Monumentum, Music for String Sextet, was written in 2014 to a commission from the Moritzburg Festival, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center New York and the Kathe Kollwitz House in Moritzburg. It is dedicated to the cellist Jan Vogler. The world premiere took place on 19 August 2014 at the Moritzburg Festival, performed by Timothy Chooi & Mira Wang (violins), Roberto Diaz & Hartmut Rohde (violas), Jan Vogler & Harriet Krijgh (cellos). The American premiere took place on 7 May 2015 in the Lincoln Center with the Amphion String Quartet, the violist Yura Lee and the cellist Jan Vogler. The String Sextet Momentum commemorates the outbreak of the First World War, the death of Peter Kollwitz – who died as a volunteer, aged just 18, in the early weeks of the war – and the manner in which his mother, the artist Kathe Kollwitz, mourned the loss of her son. The artist worked through her pain by creating her most famous sculpture, The Mourning Parents. It stands today at the German soldiers’ cemetery at Vladslo in western Flanders, where her son Peter also lies buried. During the 18 years that she worked on the Parents, Kathe Kollwitz attended several concerts at the Volksbuhne in Berlin, where from January to February 1927 she heard Arthur Schnabel’s cycle of all the Beethoven piano sonatas. Schnabel performed the Sonata op. 111 in c minor on 26 February 1927, and this work touched her in particular, as we can read in her diary: “The strange flickering notes turned into flames – a moment of rapture, taking one into a different sphere, and the heavens opened almost as in the Ninth (Symphony). Then one found one’s way back – but it was a return after having been assured that there is a heaven. These notes are serene – confident – and good. Thank you, Schnabel!” This encounter with Beethoven’s last sonata inspired the artist to take up work again on her sculpture after a long interruption and to consider different possibilities for arranging the two figures. For this reason, the first minutes ofMomentum are derived from this sonata by Beethoven – though without it being quoted in an audible manner – and they leave their mark on the form of the Sextet. The number 18 and the date of Peter Kollwitz’s death (23 October 1914) also have a direct impact on the work’s dramaturgy. This music is mostly calm in nature, but is time and again interrupted unexpectedly, being disturbed by unruly sounds and vehement eruptions until time itself seems to dissolve in an aleatoric passage. The work ends with an extended lament on “seed corn should not be ground”, a line from Goethe’s Wilhelm Meister’s Journeyman Years. Kathe Kollwitz often quoted this phrase to argue for peace, and also took it as the title for a lithograph that she made in 1942. - David Philip Hefti

On September 19th, 1991, a mummified corps of a man was found at the Similaun glacier in the Otztaler Alps. The glacier unveiled an early man after 5300 years, with all his personal belongings. His clothes and weapons were fairly well preserved and allow us today a deeper insight into that period. Austrian nature filmmaker Kurt Mu ndel reconstructed the life of this man and made a film, which, based on facts, shows how it might have been then. Otto M. Schwarz used this documentary as an opportunity to write a work for symphonic wind band and musically resurrect the Man in the Ice..

About the Commission:Cove was commissioned by and dedicated to the band students at Lake Middle School, Woodbury, Minnesota, Douglas Bradley, Director.About the Performance:Cove is an exciting young band piece. It features interesting rhythms and percussion writing. For rehearsal purposes, I suggest scheduling a few sectionals with the percussion section. This will help them understand their role as they play with the band. It is of utmost importance that the dynamics are observed and that proper balance between sections and the band be observed. Try to balance the percussion so that the mallet part is heard over the non-mallet parts. The rhythmic vitality is the most important element in creating an exciting performance. The Andante section (m. 29) can be played in an expressive and rubato manner.IMPORTANT NOTE: The trombone part has been written with a divisi. One should play the top line if a euphonium and/or tuba is present in the ensemble to keep from having chord inversions throughout the piece. Be sure to balance the divisi part in the trombone section and throughout the piece so that there is an equal number of players on each part.

Giuseppe Torelli was born in Verona, Italy in 1658. He was a famous violinist, teacher, and composer. His career allowed travels to Germany and Vienna, but centered in Bologna, Italy, where he was a violinist and violist in the Accademia Filarmonica and later, worked as a musician at the Basilica San Petronio. Torelli was an especially important figure in the development of the instrumental concerto, with particular emphasis on both the solo concerto and concerto grosso forms. The Sinfonia in D Major (G21) is a piece originally scored for one or two trumpets, first and second solo violins, first and second ripieno violins, solo viola, ripieno viola, violoncello ripieno, violoncello continuo, violone ripieno, and organo. The exact date of the composition is not known, but the work is presumed to have been completed in the latter period. This edition is based on the autograph manuscript located in the musical archives at the Basilica San Petronio in Bologna, Italy.

English Organist and composer Henry Smart was one of a family of accomplished musicians active in the 19th century. During his lifetime, Smart was widely considered to be one of the premiere composers in British history, but that popularity was not sustained in the years since his death. He is best known now for the hymn tune Regent Square which is sung to Angels From the Realms of Glory. This Organ Postlude In C reveals Smart to have been an accomplished composer with an excellent understanding of his instrument and undoubtedly of the musical tastes of his era.

A magnificent contest overture combining sensitive scoring with memorable melodies. The opening fanfare and processional leads to an andante section featuring lyrical solo passages that are not technically demanding. A variation of the opening theme brings the band to a powerful and triumphant conclusion.

The Richard Wagner Complete Edition presents the composer's entire output for the first time in a reliable form. The conductor Michael Balling, in the early years of the 20th century, attempted to make Wagner's work more accessible for research and performance, but the edition only reached 10 volumes - some with grave shortcomings - and was discontinued after Balling's death in 1925. A further attempt at a complete edition by Otto Strobel was abandoned at the preliminary stages. This third attempt at a complete edition will be the first scholarly, critical edition, based on an evaluation of all the accessible source materials and the latest findings of serious Wagner research. As the edition is also intended for practical performance, the musical text has been kept free of philological insertions; these are listed in the appendices of each volume in the Critical Commentary. Numerous, partly unpublished works - some relatively unknown - and variant versions are published here for the first time. The edition presents authentic texts for Wagner specialists and researchers and critically based performing materials. Contrary to widely held opinions, even the well-known works of Wagner are not necessarily available in reliable editions. The genesis, history and performances directed by Wagner himself are extensively documented so as to present as complete an image as possible of Wagner's compositional intentions.

Though some themes of the D major Violin Concerto appear fragmentarily among Beethoven's earlier drafts, the score received its final shape - according to the autograph manuscript - in 1806 only. The first performance took place on December 23 of the same year in Vienna, the violon solo was played by Franz Clement. The concerto met with a rather cold reception: this critic of the Wiener Theaterzeitung admitted 'some beauty' in it but for the rest he found that '...the coherence often seems totally broken and the endless repetitions of some commonplace sections can easily become tedious.' The performance may have not been totally satisfying, it is certainly surprising that the setof parts published in 1808 is dedicated to Stephan von Breuning instead of Clement. It is not impossible that Beethoven lost faith in the value and future of his work, too, - his later attempt to change it into a piano concerto can be interpreted in this way.

What kind of music would Mozart write if he were alive today and had been exposed to jazz, rock 'n' roll, and polytonality? This piece supposes that he would start with what he knew and then figure it out on the fly! Mozart's Sandbox is a piece rich with depth and humor, but thoughtfully scored for young bands.
