Opening with a heroic fanfare, this stunning original composition was inspired by the 15th century Inca citadel Machu Picchu and specifically the Intihuatana stone in what is now southeastern Peru where sun worship was favored. Many historians have come to refer to the Inca Empire as Children of the Sun. The work continues with an intense, almost frenzied, component that sets the stage for an active interplay of contrasting themes featuring a melodic statement interrupted by accented percussive statements. A pensive and lush moment builds with strong percussion contribution to a bold and satisfying conclusion. (4:45).

Jacob de Haan begins his arrangement of the well-known hymn Allein Gott in der Höh’ sei Ehr (All Glory Be to God on High) with a quotation from his own Missa Katharina, a mass for choir, soprano, and band. To this melody he sets the Latin text from the last part of the Gloria. The chorale is then heard after an interlude and can, at the director’s discretion, be accompanied by the choir singing in either German or English. A perfect work for church concerts. The call to spread the good news of the Gospel echoes through the centuries directly from the Savior. Jesus had a unique worldview because He was the first born over all creation; everything was created by Him and for Him. He chose the time and place of His appearing on Earth. He became the physical manifestation of God's love. His example and teaching changed the course of history - His sacrifice and Resurrection changed the course of eternity. The earthly ministry of the Master was coming to an end - the ministry of sharing His message was just beginning. However, He promised to be with us - even to the end of the age. This work is a celebration of the call to serve - a challenge to see the responsibility of missions in a new Light - and a charge to surround those that surrender their lives to the task of the Great Commission to go INTO ALL THE WORLD. Because of the saints that have come before - because of the sacrifice of those who continue to support missions around the world - because of those who still answer the call - and because of being blessed and empowered by the Holy Spirit, the name of Jesus is lifted across the globe - AND THE SUN NEVER SETS ON THE PRAISES OF THE LORD!

The sky creates a dazzling display of yellows, oranges, and reds, before turning a calm blue, then purple, and finally black. Such sunsets inspired Jan de Haan to write this piece for solo flugelhorn and brass band. It is dedicated to his daughter, Hermanda. Zonsondergang.

The introduction sets the tone for this fun to sing anthem. While children will enjoy singing this anthem, they'll also learn that God is faithful and God's love is eternal. Comfortably set within the vocal range of children, the syncopations and melodic interest will have them asking to sing this song every time you meet. Easily sung in unison, the optional second part adds a little pizazz to the ending of the anthem. This will require an intermediate to advanced pianist to comfortably play the full accompaniment. Consider asking a bass player to play the moving quarter notes in the left hand piano score (that will help less accomplished pianists focus on playing the treble clef only). Ask a high school snare drum player to add a soft-brush swing style, as a fun addition to the anthem. Be careful of the balance between the keyboard, bass, snare, and singers.Performance options include adding simple movements as are appropriate for your space and setting. If you are performing this in a concert setting, consider adding easy soft-shoe style dance steps. This would be a great concert ender for a nursing home visit by your choir. Churches with projection capabilities may want to show slides of children in hands-on ministries from within your church or community as part of the performance of the anthem.Appropriate days: General praise, themes of discipleship, Christian personhood, God's love, God's presence.

Kitty Alone is the latest in series of captivating picture books, each based on a beloved songtale from the great American folk music heritage, and collected by John M. Feierabend. This beautifully illustrated version of Kitty Alone was conceived by illustrator Mina Echevarria, who suggested setting the song in the Appalachian Mountains and using a bobcat as the title character. Since they are rarely seen in the daytime, Appalachian locals refer to the bobcat as the “woods ghost.†Here the illustrations create the ghostly bobcat in the evening darkness of the forest encountering several delightful friends. Also notice the red thread that appears throughout.  Find it in the last picture…was it all just a dream? Like the other picture books in John M. Feierabend’s First Steps in Music series, Kitty Alone includes a description of the history of the song, the notation of the song, and a link to download the song sung by Jill Trinka at no cost. Depicting the awe-inspiring moments after a thunderstorm, this concert overture is an exciting and dramatic work that portrays streaks of sunlight jetting toward the horizon. A lyrical opening sets the tone as the clouds begin to break, and then the music takes off in a frenzy of excitement as the sunlight breaks through. Incredible harmonies intertwine with dynamic fanfares and woodwind flourishes as the work continues to develop. A lyrical section provides a brief respite to the active rhythmic pulse before the music takes off again, building to one last heroic statement of the main theme. Inspirational!

Like many Englishmen I had sung madrigals for pleasure - usually late at night with friends, after several glasses of wine. While these madrigals have their charm, and many are extremely beautiful, I found, as I began an extended exploration of the madrigal as a creative venture, that the richest source lies in the Italian Renaissance. In 1998 I embarked on a project to write a series of madrigals, eventually deciding to collect them in 'books' in the manner of Italian madrigalists, such as Monteverdi or Gesualdo. The Second Book is for an unusual six-part group - the Scandinavian Trio Mediaeval (3 sopranos) and three tenors (John Potter plus two from the Hilliard Ensemble) - and sets Petrarch in the original 14th century Italian. I focused on those sonnets known as the Rima Sparsi (scattered verses) and added one extra Petrarch setting - originally a radiophonic piece (Marconi's Madrigal) for CBC's Marconi Day. Gavin Bryars.

Peter Pindar Stearns has shown a gift for melody in his numerous sacred works. In this latest anthem, Stearns sets the text in such a way that the melody comforts and envelops the listener in God's steadfast love. The men have the melody at the opening, while the women have a brief solo moments later in the piece. The vocal writing compels the choir to sing with nuance and sensitivity and the organ part is beautifully written as well. While this anthem could be sung in any season, its color and mood are especially appropriate for the season of Advent.

In his op. 112 Beethoven sets the two poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Meeresstille (Calm Sea) and Gluckliche Fahrt (Prosperous Voyage). Several sketches reveal that Beethoven had already begun to take an interest in the poems by the end of 1814. The composer conducted the premiere at a benefit concert for the Viennese Citizens' Hospital Fund in 1815. As the publication of this work was long in coming, the dedicatee Goethe received a copy of the score only in May 1822. A few months later Beethoven inquired of him: [...] how lovely would it be to know, if I appropriately united my harmonies with yours. Also enlightenment on what is to be seen as truth, would be dearly appreciated, as I love the latter above all, and never shall be said: Veritas odium parit. The old but commendable Breitkopf material has now been definitively replaced by the new edition based on the Complete Beethoven-Edition, save for the tried and true piano reduction by Carl Reinecke, which boasts more than simply historical merits. Its existence is assured by the revised and simplified form in which it appears in the new piano reduction. It will no doubt long continue being a much appreciated aid at choral rehearsals. In the piano vocal score the articulation and dynamics were adapted to the music text of the Complete Edition. The sun recently began shining from a cloudless sky on Beethoven's Meeres Stille und Gluckliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) after the publication of the piano reduction and choral score which signalize the completion of the performance material based on the new Beethoven Complete Edition. Please check the respective concertos to find the orchestral parts. World premiere version with two sets: Oct. 21 2011 NULL.

Written during the winter of 2007, this work is a metaphor of the three stages of a short but intense love story. The first movement is called Poniente. This is the name of a rainy wind that comes from west. In this sense, west is not only the place where the sun sets, but where night begins. The first movement represents the beginning, the happiness and freshness of something new. The violin evokes freshness and spontaneity over the constant rhythm of the guitar, which plays the higher voice. While the violin signs happily, the guitar, instead of being just its accompaniment, plays the role of a counterpoint with its rhythmical and constant theme. The second movement is called Largo-Balada-Largo and it's divided in two different parts. In the first one, guitar plays alone, reflexive and slow, representing the moments of loneliness of the one that waits for the lovers reunion. In the second movement, violin and guitar begin a dialogue where the violin plays a sweet yearning ballad, while the guitar answers as a baroque counterpoint. At the end, calm comes back, as in the first part of the second movement. The third movement is called Danza ritual and it is the most violent of the three parts. It represents the lovers reunion, the resolution of all the controlled excitement. It's the flame that consumes quickly but intensely. At the end of this part, the violin reintroduces the main theme of the first movement, but with a variation, more intense and dramatic. This dramatic and intense quality is also due to the guitar ostinato, which ends in a hysteric trill. This leads us again to the first part, ending the third movement and this work in a sudden setback, as an interrogation tag.
