Wer sagt, die ,,ernste Musik musse tatsachlich immer nur ernst sein, den straft Haydn Lugen. Dabei hatte er selbst oft nichts zu lachen. Seine Ehe mit Anna Maria war namlich alles andere als glucklich. In einem Brief beschrieb er seine Frau als ,,infernalische Bestie (Bestia infernale), die ihm so viel wirres Zeug geschrieben hatte, dass er angedroht habe, gar nicht mehr nach Hause zu kommen. Das habe sie endlich zur Rason gebracht ... Spannend ist naturlich der Umstand, dass dieser Brief an Luigia Polzelli ging, Haydns um 18 Jahre jungere, langjahrige Geliebte. Ob Frau Haydn tatsachlich so furchtbar war, welche Rolle die feurige italienische Geliebte dabei spielte und ob Haydn gar so arm war, werden wir wohl nicht mehr in Erfahrung bringen. Dafur ubersetze ich diese ungluckliche Dreiecksbeziehung auf Violine, Cello und Klavier, die sich auf chromatisch-wackligem Boden bewegen. Wird es einen Betrug geben? Wer betrugt dann eventuell wen? Und wer wird betrogen? Oder gibt es gar mehrere mogliche Konstellationen? Das entscheiden Sie selbst. Jedenfalls wird es nicht ohne Hysterie, Schluchzen, Erleichterung und fliegende Fetzen der (in diesem Falle) drei ,,Bestie infernali ablaufen. Denn die Liebe ist ja bekanntlich ein seltsames Spiel ... (Manuela Kerer, 2016).

The twelve “London Symphonies†comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn's symphonic oeuvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon, and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Hailing from 1791, the Symphony in D major no. 96 numbers among the first symphonies written in and for London. The epithet given to it by posterity, “The Miracleâ€, was bestowed erroneously, for the miracle - that no one was injured when a chandelier fell during a concert - took place during a performance of a different Haydn symphony. And yet it is a miracle of musical esprit nonetheless; from the subtle relations between the motives consisting of broken triads that open all four movements, to the virtuosic shifts in mood owing to surprising harmonies, Haydn here submits a prime example of how he develops musical ideas. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition, thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

In these amplifications of three of Haydn's best known string quartets, Op. 71, Wranitzky expanded the ensemble to nine players by adding flute, oboe, two horns and double bass, making it one of the larger divertimento scorings for the period. First published in 1800, but overlooked by performers ever since, they are now issued here as a 3 volume set in full score with set of parts. The first of the group received its modern premiere on 1 March 2008 in New York's Carnegie Hall.
