Orchestra (Score) - Grade 4 SKU: HL.14027994 Composed by Poul Ruders. Music Sales America. Classical. Set. 86 pages. Edition Wilhelm Hansen #WH29830. Published by Edition Wilhelm Hansen (HL.14027994). ISBN 9788759864593. New York is the city which fascinates and inspires Ruders. Time and again he goes back there to work. 'Manhattan Abstraction' (1982) subtitles - a symphonic skyline for large orchestra - was conceived there. Ruders' Brittish colleague Oliver Knussen defines the piece as: - a performance of an extraordinary Morden-Times-like construction. It is a sort of symphonic sculpture, which in the composer's own words words propels forth from one particular inspiration: the New York profile, as seen from Liberty Island, one icy cold January day with it's open, clear sky and dazzling sun light. 'Manhatten Abstraction' appears as an amalgam of some of the compositorical habits found in present pieces. For instance, are present here compositorical ideas and melodic loans from 'Capriccio Pian'e Forte', 2nd String Quartet(1979), 'Four Compositions' (1980), and 2nd Piano Sonata(1982). The question at hand is mainly concerned with the enhanced elaboration of Ruders' use of the classic English change-ringing system: a permuting method pre-determining the order of tone-appearances and /or tone groups; a serial technique in other words. In spite of the rigidly fixed material, Ruders somehow manages to chisel out a personal expression by way of emphasising contrasting elements already existing within the material itself. The spiky, repetitive sections form a counterpart to a more human violin-solo. This dialectical tension is - as hinted by the title - a symphonic abstraction of a fascinating metropolis; the most beautiful and the ugliest. The subtitle: a symphonic skyline reflects the musical erection of the Manhattan profile, which under the clear sky, materializes into the most powerful and compelling man-made sculpture on earth. Thus 'Manhattan Abstraction' is a homage to, as well as a vision of, this giant contraption of concrete, glass, and chrome. $59.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

String quartet SKU: BO.B.3542 Composed by Domenec Gonzalez de la Rubia. Published by Editorial de Musica Boileau (BO.B.3542). Staeliana was commissioned by the Fundacio Caixa de Catalunya in 2007 for the inauguration of an exposition of the work of Nicolas Staël at La Pedrera, Barcelona. In this work I wanted to compose homage to a painter who knew how to join together in his unique works both the traditions of the past along with the vanguard of his time. Beginning with figurative works which lead toward abstraction, his body of work can be defined as a contrast between these two concepts which, with extreme simplicity, define his entire artistic conception. Staeliana, an expressive chorale, at times both luminous and dramatic, dissolves into the most minimal expression. From the first joining together of the voices it concludes with utter simplicity of expression. The suicide of the artist in 1955 is representative of the dissolution of his existence as well as of his artistic works. This contrast between figurative and abstraction is reflected in the music by the contrast between stability and tension. I believe that this duality may be found both in his work and in his life, always oscillating between living a creative life or opting for death, which may be seen as a fusion in nothingness with the plenitude of purest simplicity. $28.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Chamber Ensemble and Vocal Solo SKU: BT.EMBZ14709 Composed by Ferenc Farkas. Book Only. Composed 2010. 88 pages. Editio Musica Budapest #EMBZ14709. Published by Editio Musica Budapest (BT.EMBZ14709). German-French. The 'Lullaby' to celebrate the first birthday of my son András forms the first melody of the Fruit Basket. This cycle of children's poems is full of humour and delicacy of feeling, sometimes even reminiscent of a grotesque, which makes such poems equally delightful for adults. There thus arose twelve melodies to match this cycle of very short songs with the following characteristics: the curious march of 'Kaspar' (Punch) the fabulous world of the 'Magic Box' the tenderness of 'Sunbeams' the sound of bells in 'Morning in the Village', where a cock crows and a donkey brays the tranquillity of the forest where 'Violets' are hidden. Abstraction and humour are found in the 'StoneFrog' charm in the lyricism of the 'Lullaby' gentleness in the sound of the 'Sleigh Bells'. In a watery world there reigns the 'Frog King' while the 'Little Elf' dances with the angels and the 'Hanswurst' (Harlequin) Serenade rings out in jocular and sad vein. Together a whole row of wonderful appearances all find their epitome in the concluding 'Midday-Cloud'. This work was originally written in 1946/47 the version for solo singer and wind quintet was composed in 1980. Until now it has been available only for hire, it is being released on to the market now for the first time.

Der Humor und das Feingefühl in den Kindergedichten von Sándor Weöres, die zuweilen an Grotesken erinnern, sind auch für Erwachsene reizvoll und haben mich zu weiteren Liedern inspiriert. Piano SKU: BO.B.3688 Composed by Tania Parra. Published by Editorial de Musica Boileau (BO.B.3688). This book proposes a way to start the girls and boys from five yeras old to study the piano. Through the characters of the short stories, that head each piece on the form of a little poem, we work in a fun way, exploring the various possibilities of sound, timbre and register of the instrument. From the first contact, the piano is displayed with all its full expression.
At first, these scores have been designed to provide memory reference points on order to focus all the attention on what happens on the keyboard. Thus, the identification of groups and patterns of notes -often illustrated with cartoons and a short analysis of the formal structure, sometimes referred to in the opening poem- may be one of the first approaches the student has to the complexity of musical abstraction. Therefore, the use of the score is also an invitation to discover musical language intuitively.
The organization of material is also designed so that its contents can be played, in part or in full, in auditions and concerts. Students can recite the poems before playing the pieces and even perform dressed up. Thus, from the elegant leap of a dolphin to the small steps of a mouse, we imagine the rapid jump of a flea trapeze artist or the rhythmic sound of a train. From the sounds we hear in a haunted house, we will add a touch of the magic wand and learn to accurately enter pinches of ingredients for a potion…. $30.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 4 to 6 weeks

Piano SKU: BT.ESZ-01494800 Composed by Sandor Veress. Score Only. Edizioni Suvini Zerboni #ESZ 01494800. Published by Edizioni Suvini Zerboni (BT.ESZ-01494800). With his Venti pezzi per pianoforte (1938), the Hungarian composer Sándor Veress (1907-92) wanted to create a collection of piano miniatures on folk melodies destined for use in the concert hall as well as for teaching purposes. Each piece is based on one or more songs and dances from different Hungarian speaking areas, which are re-elaborated and presented in a carefully conceived alternation of character, musical writing and technical difficulty. The result is a multi-colored overview of Hungarian folk music: songs of a pathetic or even dramatic nature are contrasted with lighter and high-spirited pieces, interspersed with dances of varying types, among which a homogeneousblock stands out formed by the group of Csárdás, a typical tavern dance also used by Liszt. The Venti pezzi per pianoforte represent the culmination of the extensive ethnomusicological research made by Veress in the ’30s and ‘40s, while working as assistant to László Lajtha and to Béla Bartók, and at the same time carrying out field work in Hungary and neighboring countries. The composer intended that this collection should play a fundamental role of mediation between folklore and western “art†music, by revitalizing the language from within, without resorting to the abstractions of the experimentation being developed in Europe at the time. During his lifetime Veress never succeeded in publishing the complete version of the Venti pezzi per pianoforte, but issued various selections of the pieces, two of which remained totally unpublished. The present critical edition prepared by Giada Viviani reconstructs the complete text of the Venti pezzi per pianoforte on the basis of manuscript sources kept at the Paul Sacher Foundation in Basel: the musical scores, with fingering by Jakub Tchorzewski, are accompanied by an introductory essay on the context in which the collection was created, including a description of the state of the sources and a detailed apparatus criticus of the textual variants.
$31.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Ive long felt that the throbbing accompaniment was the ultimate expression of breath in music. Nothing else quite captures the same sense of wind instruments inhaling and exhaling as only winds can. It's a privilege to write a new work for my friend, the pipa master Ms. Wu Man to perform in the 05/06 concert season. Remembering the first time we worked together in 1991, Wu Man premiered my solo piece The Points on the age-old Chinese traditional instrument, with her adventurous virtuosity and sensibility in the piece with new musical concept and language, at the NewWorkOctober concert series at Columbia University in New York, presented by New Music Consort. I have been very happy to keep track with her new experiment and success in the new music field since then. Again, in 2001, I have composed a trio for her to play with Yo-Yo Ma and Young-Nam Kim, commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Minnesota for the Hun Qiao project. Wu Man loved the piece so much that she commissioned me another new work to perform this time. In Chinese cultural tradition, in which I am deeply rooted, music is a part of an organic art form, along with poetry, calligraphy and painting. I am glad that Wu Man suggested to create our new work together with visual artist Catherine Owens. We are going to combine the art forms together in one. I got my inspiration from three ancient poems, which are drawn in Chinese calligraphy, with exaggerated dancing lines and shapes in layers of ink. The music would go with image projection in Chinese painting according to the poems. Written for Wu Man and commissioned by the Walton Arts Center, Fayetteville, AR, the duet Ancient Dances is written for pipa and a set of percussion instruments (including a pair of naobo, finger cymbals, and bongos; a Japanese high woodblock, a triangle, 3 Beijing Opera gongs in small, medium and large sizes, a suspended cymbal and a conga). It consists of three movements of music - Cheering, Longing, and Wondering, in which the music abstractly represents various expressions, in different textures and tempi, inspired by the text in the three Chinese poems by Li Bai from Tang Dynasty: 1) Riding on My Skiff; 2) Night Thoughts; 3) The Cataract of Mount Lu. The flying lines, as like mysterious and vivid ancient dances, bring the music, the calligraphy, and the painting all together in our work. --Chen Yi. The flying lines, as like mysterious and vivid ancient dances, bring the music, the calligraphy, and the painting all together in our work.—Chen Yi. $37.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
| Csardas obstinee Cello, Piano EMB (Editio Musica Budapest)
Cello and Piano SKU: BT.EMBZ14779 Composed by Franz Liszt. Book Only. Com...(+)
Cello and Piano SKU: BT.EMBZ14779 Composed by Franz Liszt. Book Only. Composed 2011. 16 pages. Editio Musica Budapest #EMBZ14779. Published by Editio Musica Budapest (BT.EMBZ14779). The arranger of this work (a well-known Hungarian composer living in Romania) writes: This piece has always excited my imagination, from several points of view. First of all, its name. The German title, the obstinate one, may refer to its ostinato character. This is close to Liszt's programme concept, but the French word 'obstiné' is closer in meaning to stubborn. There is just a shade of difference, but to me it is important, because the latter suggests the description of a type of behaviour, the emotional state of a dancer's inner frame of mind abstracted into movements, expressed in dance movements, and this is a fascinating interpretation. The demonstration ofstubborn resistance and defiance to the point of exhaustion was not a frequently occurring phenomenon with Liszt. Secondly, at the beginning of the seventies Zoltán Kocsis played the piece in Transylvania. At that time, I asked the composer, Is the character of the continuous staccato in the left hand sharp, short, or an accompanying background like a constant shadow? Is it a weighty Brahmsian staccato, an ominous knocking? - and so on. Then there are the Bartókian false relations that keep recurring in the work, the B-E flat-G, etc. That foreshadows Debussy, creating harmonic thrills that, when I hear the work, keep my continuing interest alive for it. Finally, my immediate reason for arranging the work was of a family nature: in connection with Liszt's jubilee year, my daughter, who is a cellist, wanted a 'more energetic' piece to play at a bicentenary concert an addition to the existing slow, lyrical, or sombre works written by Liszt for the cello.
The arranger of this work, the well-known Romania-based Hungarian composer Cs ky Boldizsár writes: This piece has always excited my imagination, from several points of view. First of all, its name. The German title, the obstinateone, may refer to its ostinato character, this is close to Liszt's programme concept, but the French word 'obstiné' is closer in meaning to stubborn. There is just a shade of difference, but to me it is important, because the lattersuggests the description of a type of behaviour, the emotional state of a dancer's inner frame of mind abstracted into movements, expressed in dance movements, and this is a fascinating interpretation. The demonstration of stubbornresistance , defiance to the point of exhaustion, was not a frequently occurring phenomenon with Liszt. Secondly, at the beginning of the seventies Zoltán Kocsis played the piece here in Transylvania (Romania).
$18.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Organ - intermediate SKU: HL.49017043 18 Choral Settings for Organ. Composed by Enjott Schneider. This edition: Saddle stitching. Sheet music. Organ Collection. Classical. Composed 2007. 60 pages. Duration 36'. Schott Music #ED 20348. Published by Schott Music (HL.49017043). ISBN 9790001151290. UPC: 841886010529. 9.0x12.0x0.209 inches. This collection of eighteen choral arrangements of melodies from the Protestant hymnbook is meant to be used in services and little concerts. Rather varied with regard to the compositional approach of the individual arrangements, the collection, like a kind of informative selection, shows the different possibilities of how to deal delightfully with a tonal melody in post-modern pluralism. The stylistic patterns presented can be easily abstracted and transferred to other chorales for the purpose of improvisation. $29.95 - See more - Buy online

Piano - advanced SKU: HL.49044170 Piano Solo. Composed by Ulvi Cemal Erkin. This edition: Saddle stitching. Sheet music. Piano Solo. Classical, Contemporary. Softcover. Composed 1946. 26 pages. Duration 15'. Schott Music #ED 21700. Published by Schott Music (HL.49044170). ISBN 9790001194846. 9.0x12.0x0.123 inches. The Sonata is one of Erkin's works which the casual listener may fail to attribute to a particular geography at a first hearing. He will however become absorbed by a unique sense of identity, surprising harmonies and rhythms which integrate with such sincerity and authenticity in the flowof the music. At a more attentive hearing, one can discover features of ancient Anatolian music which Erkin always transforms with extraordinary inspiration, enfolding audiences unfamiliar with this culture in a music which is often profoundly spiritual with an admirably woven polyphonic texture in which not one bar seems superfluous or out of place. The first movement Allegro is woven from two contrasting themes. The first is a vigorous progression in the middle register with contrapuntal elements quasi as counterpoint. A luminous second theme evoking folk tunes connects back to the first theme and the movement ends in a brisk tone.In the second movement Adagio molto sostenuto a profound, introspective first theme is developed in variations of exquisite lyricism. The imposing middle section which forms a rondo suggests latent unrest.Imbued with energy and determination, the final Allegro consists of abstracted elements of Anatolian folk music bearing the creative stamp of Erkin. The movement ends with an impressive crescendo. $18.99 - See more - Buy online
