The first part of Ernst Pepping's Choralsuite is a setting of Martin Luther's three-verse hymn, written to replace the Latin Credo in the Reformation German mass. Luther also adapted Catholic statements ('unam sanctam catholicam ecclesiam' was changed to 'die ganz Christenheit auf Erden' [the whole Christian church on earth]) as well as incorporating a number of his own theological convictions. Pepping orientates his highly contrapuntal choral texture to the vocal style of the 16th and 17th centuries and uses traditional church modes.

The story of Bastien und Bastienne is based on the musical pastoral Le Devin du Village by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. The play was hugely popular in paraphrase and translation and entered the repertoires of travelling companies and children's theaters. A shepherd succumbs to the enticements of the lady of the castle and tries to abandon his beloved. The village soothsayer appeals to his conscience and advises the abandoned Bastienne to feign coyness until Bastien shamefacedly returns to her. Mozart's version, composed in Vienna in the summer of 1768, is based on a text by Friedrich Wilhelm Weiskern that had been in existence since 1764. On his return to Salzburg, he undertook an ultimately unfinished revision of the work, improving the textual underlay and replacing the spoken dialogue with recitative. He also changed the vocal register of Colas and probably that of Bastien as well. The Carus edition is the first to treat these two versions separately.

This publication is a completely revised edition of our five-volume guitar tutor. In the decades since the first edition, the musical interests of our students and their practice possibilities have changed. To adapt to this, we have partly expanded and partly reduced the musical and technical material of the tutor. We have increased the number of recital pieces at all levels of difficulty, so that our students can spend longer on a varied repertoire at their respective level. We have first of all selected works from the Viennese classics for this purpose but have also enriched the repertoire of the tutor with numerous pieces from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. In volumes I and II of the tutor we have given Hungarian folk songs and children's songs a significant amount of space. In the course of revision, we have expanded the material of these two volumes with simple arrangements of folk songs, nursery rhymes and flower songs, and we have provided very easy, but valuable material for instrumental study in particular for children aged between 6 and 10. We have also expanded the chamber music material to be found at the end of the volumes, because we believe that playing music together is the best way to make instrumental study a lasting experience for our students. The parts are relatively simple, sothe works provide a musical experience almost immediately.

Autres chants (Other songs) is a cycle of five lieder for 3-part women's choir and obligato piano, by which I mean that the piano takes part in the musical development following the tradition of the German lied. As for the text, having worked quite a while on 'real' poems (Reverdy, Victor Hugo, du Bouchet, Dupin), I returned here to my own texts, written specifically for music in the 60s and which I had then set in a work called 'Mots' (1963). It was already about love, pain and play... but sixty years later, the world had changed a lot and the words didn't quite have the same meaning. So there is nothing here that recalls the initial work. Hence also the need today to give evocative titles to the five pieces of this cycle: - Neigees (Snowy traces) - Meme pas peur (Hardly scared) - Oh ne plus... (Oh no longer...) - N'es mien (Aren't mine) - D'elle? (Of her?).

In a well-balanced stand, the weight of the stand increases toward the bottom. However, we faced a contradiction when trying to use steel material, which transfers vibration better than aluminium, near the actual cymbal itself. Our unconventional stand utilizes a lower center of gravity u hence the bottom of the center pipe of the stand gets very close to the floor to provide better balance to the stand. With minor changes in 2017, we changed the joint part from zinc die cast to aluminum and also from aluminum pipe to steel pipe. Thus we managed to maintain the light weight, but greatly improved the sound and balance of the stand.

SONATA per il Flauto traverso solo senza Basso, da C.F.E. Bach appeared in 1763 in the fourth quarter publication of Musikalisches Mancherley, a musical quarterly printed in Berlin. In transcribing the work for trombone, Sauer has changed the original key of A minor to C minor and has revised the order of the movements to a more typical fast-slow-fast pattern. This work in three movements is suitable for advanced performers.

The St. John Passion ranks alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio, the Magnificat and the B minor Mass as one of the great vocal works from Johann Sebastian Bach's Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he substantially revised the general concept of the piece and also changed numerous details. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources and thus present the work in a form which was never heard during Bach's lifetime. Consequently, the wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version by Bach could not be easily achieved. The present critical, new edition of the St. John Passion fulfills this wish and for the first time makes available the complete music of the second version of the work as it was performed under Bach's direction in 1725. Since a number of movements were replaced by others, including the opening chorus, this version differs most dramatically from the standard version which is well known today. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3124500.

Per Norgard BACH TO THE FUTUREFor many years I have been specially fascinated by three of the preludes of Bach's Well-tempered Piano, and I wish with this concerto-version for percussion-duo and orchestra to highlight some of the structural aspects of these pieces: It is my belief that there is a tradition in the music history, that makes it possible to let certain germs in an earlier period unfold into new, but not heterogenious, dimensions of a perhaps several hundred years later phase of the tradition. This concerto is a result of several years collaboration with Uffe Savery and Morten Friis (Safri-Duo), as well in original compositions - (Resonances, Repercussion, Resume in EchoZone I-III) as in arrangements of the 3 Bach preludes, preparing for the enormous stylistic challenges of this work.A few introductory comments to each movement:I Movement: The archetypal sequence of broken chords within C-major has established itself as almost a cultural code, allowing the composer of 1996 to tell his tale-in-tones only by stressing and colouring the tones in the original piece without changing the pitches or (relative) durations as a 'palimpsest' containing as well the old as the new musical tale simultaneously. Later in the movement, this singleline is multiplied by the, till then discrete, but permanently pervading, proportion - throughout the piece - very close to the 'Golden Section'(= 3:5:8.t.i:8 before repetition, 5 before starting anew from the deepest tone, 3 as the rest etc. unchanged). The 3 tonal levels as well as the 3 relative speeds are treated according to these proportions for certain passages, but even in those the main focal point is directed at the freely invented melody (by me) incarnating itself solely by the unpermutad sequels of the original prelude.II Movement: One feature of the F sharp-prelude pervades all the six minutes-long second movement: A 4 times identical rhythmic pattern = 6:4:3:2:3:4:6 - as an hourglass-shaped timeshape - inspired me by the closeness of this pattern to a shape within the infinity-drumming of my invention, called Wide-Fan and Narrow-Fan , referring to pattern consisting of 8:4:2:1:2:4:8, the familiarity with the above - quoted one being obvious. New and old elaborations of this pattern-pair permeates the movement, especially since the Safri-Duo by their performance of my Repercussion had augmented my appetite for including this idiom in a wider context:III Movement: Without the existence of the d-minor-prelude I doubt that I would have dared to write a work like this, since it is the inexhaustible, rare quality and pecularity of this piece, which has stimulated my feeling of wonder and 'modernity' (or: eternity!) of this piece, of which I know of no equal in its special respect: the perpetual ambiguity of melodic foothold in the rhythmic ostinato of a broken descending triad, co.

The Four Quartets op. 92 were composed in 1884 during Brahms' summer's stay in Murzzuschlag (Styria). The opening piece, however, was a revision of an earlier vocal quartet composed in 1877. Brahms had announced this to his friend Elisabeth von Herzogenberg on 13 November 1877 as a bad joke on music paper with which he was reacting to her reproach regarding an earlier lied (op. 71 No. 4) with an ironic text insertion before the beginning of the reprise. In the revision of 1884, Brahms significantly changed the C-major middle section especially. In the present edition's appendix, the early version of O schone Nacht! is disclosed for rediscovery in comparison with the version published as op. 92 no. 1. The quartets were published on 1 December 1884 by Simrock, one week later, the first public performance of the work took place in the Large Gurzenich Hall in Cologne. The pieces found their primary target audience, however, in private performances as domestic music. Even today, they recommend themselves for smaller choral scorings or ensembles with piano accompaniment. The night-time melancholic text selection with works by Daumer, Hebbel and Goethe seems fit for these.
