A transcription for brass quintet of the Paul Manz organ setting on the tune Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier, the melody is beautifully ornamented and almost takes on a new life of its own. The french horn is assigned the cantus firmus for the most part. The piece is perfectly suited for this instrumentation, which provides a flexible, fluid quality to the hymn tune.

The disciple John penned these words: This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins (I Jn 4:9-10). With this incomparable love as its central theme, Wondrous Love recounts the earthly life and ministry of Jesus, which ultimately led Him down a path of sacrifice and death on the cross. This blending of original and familiar melodies along with poignant and scripture-based narration provides a compelling rendition of the events leading to the cross. Flexibly conceived for Lent and/or Holy Week, each individual anthem may be presented during the weeks leading up to Easter, or Wondrous Love may be performed as a whole with or without the resurrection finale. Small and large choirs will equally appreciate Lloyd Larson’s beautiful choral writing, and accompaniments ranging from piano only or full orchestra to professionally recorded CDs offer numerous options for your unique programming needs.

The first performance of this cantata, which belongs to Bach's third annual cycle of cantatas, took place on the 2nd day of Christmas in 1725. With the exception of the closing chorale, with a text from 1711 by Georg Christian Lehms, the text of the cantata refers to St. Stephan, the first martyr of the New Testament and patron saint whose name day occurs on 26 December. In a dialog between the Soul (Soprano) and Jesus (bass) the struggle with sin is recounted respectively in two expressive arias arias. The entire orchestra is involved in the first movement as well as in in the closing chorale together with the choir. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3105700.
