The Requiem of Gabriel Faure is now available in two versions: in the symphonic version which was completed in 1900 and in a version with small orchestra of 1889. The symphonic version of Gabriel Faure's Requiem, published in 1901, was the product of a 13-year compositional process. Starting from the original five-movement form for strings, harp and organ, the composer wrote two additional movements, one after the other, and expanded the instrumentation in various stages for later performances. The present reconstruction of a version with small orchestra differs from other such attempts in that for the first time it presents the work not in a mixed version, but rather in the unified form from 1889. This is distinguished from the final version both in musical terms, as well as through the fact that it forgoes the use of flutes, clarinets and bassoons, while employing only two horns instead of four. With a critical Report with information about the source situation and the edition, and containing the individual readings (alternative readings, etc.). Since in 1889 the Offertoire was still without the choral section the present edition contains the Offertoire of the final version as appendix. In Chinese paintings, they are featured characters; in Chinese literature, they are praised as symbols against evil influences and unhealty trends. Chen Yi admires their beautiful appearances and their strong spirit and expresses their feelings through their music, which combines Chinese and Western musical materials and medium. The silence between the gestures is like the space in brush painting and calligraphy.Song in Winter is a trio written for harpsichord, dizi (bamboo flute) and zheng (Chinese zither). My idea for this piece came from the pine and the bamboo. Such persistent and dauntless trees! Standing in the frigid winter, they are evergreens. In Chinese paintings, they are the featured characters, while in Chinese literature, they are praised as symbols against evil influences and unhealthy trends. I admire their beautiful appearances and their strong spirit. I express my feelings through my music, which combines Chinese and Western musical materials and media. Using the harpsichord, an old Western instrument, and the zheng and dizi, two old Chinese instruments, I mix keyboard, plucking and blowing instruments into a whole. The silence between the gestures is like the space in Chinese brush painting and calligraphy. Although I have been living in a western society for seven years, I have found my thinking closely linked with Chinese arts. I merged them into my musical language in the trio. Song in Winter was commissioned and inspired by Prof. Joyce Lindorff, the winner of the Pro Musicis Foundation's international competition, for her March 23, 1994 concert at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in New York, sponsored by the Foundation. It is dedicated to Ms. Lindorff and Ms. Susan Cheng, the founder and executive director of Music From China, who has been enthusiastically supporting Chinese new music in New York for many years. The work has been recorded on the album “Sparkle: Chamber Music of Chen Yi†on CRI, released in New York in 1999. The trio has also been adapted for quartet: flute, zheng (Chinese zither), piano and percussion, for ALEA III, for the premiere concert in Feb. 4, 1994, in Boston.—Chen Yi(born in China, 1953).

Puccini's first known sacred work was composed during his school days at the Istituto Pacini in Lucca. It was first performed there in 1877. The text was a hymn to the Patron Saint of Lucca which was probably written by the composer himself. The work was so popular that by 1880 it had received three further performances, though it was also inserted in the Messa a 4 voci, after the Credo. Thereafter it disappeared from the music world and was only first rediscovered in the 1990s. Since, with the exception of the lack of a solo tenor in the piece, it is identical with this one in the Messa, for this reason it would seem only natural to perform these two works together. The two-part cantata from Bach's third cycle of cantatas was performed for the first time on 4 August 1726 (the 7th Sunday after Trinity). The large-scale opening chorus for full forces to a text from Psalm 104 shows in its formal diversity Bach at the height of his powers. The second part of the cantata begins with a biblical text (Matthew 6, 31 ff.), not as a choral movement here, but as an extended bass arioso (Vox Christi). A meditative soprano aria with solo oboe forms the high point of the second part. Bach re-used the opening chorus, both the arias and even the bass arioso later in the G minor Mass BWV 235.
