture in classic ABA form. The opening section has a tuneful melody over spiccato accompaniments that weaves throughout the ensemble. The middle B section is slow, lyrical, lush, and beautiful as a contrast to the lighter A section. Another piece from Larry Clark to showcase your ensemble at contest/festival. One of the types of pieces I like to write for orchestra are pieces that use a contrast between staccato playing and more marcato melodic material. Dream Engine is the result. The piece is set in a concert overture form with two fast sections based on the same theme and a slow lyrical second section in the middle. The piece begins right off with a short introduction of the spiccato accompaniment figures before it leads to the first statement of the main theme. Quarter notes in the main theme should be played full bow in contrast to the lilting staccato eighth notes. The bass line should be long as well. After a full ensemble statement of the theme, the piece moves to a bridge theme that is sort of an inversion of the main theme and is taken up by the cello; then the viola is added on a harmony part to the melody. Transition material is presented next that is used throughout the piece to connect all of the sections of the piece together. The main theme returns once more before the piece transitions into the slow and lyrical B-section. The B-section should be lush and as legato as possible to be in complete contrast to the A-section. This will be an excellent chance to work on the players’ expressive playing. Make sure to have a lot of rubato and generous rises and falls to the lines to make it as musical aspossible. At the completion of the B-section, the A-material returns with different orchestration for variety. This is followed by the transition material that leads to an aggressive coda that includes a brief quote from the B-section material. If you so chose, a slight increase in the tempo at the coda is acceptable to add to excitement of the ending. It has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to write this piece. I hope you and your students enjoy it and find it useful for your program.—Larry ClarkLakeland, FL 2017. UPC: 798408094676. 9 x 12 inches. Key: G major. If you are looking to work on the musicality of your ensemble this year, look no further than this beautiful new piece from composer George Sweet. Lush harmonies and cascading sounds make this a wonderful piece of music. It is contemporary and fresh and uses all of the forces of the string orchestra to great effect. An elegant choice for your next concert or festival performance. The title, A Silent Echo, refers to the lasting influence, or echo, that a singular event can have on the period of time following it. These echoes can result from events which range from triumphant to tragic. The resulting echo has a lasting influence, which can still be felt, on both private and public levels, long after the causal event has transpired. The piece opens with a series of inverted pyramid chords. Make sure that each voice is balanced properly with the others, so that all of the notes of the resulting chord blend together evenly. The main theme appears at m. 9 in the first violins. Once again, be careful to balance this section so that the resulting dissonances fit within the chord. The second violins play the melody at m. 19, which leads to a short B-section at m. 29. Be careful not to lose momentum when playing the pyramid chords directly preceding the B-material. After both A- and B-themes are presented again, new material occurs at m. 54 and leads the piece through a vibrant C-section that reaches a climax at m. 63. Both A- and B-themes are then restated which brings the piece to a quiet and subdued close. ISBN 9781491146675. UPC: 680160904174. 9 x 12 inches. Key: E minor. Triangle of the Tempest is a fast-moving composition with interesting rhythmic challenges and dynamic color shifts. Starting with syncopated figures over a repeated eight-measure progression, the piece builds in intensity as more sections and layers are added. The second part changes tone and is led by a heroic violin melody with a soaring cello obligato. The themes intertwine and the material develops into a dramatic conclusion with a final explosive ensemble hit. Action-packed and full of rhythmic drive, this piece is a good choice for contest or festival performance. An up-tempo 3â„4 piece in E minor, Triangle of the Tempest features inviting rhythmic challenges, provocative melodic variations and dynamic color shifts .The A-section is based on a repeating eight-measure harmonic progression with punctuated open voicings and syncopated figures . Each section builds in intensity as new elements are added in subsequent eight-measure increments . Rhythmically, the pattern in the A-section (mm . 1–36) follows a two-measure form: the first of the two measures has a dotted quarter-eighth syncopated figure, and the rhythms in the second measure fall primarily on the beats . After the main eight-measure pattern is established, the A-melody and its variations are introduced on top of it .A two-measure build (mm . 35–36), highlighted by fast moving ensemble triplet figures, propels the piece as it crescendos into the jubilant B-section (mm . 37–52), changing tone and moving to the relative G major . The violins carry the soaring melody atop sonorous major chords in the mid and low strings . Rhythmically, the alternating syncopated measure/non-syncopated measure form continues through this section .Returning to the dramatic E minor A-section phrases in mm . 53–86, the piece shifts to the original eight-measure harmonic progression with melodic variations in the violins over the top . After reprising the B-section (mm . 87–102), intertwining motifs at m . 103 offer a variation on the A-theme where the melodic entrances happen at one-measure intervals .The tempo slows slightly and the tone changes again in the flowing and magical C-section at m . 123 as the piece moves again to the relative G major . Repeating lyrical legato violin lines create the musical background for a majestic viola melody, featured in mm . 126–146 . A brief fanfare statement with motifs spread throughout the orchestra at m . 153, prepares the return to E minor and the A-theme in mm . 160–193 .Measure 194 introduces an E-pedal point and tension builds, ramping up emotionally to the ending . The ensemble thunders at m . 202 as the violins and violas begin a four-measure syncopated question/answer section with the cellos and basses . The phrases crescendo and build for another four measures at m . 206, setting up the driving unison, tutti figures at m . 211 and a final explosive hit on the downbeat of m . 212 . Orchestra Cello, Contrabass, Piano, Viola, Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3 - Grade 4 SKU: CF.CAS79 Composed by George Sweet. Carl Fischer Concert String Orchestra Series. Set of Score and Parts. With Standard notation. 24+24+6+15+7+15+10+16 pages. Duration 4 minutes, 34 seconds. Carl Fischer Music #CAS79. Published by Carl Fischer Music (CF.CAS79). ISBN 9780825894800. UPC: 798408094805. 9 x 12 inches. Key: D major. Hold on tight, this is a tour de force for more advanced groups. With a slew of contemporary compositional elements including mixed-meter, extended harmonies, and angular rhythms, this piece contains a fullness that composer George Sweet's works are known for. It's challenging, but the musical rewards abound. A bazaar is an enclosed marketplace or street where various merchants and craftsmen sell their wares. The image of a crowded bazaar in a land far away was the inspiration for the piece. The variety of different people, cultures, and merchandise present in a bazaar allowed for a piece that has many different styles, moods, and characters (both humorous and serious). After the introduction, which represents the grand entrance of the bazaar, the main theme is presented by the violin 1 at m. 15. The meter changes frequently throughout the piece, but the eighth note stays constant. Be careful to subdivide the different time signatures carefully, as these changing meters occur. A melodic and flowing B-theme occurs at m. 37. After a varied restatement of both themes, new material occurs at m. 63. This C-section contrasts with the rhythmic activity thus far and should be played as legato and as sustained as possible. Be careful to time the divisi entrances and the pyramid-style chords in this section correctly, in order to keep the tempo secure. The rhythmic A- and B-themes return at m. 83 in a varied form, and lead to a climactic passage. The tempo changes that occur from mm. 105 to 114 are very slight and are open to the interpretation of the conductor. Feel free to move the tempo throughout this section using the markings as a guideline. The desired effect is one of pushing and pulling the tempo through this section. The introduc- tory material returns at m. 114 and brings the piece to a close. Chamber Music alto Flute SKU: PR.114423380 Composed by Christine Potter. Performance Score. 4 pages. Duration 3 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #114-42338. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114423380). ISBN 9781491135129. UPC: 680160686988. Inspired by her friends’ beatboxing and exploration of jazz, flutist Chris Potter joins the fun and brings us along in this introduction to swing rhythm and the basics of beatboxing. Playing off the multiple meanings of “mode†and “à la modeâ€, Dr. Potter fashionably explores a world of varied scales and modern percussive sonorities where the ch- ch- ch- beatboxing attack leads players to chant about ch-ch-chocolate!. A Few Words from ChrisThis title came to me out of nowhere at 4 AM one morning, and I just had to write a piece to go along with it! I love words with multiple meanings, and “mode†has three! The French term à la mode means in a current, fashionable style: in other words, popular. The alto flute certainly fits that description! For Americans, the phrase is used when describing the dessert pie à la mode, meaning pie with ice cream, typically vanilla. Pie à la mode has an interesting history! The phrase and the American dessert is attributed to John Gieriet. He was born in Switzerland, later moved to France, and must have studied cooking because two years after moving to the U.S. in 1854, Gieriet was put in charge of all the food service at the White House. He served under two presidents, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan. When that job ended, he moved to Duluth, Minnesota and bought a hotel. In 1885, a menu for the hotel offered a dessert called pie à la mode, the first time this phrase had appeared in print. Originally it was blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream. In music, the term mode means a series of notes that have an identifiable pattern of intervals encompassing an octave. Major and minor scales are modes, as are other scale forms such as pentatonic, dorian, phrygian, and lydian. ALTO À LA MODE uses three modes, all based on D. In this piece, you will find the D blues scale (D F G Ab A C D), the D dorian (D E F G A B C D), and the D minor natural form (D E F G A Bb C D).In addition to the three melodic modes, I wanted a rhythmic idea or two to unify the piece. I decided touse the rhythms of the word vanilla: three short notes with emphasis on the second note, and chocolate: two short notes with emphasis on the first note. Also please notice that the spoken syllable cha is the beginning sound of chocolate! All this and no calories!I credit my fabulous friend Ali Ryerson for the jazz influence, and the wonderful composer Nicole Chamberlain for the beatboxing inspiration. $8.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

Duration 16 minutes. Theodore Presser Company #114-41998. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114419980). UPC: 680160681723. 9 x 12 inches. The ancient Egyptian empire began around 3100 B.C. and continued for over 3000 years until Alexander the Great conquered the country in 332 B.C. Over the centuries, the Egyptian empire grew and flourished into a highly developed society. They invented hieroglyphics, built towering pyramids (including the Great Pyramid of Giza, the oldest of the Seven Wonders of the World), and the created many household items we still use today, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, eyeliner, black ink, and the forerunner of modern-day paper. Included among their achievements were a series of highly developed funerary practices and beliefs in the Afterlife. As the average lifespan of an Egyptian hovered around 30 years, living past the death of oneAs physical body was a legitimate concern. Egyptians believed that upon death, their souls would undertake a harrowing journey through the Netherworld. If they survived the horrific creatures and arduous trials that awaited them, then their souls would be reunified with their bodies (hence the need to preserve the body through mummification) and live forever in a perfect version of the life they had lived in Egypt. To achieve this, Egyptians devised around 200 magical spells and incantations to aid souls on the path to the Afterlife. These spells are collectively called The Book of the Dead. Particular spells would be chosen by the family of the deceased and inscribed on the tombAs walls and scrolls of papyrus, as well as on a stone scarab placed over the deceasedAs heart. Subsequent collections of spells and mortuary texts, such as The Book of Gates, assisted a soul in navigating the twelve stages of the Netherworld. Not only did these spells protect and guide the soul on this dangerous path, but they also served as a safeguard against any unbecoming behavior an Egyptian did while alive. For instance, if a person had robbed another while alive, there was a spell that would prevent the soulAs heart from revealing the truth when in the Hall of Judgment. Rites for the Afterlife follows the path of a soul to the Afterlife. In Inscriptions from the Book of the Dead (movement 1), the soul leaves the body and begins the journey, protected by spells and incantations written on the tombAs walls. In Passage though the Netherworld (movement 2), the soul is now on a funerary barque, being towed through the Netherworld by four of the regionAs inhabitants. We hear the soul slowly chanting incantations as the barque encounters demons, serpents, crocodiles, lakes of fire, and other terrors. The soul arrives at The Hall of Judgment in movement 3. Standing before forty-two divine judges, the soul addresses each by name and gives a A!negative confessionA(r) connected to each judge (i.e. A!I did not rob,A(r) A!I did not do violence,A(r) and so on). Afterwards, the soulAs heart is put on a scale to be weighed against a feather of MaAat, the goddess of truth. If the heart weighs more than the feather, it will be eaten by Ammut, a hideous creature that lies in wait below the scale, and the soul will die a second and permanent death (this was the worst fear of the Egyptians). But if the heart is in balance with the feather, the soul proceeds onward. The final stage of the journey is the arrival at The Field of Reeds (movement 4), which is a perfect mirror image of the soulAs life in ancient Egypt. The soul reunites with deceased family members, makes sacrifices to the Egyptian gods and goddess, harvests crops from plentiful fields of wheat under a brilliant blue sky, and lives forever next to the abundant and nourishing waters of the Nile. Rites for the Afterlife was commissioned by the Barlow Endowment on behalf of the Akropolis Reed Quintet, Calefax Reed Quintet, and the Brigham Young University Reed Quintet. -S.G. $53.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
