Also available for trumpet and piano (HL44005496) Manhattan was commissioned by the United States Army Band for their trumpet soloist Woodrow English, and first performed by them in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November 2003. Wanting to write a piece that demonstrated both the lyrical and technical abilities of this outstanding player, the composer decided on a two-movement work showcasing these qualities, and with the intention that the movements could be played individually when a shorter solo is required. The theme is a weekend in New York, and the opening bluesy movement (Saturday Serenade) describes the city on a Saturday night, perhaps in a smoke-filled jazz bar. While writing Sunday Scherzo, the composer pictured an early morning jog in Central Park. This vivaciously rhythmic movement ends with an even quicker coda which brings the work to a brilliant close.

The Shadow Knows for Six Tubas and Drums (optional) was composed by Jim Self in 2010 as a class recording project at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music. The entire class of tubists played F Tubas. The Shadow Knows is written for six tubas panned across a 180-degree spectrum. Performances should have the tubas spread evenly with the drums in the rear center. The spatial quality of the music is important to the texture. The drums are optional and substitute percussion instruments can be used so one drum set player can do all. The piece begins with an octave G's vamp that leads into a scherzo like melody. Lots of cascading and special effects emphasize the spectral nature of the music. Rhythmic hemiolas give the feeling of constant meter changes between and 6/8. The second section is a pretty waltz over jazzy harmonies punctuated by various tuba solos and move rhythmic permutations. This is followed by three short duets and a return to the initial groove and theme culminating in a fast coda-like section. The initial vamp returns with a big rallentando and octave changes--and the piece ends with a quasi-improvised solo in the 1st tuba over a bluesy chord. The Shadow Knows was premiered and recorded in April 2010 at USC. Tubas: (R-L in Mix) Steven Caron, Lyndsey Hoh McClure, Zeewoong Munn, Kyle Mylonakis, Blake Cooper, Danny Garcia; Drums: Brian Foreman. DMA student Dave Holben conducted. It was recorded and mixed by USC Professor Rick Schmunk, The recording can be heard at www.jimself.com and copies can be purchaced there also. The Shadow Knows was completed on February 2 so the title refers to the Ground Hog seeing his shadow in Punxsutawney, PA. It also remembers the old radio mystery show--The Shadow.

Alex Freeman found initial inspiration for his string quartet (2015) in a series of photographs a geologist friend showed him of en échelon veins in rock formations. The open strings punctuated with pizzicato unisons that begin the single-movement work call to mind something crystalline and shimmering, which is immediately infused with tumbling lyrical lines in something of a rapid caccia technique throughout. The middle of the work becomes more suspended in slower material loosely based on a technique of prolation canon, comprises layers of free, expressive, lyrical, and even elegiac music moving at different speeds. As the work concludes, the materials converge in a rhythmically pulsating stasis and an almost chorale-like statement. Duration: c. 13' This product includes the score and the parts (A4 sized). American-Finnish composer Alex Freeman (b.1972) has established himself among the foremost composers of choral music in Finland. A dedicated citizen of his musical community, a teacher, and a choral singer himself, he composes music that reflects an appreciation for a wide range of aesthetics and a passion for communicating with listeners and performers. In his choral works, in particular, we find music that aims to be sonorous, melodic, and resonant, but is always crafted to carefully avoid the cliches that can burden conventional tonality. His instrumental works run the gamut: a cantata with orchestra based on poetry of Whitman; a significant body of solo piano works that reveal deep roots in everything from austere absolute music to soaring elegaic rhetoric (see Albany Records, Inner Voice); his chamber work Blueshift (Navona Records), which is a kind of paean to Reich and Adams in miniature; open-ended modular works, like various iterations of his Slow All Clocks for electronic media, solo clarinet, and mixed choirs of kanteles; and, recently, some new directions in microtonal music.
