The Planets is cast as a single unit, consisting of seven movements, varying greatly in character, each of which describes a planet or a celestial body. The music for Sol is built out of the massive tutti-sound of the organ. The feeling is very much like the feeling of the sun shining down brightly onto you on a warm summer's day.

The Planets is cast as a single unit, consisting of seven movements, varying greatly in character, each of which describes a planet or a celestial body. Mars makes a war-like contrast with aggressive rhythms and contrasting registers. This part is poly-rhythmic and very complex. Thus there is extensive use of the proportions 5:2, 5:3, 5:4, 5:7 and 5:9 which are the point of departure of all the rhythm series.

Written in 1995 as one part of Lorentzen's 'Suite of Seven Pieces for organ', Mercurius is a symbol of merchants, trade and thiefs, traditionally depicted with wings on his heels, forever restless, scurrying about. The music is divided into sequences of four, resulting in a sense of weightlessness and hurried urgency. The first complete performance of 'The Planets' took place in 1996 and was given by Jens E. Christensen.

The Planets, op. 80 for mezzo-soprano, flute, viola and guitar, was composed in spring 1978 and given its first performance on 30 July the same year at the Lerchenborg Music Days. The occasion which led to the composition of the work was the 50th anniversary of the finding of a block book from the second half of the 15th century with texts on the planets. The inspiration came from Louise Lerche-Lerchenborg, who organised the Lerchenborg Music Days, and the work is dedicated to her. In connection with the concert at Lerchenborg, Poul Rovsing Olsen wrote the following about his opus: The Planets derives from the block book found in Lerchenborg's library in 1928. Seven fine, coloured drawings tell of the seven celestial bodies which in many European languages have given the weekdays their names. Each drawing is accompanied by a Latin text, under which there is a two-line dictum that briefly - though very concisely - gives an account of the characteristics of the children who belong to that particular celestial body. And these concentrated portrayals form the basis for the music. In the music I have attempted to give indications of my own experience of the particular power and nature characterizing each one of the heavenly bodies, just as I have allowed this cycle of planet songs to pass like a journey through the ethereal realms with motifs that appear, are repeated, are varied and disappear (but only so as to be replaced by new ones), until we finally return to the point of departure. The introduction - Aether - is purely instrumental. Two of the planets - Venus and Luna - are female; in the music written for them small (Indian) cymbals are used that are also present in Aether..

Comissioned by Roomful of Teeth, 7 Planets is an interplanetary exploration for 8 voices. Conceived in 2020 when observing the planets became a solace, providing a necessary stability for Alev Lenz, the seven movements are each based on one of the planetary frequencies. The work lasts around half an hour and requires some percussion at moments.

Composer’s Note:I composed The Planets to be performed during my tenure as Composer in Residence at Chetham’s International Piano Summer School, Manchester, in August 2018. Drawing inspiration from Holst’s Suite of the same name – a work of unstoppable importance – my composition nevertheless contrasts conspicuously, both in its overall scheme (nine movements instead of seven) and orientation (my work takes the Sun as its point of orientation, whereas Holst places the Earth at the centre point and hence leaves it out of the musical scheme). There is, as a consequence, a sense of increasing serenity to my music following the effervescence of Jupiter, though there are reverberations of earlier themes and moods in the concluding movement, Pluto, which nevertheless ends enigmatically as befits its distant, ‘cold’ designation. Pluto was left out of Holst’s work for good reason – it had yet to be discovered – though Colin Matthews redressed the situation admirably in 2000. Whether one chooses to go along with Pluto’s unresolved status, or indeed to promote it to the position of ‘full’ planet (amusingly, Pluto became demoted to dwarf- planet in 1992) is perhaps less important than its potential to evince a musical spirit entirely to itself.Performance Note:Movements may be performed separately as desired, though the connections between musical characters will of course be lost in doing so. In Neptune and Pluto (which are best performed attacca) I include infrequent use of a bell, pitched at B4. This denotes the intangibility of time; it adds a welcome new colour, as well as an additional element for the audience to ponder on. A standard hotel receptionist’s bell was used in the inaugural performance – surprisingly resonant, even in a sizeable auditorium – though if this is unavailable the cellist can play the same note (or harmonic, if preferred).World Premiere given at Stoller Hall, Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester, August 2018: Gillian Poznansky (flute), Sebastian Poznansky (cello) and Mark Tanner (piano).Duration: 30 minutesGrade 8(+)Former Spartan Press Cat. Stratoscape, by Swiss composer Gauthier Dupertuis, is a colorful and contrasting work for wind orchestra, depicting the view of our earth as seen from the stratosphere. This voyage into the sky is pictural, but also metaphorical, as it is also about distancing from our world. The work is divided into five sections: I Ignition!, II Broadness & The Big Blue, III Stars Shining from Down to Above, IV Destructive Forces, V One and Only Home Five contrasting movements, starting with Ignition in which Gauthier Dupertuis tries to musically convey the majesty of our planet seeing if from the atmosphere, ending with One and Only Hope, as the title say, a message of hope. In between three movements that depict the broadness of the landscapes of our planet (second movement), the fragility of our earth at night with only the stars shining (third movement). But also sheer reality in the fourth movement when the composer translates into music the damage caused toour planet by us human beings. Stratoscape: a fantastic view of Planet Earth!

The piece reflects the composer's fascination with the origins of the universe and deep space in general. The title comes from a theory, formulated by Pythagoras, that the cosmos was ruled by the same laws he had discovered that govern the ratios of note frequencies of the musical scale. (‘Harmonia’ in Ancient Greek, which means scale or tuning rather than harmony - Greek music was monophonic). He also believed that these ratios corresponded to the distances of the six known planets from the sun and that the planets each produced a musical note which combined to weave a continuous heavenly melody (which, unfortunately, we humans cannot hear). In this work, these six notesform the basis of the sections MUSIC OF THE SPHERES and HARMONIA. The pieces opens with a horn solo called t = 0, a name given by some scientists to the moment of the Big Bang when time and space were created, and this is followed by a depiction of the BIG BANG itself, as the entire universe bursts out from a single point. A slower section follows called THE LONELY PLANET which is a meditation on the incredible and unlikely set of circumstances which led to the creation of the Earth as a planet that can support life, and the constant search for other civilisations elsewhere in the universe. ASTEROIDS AND SHOOTING STARS depicts both the benign and dangerous objects that are flying through space and which constantly threaten our planet, and the piece ends with THE UNKNOWN, leaving in question whether our continually expanding exploration of the universe will eventually lead to enlightenment or destruction. Asteroids and Shooting Stars beschrijft objecten in de ruimte.

Joseph Compello depicts the planet Mars with The Red Planet, a heavy, brooding piece in 5/4. This piece provides cross-curricular opportunities to work with the school’s science department. Best of all, it will allow your group to show off the maturity of their playing. The Red Planet is an original concert piece in time for a string ensemble with at least one year’s training. The opening section should be played in a boldly aggressive style. To give the parts a less complex appearance, staccato quarter-notes are used in lieu of eighth-notes followed by eight-rests. This notation will enable young players to count with greater ease.Notes on the performance:Measure 7 introduces the main theme in the first violins.Measure 15 introduces a secondary theme which becomes increasingly important as thepiece progresses.Measure 24 introduces a third theme and its counter-melody. This section should be played in a lyrically flowing style, in contrast to the main theme from m. 9.Measure 35, marked fugato, will require particular attention to entrances. The playing style reverts to the boldness of the opening mood.Measure 55 is the recapitulation with an addition of a new chromatic line. This line, given to first violins, should be soaring and equal in volume to the main theme. Note that the secondary theme (originally played in m. 15) is played only after the repeat.Measure 66 should be played much more slowly and in a grandiose manner. Here, the main theme should be given much more weight than it received in the opening statement.Note that at m. 68 the secondary theme concludes the piece ponderously in thelow strings. The conductor may dictate each note at this point and disregard the meter. This arrangement has been recorded by Carl Fischer. The performance is available on line free of charge.Thank you for choosing this composition. I hope your students and audience will find it instructiveand enjoyable.Joseph CompelloGlen Arm, Maryland.

The Red Planet is an original concert piece in 5/4 time for a band with at least one year’s training. Joseph Compello's intriguing new work depicts the planet Mars in 5/4 time, giving the work an uneven, exciting feel. The opening section is bold and aggressive, and this piece explores a variety of moods throughout its duration. This, along with the lyrical pseudo sci-fi sound, will make The Red Planet a big hit with students. As a bonus, Compello included a fugato section to help introduce students to contrapuntal music.

The word castanet got its origins from castaina, the Spanish word for chestnut. Castanets are a percussion instrument with a long history in Roman, Latin American and Spanish cultures. They were popularized and most often used by Flamenco dancers; castanet performances usually included pairs of the shell-like instruments being played together. The rhythmic clacking sounds created by each pair and the dancer's movements along to the clicks and snaps made watching of these performances very delightful. IQ Plus Castanets are excellent instruments for use by children in the classroom to contribute to a musical situation, especially involving rhythm and dance. They will teach your child about creating the rhythmic foundations on which any type of music is formed. The castanet is often and most effectively played in pairs. This simple, yet sturdy instrument produces bright clapping sounds, a perfect instrument for your child's first experience and experiments in music.
