With the unfinished revision (1739) as an appendix. The St. John Passion ranks among the great vocal works from Bach's Leipzig years. In contrast to his other large-scale choral works, however, Bach never gave this work a definitive final form. Rather, for every performance he made numerous changes. All previous editions of the St. John Passion have combined readings from various layers of sources. The wish often expressed by conductors to perform an authentic version is made possible for the first time with the present edition in this fourth and final version which was performed under Bach's direction in 1749. At the same time, with the aid of the appendix it is possible to perform the work in the traditional mixed version.. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3124500.

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy created a standard work with his final violin concerto in E minor op. 64 MWV O 14 that is now firmly established in today's concert repertoire. When in 1838 the composer indicated that he had in mind a violin concerto [...] in E minor [...], it was not only his friend Ferdinand David, the Gewandhaus concertmaster for whom it was intended, who was euphoric. The whole civilized violin world was awaiting this concerto - and yet it was another seven years before the much-anticipated composition was ultimately published by the Leipzig publishing house Breitkopf & Hartel in June 1845, as well as simultaneously in London and Milan. The concerto particularly appeals through its innovative treatment of the solo part, not only because the solo violin strikingly opens the first movement without a preceding orchestral tutti, but also because of its musical dialogue with the orchestra. The Leipzig Gewandhaus premiere on 13 March 1845 with Ferdinand David as soloist under the direction of Nils Wilhelm Gade served - as so frequently with Mendelssohn - virtually as a proofreading process. After the composer subsequently made extensive changes that also involved David, the work first appeared just short of nine months later. The first edition documents the composer's valid final revision, which is reproduced as the work's main version in the present Urtext edition. The matching piano reduction includes not only an unmarked string part, but also a part with the established markings by Igor Oistrach.

The extraordinarily high reputation among Handel's contemporaries of his Passion Oratorio to words by Brockes is indicated by the fact that no less eminent a musician than Johann Sebastian Bach himself made a copy of this work. Although Bach copied it without making substantial changes in it, our edition of the work brings together two of the greatest baroque composers. The Brockes Passion was - not only for the Leipzig Thomaskantor - an alternative to the betterknown Bach Passions. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5504800.

The work has a military feel in the opening fanfare, but settles down to an angular melody with frequent changes in time signature. There is the possibility of adding extra drummers near the end - a drum corps was used behind the Band in the first performance making a stunning effect.PANACHE was commissioned by Lt. Peter Rutterford who was then Director of Music for the Band of the Royal Marines (FOSNI). Peter was about to leave the Rosyth and wanted to have a celebratory work for his departure. The resulting piece was titled by him and to reflect his outgoing personality, and the first performance was given by Lt. Rutterford with the Royal Marines Band in the Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline, Scotland.

From the pen of Lennie Niehaus comes another knockout work suitable for festivals and concerts. This overture is filled with rhythmic vitality, soaring melodies, and colorful timbres. Set in ternary form, the A sections offer meter changes. All players need to be comfortable with the eighth note pulse so that transitions from 4/4 to 3/8 to 4/4 remain smooth and in tempo. The B section provides a warm contrast to the outer sections of the piece. Work to achieve long, flowing phrases in a legato style. Encourage string players to use vibrato, even on sustained notes.

Festival Prelude 'Ad Excel' was commissioned by the AD Concert Band, from Solihull in the UK, to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in2016. The title, Ad Excel, is a play on words: it is Latin for 'to excel' but also celebrates the bands anniversary as XL is 40 in Roman numerals. The work opens with a bright fanfare with frequent changes of meter. This leads to a playful main subject, played first by woodwinds, followed by full band. A bridge passage leads to a legato second subject, played twice. The bridge passage returns to introduce the both main melodies in new keys and instrumentations before a coda, derived from the opening fanfare, bringsthe work to a close.

Dedicated to William (Bill) Maupin, a friend and fellow music educator of Claude T. Smith, Castlebrooke Overture is a perfect piece to introduce younger ensembles to meter changes and a couple measures in 3/8 time. This flexible arrangement allows ensembles to perform the work with as few as ten musicians providing accessibility and flexibility for numerous instrumentation needs, while still allowing a full ensemble sound. *The posted recording is based on the full band scoring but aligns with the suggested preferences for either woodwinds/strings or brass suggested in the score.

Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie is one of two concertante works completed, premiered and published during his lifetime. He was commissioned to write it in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910. Debussy orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. While transferring the clarinet part from the already published version for clarinet and piano, he made a few subtle changes, particularly in m. 201, which has been a bone of contention among clarinettists for over a century. The present scholarly-critical publication is the first Urtext edition of the orchestral version. It draws on every known source and takes into account a previously ignored source that sheds new light on the piece.

1864: Wagner is saved
ISBN 9783765104169. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. German.
The year 1864 brought some major changes in Richard Wagner's life, which could not have been any more dramatic than at that time: fleeing from his creditors in Vienna, the composer twice misses the emissary of the young Bavarian King Ludwig II before this envoy is finally able to personally announce the composer's appointment to the court of Munich on 3 May 1864. Through his acquaintanceship with Ludwig II, Wagner is liberated from all material cares from this point on and can concentrate on the completion and performance of his works. Later, in Wagner's country house on Lake Starnberg, Wagner and Cosima von Bulow seal their union. Of the 332 letters in this volume, 92 were hitherto unpublished or could only be found in excerpts in autograph catalogues. The commentaries are based on many previously unpublished documents, for example from the estate of Peter Cornelius.1864: Wagner is saved.
