In his poem Mending Wall, the inspiration for this piece, Robert Frost famously says “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall.†Mending Time, composed for Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones, explores the many meanings of walls in life, from barriers of safety, to murals upon which the art and history of people are transcribed. This 'musical wall of sound' is intended to invoke reflection and encourage mending to bring unity in times of joy, contemplation, and consolation.Robert Frost thought that poetry was, as he wrote, “a momentary stay against confusion.†In his poem Mending Wall, the inspiration for my piece, Frost famously says “Something there is that doesn’t love a wall.â€Confusion indeed! As the always tricky Frost well knew:A wall may be the strong barrier that protects our young or old from harm.A wall may be the mural upon which we inscribe the art and the history of our people.A wall may the sacred, embroidered fabric that keeps us from the cold.A wall may be the skin of our lovers and the dearest ones we treasure. And so, the barriers and walls between us may be, at last, paradoxically, the special place where we as neighbors meet together, if only to repair those walls and build them up again. But walls and barriers must also have a passage through them or what lies within and without them will surely starve and die.“Mending Time†is musical wall of sound, written to help our mending, to help bring us together in joy, contemplation, and consolation.Martin Bresnick.

Bresnick's multi-media work for three singers, an actor, instrumental ensemble, and shadow puppets tells a Russian folk tale about a dangerous incident along the railroad. It is in Russian, Yiddish, and English. Der Signal has been performed (and championed) by Le Train Bleu, and ensemble formed and conducted by Ransom Wilson.. Der Signal is, as Bresnick allows, low art, which was misconstrued by music critics, leading directly to Bresnick's later composition, High Art. Perhaps the use of shadow puppets should have been a clue. Duration: 15'.

This work for violin and piano by Martin Bresnick is a play on the words suite and bittersweet. Each of the four movements is based on a Yiddish folk song, which in English translate to On the Road, My Resting Place, Black Cat, and Dona, Dona. Each of the four pieces is primarily based on a Jewish folk song, but re-envisions them in a modern context, akin to Bartok and Kodaly. The composer noted, I found it a very challenging, yet touching way to remain in contact with some part of my own past that I don't usually reveal. The title references the difficult (bitter) and pleasant (sweet) aspects of experiencing the tumultuous history of a people through their folk music. This work for violin and piano by Martin Bresnick is a play on the words suite and bittersweet. I arranged Beethovenas Coriolan Overture for a small group of instruments, both to honor Beethovenas 250th birthday and to provide a template for the young composers invited to create a new composition as part of the Yale School of Music New Music Workshop in Norfolk, Connecticut. Beethovenas embodiment of tragic social conflict is a particularly timely and inspiring example for younger composers of how such turbulence and struggle might be revealed in music.I arranged Beethoven's Coriolan Overture for a small group of instruments, both to honor Beethoven's 250th birthday and to provide a template for the young composers invited to create a new composition as part of the Yale School of Music New Music Workshop in Norfolk, Connecticut. Martin Bresnick's Si del cammino e si della pietate (Of the Journey and of the Pity) for Large Carillon was commissioned by the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs for the 50th Anniversary of the Yale Memorial Carillon. The piece gets its name from Dante's Inferno, Canto II which reads: The day was departing, and the darkening air relieved the spirits of the earth from their labors; and I, myself, alone prepared to undergo the struggle of the journey and of the pity involved, that my memory, unerring, will retrace. Oh Muse, oh high genius, help now.

Commissioned on behalf of The Viney Grinberg Duo (Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg) by the University of Queensland School of Music and the Creative Collaboratorium, Handwork was premiered at UQ in August 2015, shortly before its U.S. premiere at Yale School of Music the following month by the Duo (both of whom are YSM alumni). Bresnick points to the multi-faceted aspect of Handwork, including a dreamy fantasia, a nocturne, a folk-song, a Latin-American dance with much prominent counterpoint and poly-metric intrigue..Handwork is many things - a dreamy fantasia, a nocturne, a folk-song, a Latin-American dance with much prominent counterpoint and poly-metric intrigue. Handwork is sometimes tonal with crunchy Prokofiev-like dissonances. There are obvious Bartókian octatonic passages in the development, followed by a Persian free-rhythm Santur variation. A dream-like fragment of a Beethoven minuet briefly appears. The work concludes with a re-statement of the opening subject in it's simple, enigmatic ambiguity.

Bresnick's fascinating quartet, Every Thing Must Go, was written for and championed by the Prism Saxophone Quartet, and the Oasis Quartet has provided a YouTube performance of two movements. Broschinsky, an excellent young trombonist and founding member of the Guidonian Hand Trombone Quartet, has now arranged Bresnick's quartet for four trombones.

We present a newly engraved edition of this important Bresnick work, with edits from composer. Aesthetically, he sees his peice for eight celli, B's Garlands (written in 1973 under the influence of Ligeti) as a breakthrough stylistically, and he counts it as a turning point in his artistic self-awareness. And this is true, if you know some of Martin's music from more recent years, which can be stylistically quite divergent, it's not so hard to hear in the beautiful choir of celli a range of ideas that will contribute to the mature Bresnick sound. Falling is a song cycle based on two poems by Kathryn Stripling Byers (Snowbird and Lost Soul) and excerpts from David Bottoms’ longer three-part poem, In a U-Haul North of Damascus. The poems have been arranged in a sequence that forms a four-part narrative of conflict, separation and the possibility of consolation and renewal. Full of restless energy and bursts of passionate lyricism, Falling is a challenging work for a mature singer. The vocal range calls for a singer who can rise to the high B above that treble staff and descend to the F sharp below the piano part. This piece is transcribed from the orchestral original by the composer and Arthur Bloom, edited by Lisa Moore, and is challenging but idiomatic. The score and parts for the orchestral version are available from the publisher’s rental department.

A Meet The Composer commission led to Bresnick's 8-movement evocation for pianist Lisa Moore and the So Percussion. From the San Francisco Chronicle: Martin Bresnick's fierce instrumental cycle for piano and percussion ensemble takes its inspiration from Goya's etchings of the ravages of war - not only in its movement titles and subject matter but also in its dexterous combination of folk strains and dark, almost expressionist howls of outrage. For more information, watch the composer discussing the creative process on YouTube, or watch a presentation of the work here.

Martin Bresnick's Parisot for Twelve Cellos offers a musical portrait of his admired colleague Aldo Parisot. Divided into three movements to be performed without pause, Paradox, Parallels, and Paragon, each represent attributes of the great cellist and teacher and reflect on Bresnick and Parisot's shared musical path. This unique orchestration is a bold addition to the instrument's repertoire. My work for the Yale Cellos Parisot is, perhaps, a musical portrait or temporalrevelation of my dear friend and admired colleague Aldo Parisot. The work is in threemovements (the second and third played without pause), each named for attributesof the great cellist and teacher or, as in the second, our shared musical path.
