Sibelius made most of the orchestral versions of his songs for the soprano Ida Ekman (1875-1942), the incomparable Sibelius singer the composer called her in a dedication written in a score. Ida Ekman gave the first performance of the orchestral version of Soluppgang on March 30, 1914, in Turku. Idas husband Karl conducted the orchestra of the Turku Musical Society.Nearly all of the orchestral arrangements were made years after the original compositions for voice and piano. Yet even though the arrangements were made in a very short period of time, Sibelius handled the combination of solo voice and orchestra in all songs with equal mastery, sometimes creating dark and dramatic atmospheres (in Pa verandan vid havet), sometimes radiant, colorful impressions (in Soluppgang), or light-colored, transparent textures (in Varen flyktar hastigt), and always basing his ideas on the poetic idea of the song while discovering refined ways of supporting it.Nearly all of the orchestral arrangements were made years after the original compositions. String Quartet No.4 was written for the Camilli Quartet who gave the first performance at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, April 1995. It is dedicated to the memory of Nyman's composition teacher, Alan Bush. This quartet is a narrative made up of a chain of twelve complete but often cross-related movements, each quite simple in design. For instance, the Scottish melody first heard in the second half of I is hinted at in the 2nd violin/viola in the second fast section of II and is directly quoted again during III and XII. The theme of the fast section of IV is taken up again in VIII; IX reverts to the mood of the opening of I, while the rising scale/syncopated themes of II, IX and the bass of X and XII are related. X also reintroduces the slow harmonics theme from VII. XII is (apparently) cast in the form of a baroque French rondeau. The main theme of VI was plucked out of the Quartet and used in my score for Christopher Hampton's film Carrington. Duration 40 minutes. A set of parts is available for sale.

Als uitgangspunt voor de compositie La terre nam de componist Rob Goorhuis het fenomeen fanfare. De fanfare is een bijzonder klanklichaam: een orkest, samengesteld uit louter van ertsen gesmede instrumenten, die zeer uiteenlopendetimbres bezitten en samen een gaaf geheel vormen. In het werk La terre worden op een associatieve manier allerlei elementen in klanken vertaald. De grondstoffen voor de instrumenten zijn de bouwstoffen voor de compositie.Het eerste gedeelte schildert de natuur, moeder aarde, houvast, de grond, waaruit alles voortkomt. De grond staat voor traditie, rituelen, vruchtbaarheid. In de muziek vertaalt zich dit in grondtonige passages, ostinato, maarook de windvlagen van de inspiratie. De reflecties van menselijke emoties, verbonden aan de aarde, het leven op de aarde, zijn o.a.: blijdschap, verdriet, verwondering, berusting, hoop, wanhoop. De aarde is de vaste grond, waaropalles zich voltrekt. In het tweede deel wordt gespeeld met de stemmingen in een soort toccata. Hier klinkt de fanfare: soms verbrokkelt, dan weer als een massief geheel. De robuustheid van de klank is gegrond op de aarde,komt er uit voort. Er klinkt houvast en kracht in door, maar ook de liefde en nostalgie wordt ervaren in de zachte en broze klanken. La terre is het verhaal van de aarde, waaruit een fanfare oprijst in zijn veelzijdige schoonheid.
