This work was commissioned for performance at the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, California. Though specifically designed for the Glatter-Götz / Rosales organ, it is appropriate for any large organ with at least three manuals and a generous combination action memory.

Visión escondida: During the quiet, ethereal introduction, the main theme is presented in short segments by the brass. The first main section reveals the theme intact in the solo organ. Successive thematic statements are embellished by the increasingly elaborate ornamentation. A development section leads to a series of increasingly dramatic fanfares. After a short organ cadenza, the Visión revelada presents the transformed main theme as an accompanied fugue. The dance-like secular nature is underscored by jazz-derived harmonies and insinuating contours, balanced by the scholarly contrapuntal devices.

In the 1980s and 1990s there was a new surge of interest in the old swing of the 30s and 40s. The epicentre of this swing revival lay in the American state of California, Los Angeles and San Francisco in particular. Based on therules of the old swing in which each beat has a ternary subdivision but with more contemporary sounds and harmonies, Peter Kleine Schaars composed this work San Fransisco Swing. Through the frequent use of the rhythmiccells 22, 23 and 24 in all parts of this composition, each band, irrespective of its experience with swing music, will be able to give a swinging performance!

In de jaren tachtig en negentig van de vorige eeuw ontstond er een nieuwe golf van belangstelling voor de oude swing van de jaren dertig en veertig. Het epicentrum van deze swingrevival lag in de Amerikaanse staat Californië, metname in Los Angeles en San Francisco. Gebaseerd op de wetten van de oude swing waarin elke beat een ternaire onderverdeling heeft maar met meer hedendaagse klanken en harmonieën, componeerde Peter Kleine Schaars deze SanFransisco Swing. Door middel van het veelvuldig gebruik van de ritmische cellen 22, 23 en 24 in alle stemmen van deze compositie zal elk orkest, ongeacht de ervaring met swingmuziek, in staat zijn een swingende performanceneer te zetten!

He initially found employment as an oboist in pit orchestras in New York City, later as an arranger of popular music for various ensembles, including those by William C. Handy, James P. Johnson and Paul Whiteman. His career as a composer was launched with a performance in 1931 of his Symphony No. 1 “Afro-American” by the Rochester Philharmonic, conducted by Howard Hanson, who would remain a life-long champion of Still’s orchestral works. By the 1950s the symphony had been performed in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and various European capitals.This notoriety earned Still a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1934, after which he moved to Los Angeles. He is credited as the first African-American to conduct a major orchestra (the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra), the first to have an opera performed by a major company (Troubled Island by the New York City Opera in 1949), and one of the first composers to write for radio, films and television. So numerous were his awards and accolades, including three Guggenheim Fellowships and a variety of honorary doctorates, that he was designated as the “Dean of Afro-American Composers.”The “Black belt” refers to a region in the southern United States that was distinguished by the color of its fertile soil. It was an area whose rich economy was based on cotton and tobacco plantations that were controlled by rich white people and worked by poor black laborers. Still’s piece From the Black Belt from 1926 is presumably a musical representation of these laborers. Son et lumière (“sound and light,” a kind of show staged for tourists at historic sites or famous buildings) is an orchestral entertainment whose subject is the play of colors, bright surfaces, and shimmery textures. I have tried in this music to recapture the élan and immediacy that regular meters and repetitive rhythms make possible—something forbidden during the modernist regime but recently restored in the post-modern work of composers like John Adams, Steve Reich, and others. Throughout its brief nine-minute span, then, the piece is built almost exclusively of short, busy ostinato figures—my attempt, I suppose, to achieve the rhythmic vitality of minimalism, but without giving in to the over-simple harmonic language that usually comes with it.Surprisingly, the musical materials seemed determined to shape themselves into an approximation of nineteenth-century sonata form. We hear an introduction, a first theme (based on triadic broken chords), a second theme (beginning with the flute solo), and a closing theme (led by two piccolos). In a sort of development section, these materials are recombined in new ways; in a recapitulation, both the first and second themes are recalled more or less intact (part of the second is actually repeated quite literally).Then, in the coda, a second surprise: as if another, different music has been lurking all the while behind the shiny surface, the strings now unexpectedly split off from the rest of the orchestra to assert a new, more passionate, more “serious” voice, transcending the external show of sound and light.Son et lumière, commissioned by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, was composed between June and December 1988 in Ithaca (N.Y.), in Los Angeles, and at the artists’ colony Yaddo, in Saratoga Springs (N.Y.).
