With his Venti pezzi per pianoforte (1938), the Hungarian composer Sándor Veress (1907-92) wanted to create a collection of piano miniatures on folk melodies destined for use in the concert hall as well as for teaching purposes. Each piece is based on one or more songs and dances from different Hungarian speaking areas, which are re-elaborated and presented in a carefully conceived alternation of character, musical writing and technical difficulty. The result is a multi-colored overview of Hungarian folk music: songs of a pathetic or even dramatic nature are contrasted with lighter and high-spirited pieces, interspersed with dances of varying types, among which a homogeneousblock stands out formed by the group of Csárdás, a typical tavern dance also used by Liszt. The Venti pezzi per pianoforte represent the culmination of the extensive ethnomusicological research made by Veress in the ’30s and ‘40s, while working as assistant to László Lajtha and to Béla Bartók, and at the same time carrying out field work in Hungary and neighboring countries. The composer intended that this collection should play a fundamental role of mediation between folklore and western “art” music, by revitalizing the language from within, without resorting to the abstractions of the experimentation being developed in Europe at the time. During his lifetime Veress never succeeded in publishing the complete version of the Venti pezzi per pianoforte, but issued various selections of the pieces, two of which remained totally unpublished. The present critical edition prepared by Giada Viviani reconstructs the complete text of the Venti pezzi per pianoforte on the basis of manuscript sources kept at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel: the musical scores, with fingering by Jakub Tchorzewski, are accompanied by an introductory essay on the context in which the collection was created, including a description of the state of the sources and a detailed apparatus criticus of the textual variants.

Con i suoi Venti pezzi per pianoforte (1938), il compositore ungherese Sándor Veress (1907-92) ha voluto creare una raccolta di miniature pianistiche su melodie popolari destinate sia a un uso concertistico, sia all’attivit didattica. In ogni branovengono rielaborati uno o più canti e danze provenienti da diverse aree geografiche di lingua ungherese, che si susseguono in base a una sapiente alternanza di carattere, scrittura musicale, difficolt esecutiva. Viene così offerta una variegatapanoramica della musica popolare di questa nazionalit : a canti di contenuto patetico o addirittura drammatico se ne affiancano di più leggeri e giocosi, avvicendandosi a danze di natura differente, tra cui spicca come un blocco omogeneo il gruppodelle Csárdás, tipica danza da locanda utilizzata anche da Liszt.I Venti pezzi per pianoforte rappresentano il coronamento della ricca attivit etnomusicologica condotta da Veress tra gli anni ’30 e ‘40, sia lavorando come assistente di László Lajtha e di Béla Bartók, sia svolgendo ricerca sul campo in Ungheria enei paesi limitrofi. Per il compositore, questa raccolta doveva svolgere un fondamentale ruolo di mediazione tra il folklore e la musica “colta” occidentale, in maniera da rivitalizzarne il linguaggio dall’interno, senza gli astrattismi dellesperimentazioni allora condotte in Europa.Nel corso della sua vita Veress non riuscì mai a pubblicare la versione integrale dei Venti pezzi per pianoforte, mentre ne fece uscire sul mercato alcune selezioni, lasciando del tutto inediti due brani. La presente edizione critica a cura di GiadaViviani ricostruisce il testo completo dei Venti pezzi per pianoforte in base alle fonti manoscritte conservate presso la Fondazione Paul Sacher di Basilea: gli spartiti musicali, corredati dalla diteggiatura di Jakub Tchorzewski, sono accompagnatida un saggio introduttivo sul contesto di creazione della raccolta, dalla descrizione dello stato delle fonti e da un dettagliato apparato critico delle varianti testuali.

Hector Berlioz was known for his innovative and creative musical gestures. He composed the opera Benvenuto Cellini in 1838, based on the fascinating life of a 16th century Italian goldsmith of the same name. Unfortunately the work as a whole never gained much popularity however its colourful and exciting overture has, on the other hand, become a firm favourite. Tohru Takahashi has created a stunning concert band arrangement of this well-known overture.

Hector Berlioz, der stets innovative Ideen meisterhaft in seinen Werken umzusetzen verstand, schrieb die Oper Benvenuto Cellini 1838 basierend auf dem faszinierenden Leben des gleichnamigen italienischen Goldschmieds aus dem 16. Jahrhundert. Großer Erfolg war dem Werk jedoch nie beschieden - mit Ausnahme der farbigen und lebhaften Ouvertüre, die Tohru Takahashi geschickt für Blasorchester umsetzte.

A causa della complessit della scrittura e di un libretto che proponeva vari generi fuori dalle usanze del tempo, l’opera conobbe un successo effi mero e finii nell’oblio. Grazie alla sua straordinaria vitalit , sopravvisse unicamente l’ouverture, che si rivela anche in questa brillante trascrizione per banda firmata Tohru Takahashi.

This version for fanfare band retains all the beauty and simplicity of the original.

Proiezione in origine dei valori e dei miti di una tragica militanza ideologica, la nozione di Umanesimo civile – l’idea di una epocale convergenza tra la mutazione culturale promossa dagli umanisti e i valori sociali e politici espressi dalle repubbliche cittadine del primo Rinascimento – si carica volentieri di una responsabilità di paradigma metastorico che la critica ha persuasivamente contestato. D’altra parte la nozione non sembra sostenere nemmeno la più ristretta accezione di un’esperienza culturale unitaria, di «una maniera propria dell’Umanesimo fiorentino, diversa da quella degli altri gruppi umanistici», troppo profonde risultando le differenze, su aspetti ideologici fondamentali, tra i letterati fiorentini così evocati. Tuttavia il concetto di Umanesimo civile rimane storiograficamente rilevante, confermando l’insistenza di Hans Baron sulla peculiarità dell’esperienza fiorentina, se si limita a riassumere la convergenza tra la rivoluzione culturale e l’elaborazione politica di una specifica vicenda cittadina, protagonista il ceto che in risposta alla rivolta dei Ciompi diede vita alla repubblica oligarchica, a sua volta infine esautorato dall’egemonia medicea. Un primo risultato di questa constatazione è una più incisiva inclusione del movimento artistico nella dimensione dell’Umanesimo civile, non in un ruolo collaterale e subalterno rispetto ai letterati, ma in quello di protagonista, di inoltrato avamposto di una nuova forma mentis, di una aurorale nuova coscienza filosofica e scientifica: un risultato che mette in discussione anche tradizionali convinzioni sulla radicale inettitudine dell’Umanesimo alla scienza. Secondo, cospicuo esito di una più puntuale definizione sociologica, la nozione proposta da Baron e dalla sua scuola non esaurisce con la caduta della repubblica oligarchica la sua pertinenza alle convinzioni e ai comportamenti del patriziato, il quale in effetti continuò largamente e a lungo a coltivare l’immagine di sé creata dall’Umanesimo civile, sebbene ormai non come orgogliosa affermazione del proprio potere, ma come difesa della propria identità sociale e di residue prerogative politiche. In realtà, assai più che non risulti ad una omogeneizzante «storiografia della decadenza», un inconciliabile conflitto di culture percorre il Rinascimento fiorentino in tutta la sua durata, investendo gli orientamenti filosofici, le concezioni artistiche e letterarie, intrecciandosi con le convulsioni politiche della città e con la tragedia della restaurazione confessionale. È appunto in tale intreccio che si possono cogliere, sino a fine Cinquecento, le ultime risonanze dell’Umanesimo civile.
È sembrato importante richiamare l’attenzione da questo punto di vista su personaggi, circostanze ed episodi storiograficamente noti per altri versi: sul magistero intellettuale di Piero Vettori, nella politica culturale del principato mediceo rimasto un corpo estraneo, una testimonianza di valori della tradizione fiorentina mortificati dall’assolutismo e dall’omologazione confessionale; su un aristotelismo umanistico e laico chiamato a fronteggiare il neoplatonismo di regime e a fecondare in termini ideologicamente non neutrali i dibattiti sulla Poetica e sulla teoria musicale; sull’Accademia degli Alterati, luogo di culto di memorie repubblicane e, in qualche momento, sospettabile punto di incontro del dissenso politico. È sembrato infine che la nozione di Umanesimo civile potesse plausibilmente e fecondamente raccordare l’invenzione del melodramma – L’Euridice di Peri, Rinuccini e Corsi per le nozze di Enrico IV e Maria de’ Medici – alle tradizioni culturali, agli interessi sociali, ai sentimenti e progetti politici coltivati dai suoi promotori, Florentini cives non rassegnati alla subalternità e all’alluvione antiumanistica.

The energetic activities of three craftsmen at a local crafts market inspired the composer Christian Bouthier to write this work in three movements. The clockmaker gets many curious visitors at his stand. He patiently and proudly shows the precision work of his beautiful clocks and lets all of them tick - the small ones and large ones. The cooper (barrel-maker) skillfully puts together fine-looking, sturdy barrels of the best types of wood. From afar, you can hear the cooper hammering. In the final movement things are hectic at the blacksmith because the local horse-riding society has just arrived. Many horses are provided with new shoes. The experienced blacksmith hits thehorseshoes into the proper shape on his anvil; now the horses can spiritedly trot and gallop on the way back. A fascinating new addition to the concert band repertoire.

De energieke werkzaamheden van drie ambachtslieden op een plaatselijke ambachtsmarkt inspireerden de Belgische componist Christian Bouthier tot het schrijven van The Craftsmen, een compositie in drie delen. De klokkenmaker,de kuiper (tonnenmaker) en de hoefsmid worden achtereenvolgens op ludieke wijze in de muziek weergegeven.
