Béla Bartók planned in 1939 to arrange for two violins and three violins his choral works (for egual voices). He was prevented from doing this by his early death. At the request of the Editio Musica Budapest, Endre Szervánszky has undertaken this task in 1971. His arrangements, which we are bringing out in two volumes, offer valuable material both to violin teaching and group music-making. Aulos to a certain degree continues Orbán's easy piano pieces for children, which he composed for Ãgnes Lakos's piano tutor and which Editio Musica Budapest published in a separate volume entitled Enchanted Forest in 2011 (Z. 14742). Yet on this occasion the composer took on something which was both significantly different and more than his earlier pieces for children. On the one hand, he did not compose for beginners but for more advanced students who have studied piano for at least three years. On the other, he did not set developing the technique of piano playing as an aim, rather a systematic presentation of different polyphonic genres and compositional procedures(imitation, fugue, stretto, inversion, augmentation and diminution, double counterpoint, latent polyphony, double and triple fugue, cantus firmus technique, etc.). Orbán introduces his students to the mysteries of polyphony in a direct and practical manner, and thus actually makes them familiar with the art of composition. The educational use of the series is significantly increased by the fact that before each piece the composer presents and clarifies with demonstrative illustrations the polyphonic procedure he introduces. Orbán's explanations are not text-book-like at all, but are deliberately personal and subjective, full of lessons and individual associations taken from his practice as a composer. They were written in the same spirit as the works themselves - while they perfectly fulfil their educational purpose they are equally individual, witty and inspired pieces of music that are a joy to play. The composer writes about his work: My piece entitled Embroidery patterns on the cracked surface of the Earth can be imagined somehow as follows: two clarinets and a bassoon write beautifully ornamented magic formulas in the clay. As they proceed, the surface cracks into pieces. They almost finish the writing , but an invisible hand keeps rearranging the innumerable component elements. The rearrangement creates time hiatuses, or heaps together units of information in masses of unexpected density (in the second part, brief but condensed suddenly-emerging patterns of differing density scratch the surface of the long periods of silence) elsewhere it collides with the netof sound that carries the material and thus huge faults, ruptured tectonic plates, come into being The complete work was first performed by the Trio Lignum (Csaba Klenyán, Lajos Rozmán, György Lakatos) in Budapest in 2005.

Both volumes of Easier Together - Recorders contain short and easy duos that can be performed by beginners either with their teachers or with more advanced learners. The pieces progress gradually from easier ones to more difficult works. This collection of recorder duos can also, with some supplementary material, be used as a recorder method. In these volumes, the musical experience of two-part playing is further enriched by the use of different recorder types: where indicated, the lower part can be played not only on soprano recorder but also on alto, tenor, or even sopranino recorder. Some pieces include harmonic indications, so an accompaniment can be improvised alongside the two recorder parts. The process of learning and practicing is additionally supported by a fingering chart and articulation marks for tonguing, with new musical elements highlighted in the score. Trombone and recorder teacher Péter Perényi (b. 1954) was for many years the head of the wind department at the Bence Szabolcsi Music School in Budapest. He has held several training courses for recorder teachers, and the recorder gatherings he organized in Budapest gave rise to the National László Czidra Recorder Competition. He is the author and editor of several publications on wind pedagogy, including methods for trombone and recorder.

Three compositions which belong together were written by Tihanyi in 1991-1992: Winterszenen, Nachtszene (night Scene) and Irrlichtspiel (Will o? the wisp). The Irrlichtspiel composition for violin solo and 19 instruments ensemble, came out of the notes for the song entitled Irrlicht in the fifth scene of Winterszenen (...this composition exactly follows the musical process of Winterreise by Schubert...). Here, the starting point was the refrain-like, pregnant rhythm motive, attached to the piano introduction of the Schubert song. At the end of the first part called Prelude, a miniature exposition prepares for the five developments. Their titles are: Adagio, Capriccio, Monolog, Pantomime and Postludio. Ãrpád Solti (born 1986) studied with Zoltán Jeney and Gyula Fekete at the Budapest Academy of Music, where he also studied piano and percussion. He has pursued advanced studies in Bruxelles and Gothenburg. His works - which range from solo pieces through chamber music and the award-winning orchestral composition Aktok [Nudes], which was premiered in 2011 at the New Hungarian Musical Forum's composers' competition - have been programmed featuring prominent Hungarian performers as well as the conductors Chelsea Tipton and Michael Francis and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra. Solti composed the Sonatina between 2006 and 2008. The piece has since been added to the compulsorycurriculum for percussion students at the Budapest Academy of Music. These pieces for four timpani show classical forms blended with the energetic musical language characteristic of Ãrpád Solti. The first, Rondino movement demands highly precise pedal work. It is followed by a meditative Intermezzo requiring discipline and depth on the part of the performer. The final Toccata presents percussionists with an excellent opportunity to let their technical skills shine brightly.

Gyula Dávid (1913-1977) was one of the most important members of the generation of Hungarian composers who followed Bartók and Kodály. His ?uvre includes stage, orchestral, oratorial, chamber, and solo instrumental works. Although he rarely quoted folk material directly in his music, folksong, popular music and the spirit of the Hungarian musical tradition permeates his works. In the last two decades of his life he wrote atonal and twelve-tone compositions. With his Wind Quintet (composed 1949) he created a genre which plays an important role in the new Hungarian music. Gyula Dávid studied composition with Albert Siklós and Zoltán Kodály at the Academy of Music in Budapest, graduating in 1938. Between 1938 and 1945 he worked in several orchestras as viola player. From 1945 to 1949 he was conductor at Hungarian National Theatre, than he became leader of the Ensemble of the Hungarian Army. From 1961 to his retirement he was professor at the Teacher Training Faculty of the Academy of Music in Budapest. Between 1951 and 1960 he taught wind chamber music, music theory and wind orchestration at the Academy of Music. He was one of the founders of the Hungarian Artists' Union. He was awarded the Erkel Prize (1952, 1955) and the Kossuth Prize (1957).

'Composed in 1910, Bartok's 'Two Pictures' for orchestra, too, draws on Debussy and folk music. Indeed, the title itself is a reference to Debussy's famous piano cycle, 'Images'. The two movements, 'In Full Flower' and 'Village Dance' represent two Bartokian movement types. The first one is the delicate and intimate music of nature. Debussy's influence is most tangible here. The second movement, 'Village Dance' is only related to the previous movement through its tonal system. It is, rather, a sort of 'bone and muscle' music that belongs to the barbaro type of movements, and as such, consists of possibly the simplest elements. Long sections consist of the continual repetition of a primitive motif. The work was first performed three years after its completion, on 25 February 1913, by the Budapest Philhamonic Orchestra, under the baton of Istvan Kerner.' Both of the works by the young composer (*1976) that appear in this volume are dedicated to the Budapest Saxophone Quartet. Motorway Junction, written in 1996, was the composer's first work in this genre, and it was followed by several transcriptions commissioned by the ensemble. In 1999, on the basis of the experience gained from these transcriptions he composed Alterego, which was likewise given its first performance by the BSQ.

Zoltán Kodály s unaccompanied mixed choruses first appeared in print in 1943 as a collected volume published by the association Magyar Kórus. This collection contained twenty-five works. In 1951, the volume was released again in the author s edition, being expanded with eight new compositions, but without Els áldozás (First Communion). Reprint editions of this collection had been distributed by Editio Musica Budapest until 1972, when a commemorative extended edition of the mixed choruses was issued, edited by Lajos Bárdos. Until now, reprints of this collection with forty-five compositions have been circulated. Péter Erdei carefully compared the printed edition with themanuscripts of the works preserved at the Kodály Archives. As a result of his work, in 2011 we emended a number of misprints, including those that had been inherited since the earliest print. Seventy-five years after the first release, the time has come for Kodály s collected choral works for mixed voices to appear in a completely new, expanded edition. Our collection contains six compositions that were not included in earlier editions: Jövel, Szentlélek eristen (Come, Holy Spirit), Miatyánk (The Lord s Prayer), Miserere, Salló Pista, Semmit ne bánkódjál (Do Not Grieve), ejesztend t köszönt (A Christmas Carol). In addition, two versions - both equally authentic - are published of the work known under the title of Naphimnusz (Canticle of the Sun), due to earlier editions the new release comes with lyrics in Hebrew and English (Adoration), as well as Dénes Szed s Hungarian translation (Napének [Hymn of the Sun]). This is the most complete and most authentic edition of Kodály s mixed choruses to date it is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions, and it contains new easily-legible music scores and an informative epilogue. Diese Ausgabe entstand unter der Mitwirkung von Lajos Bárdos.

The baritone (euphonium) is an important basic instrument in brass ensembles. The blowing technique is similar to that for the trombone and tuba, but the grip and handling technique are easier, thus it can be learnt as a preparatory instrument for them, from the age of 8 or 10. From the initial steps, first with breathing exercises, lip and mouthpiece exercises, then in ascending order ofdifficulty and gradually increasing the range of notes used, this volume provides daily exercises, scales, etudes, folk tunes and performance pieces, initiating the learner in the art of playing the baritone. The textual instructions are supplied in three languages: German, English and Hungarian. The trombonist Ferenc Steiner was born in 1931. From 1960 to 1991 he was a member of the Hungarian State Opera and the Philharmonic Society as well as the Hungarian Brass Ensemble. Education played a major role in the life of Ferenc Steiner as an author and editor of numerous pedagogical editions. He began teaching at the School of Music in Pécs, then moved on to the College for Officers of the Hungarian Defense Forces and later continued his teaching activity at the Liszt Academy in Budapest until 2001. He has passed away on the 25th of March in 2011. The piano accompaniment to this volume is published separately (14284P).
