After completing his studies with Zoltan Kodaly, the Hungarian composer Mathias Seiber (1905-1960) first worked as a musician in a dance orchestra on an ocean liner which gave him the opportunity to listen to jazz music in New York. From 1928 he taught the first jazz class worldwide at Dr. Koch's Conservatoire in Frankfurt. In the winter term of 1928/29, 19 students had registered with whom he gave a public concert on 3 March 1929 which was broadcast by Radio Frankfurt. After the Nazis had seized power, the jazz class was dissolved, Seiber lost his job and emigrated to London. In 1932 he wrote his piano cycle 'Leichte Tanze' (Easy Dances), one of the early examples of the adoption of jazz forms and styles in so-called serious music. The present arrangement for orchestra is easily playable and is aimed at youth and amateur orchestras. Instrumentation: 2 flutes, clarinet, oboe (ad lib.), alto saxophone, trumpet, bassoon and strings. Movements: Cake Walk - Novelty Foxtrot - Gipsy Tango - Waltz - Walzer - Blues - Charleston.

LOVE WILL FIND A WAY is one of the great hits of the 1920s – an era of remarkable cultural growth giving rise to “The Roaring '20s,†“The Harlem Renaissance,†and a fun-loving society known for the Charleston dance craze and the surge of jazz into the mainstream of American music. A song from Shuffle Along, the first all-Black Broadway musical, LOVE WILL FIND A WAY has been arranged by pianist Jeremy Siskind especially for Lara Downes’ recording that launches the Rising Sun series.According to Langston Hughes, Eubie Blake’s 1921 Shuffle Along was the real start of the Harlem Renaissance. In Hughes’ words: “Everybody was in the audience, including me. It gave just the proper push, a pre-Charleston kick, to that Negro vogue of the '20s that spread to books, African sculpture, music, and dancing.â€As Broadway’s first all-Black hit musical, with an all-star cast including Paul Robeson and a young Josephine Baker, Shuffle Along ran for an unprecedented 504 performances in New York, then toured nationally for three years as the first Black musical to play in white theaters across the United States. The show’s appeal to a multi-racial audience, and its integration of the jazz and Broadway communities, not only changed the history of the American musical theater, but made important strides forward in American race relations.Love Will Find a Way is one of the show’s most popular tunes. This intimate, pensive arrangement by Jeremy Siskind celebrates the song’s centenary by making it a love song for our own time as much as its own – a reminder that no matter how dark the path or how gray the skies, love will always find a way.

With his diptych for voice and piano, Two Black Churches, Shawn Okpebholo commemorates the Black lives lost to two racist attacks in the recent history of the United States: the girls murdered in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963, and those massacred during the shooting at the Mother Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina in 2015. The first movement sets the poem Ballad of Birmingham by Dudley Randall, written from the points of view of one of the Birmingham bombing's young victims and of her mother; the second sets a new text, The Rain, written for this piece by South Carolina's first poet laureate, Marcus Amaker, in memory of the victims of the Charleston massacre.
Two Black Churches was composed for baritone Will Liverman, who commissioned the piece, and pianist Paul Sanchez, who gave the work its streaming premiere together in June 2020. This vocal score includes a full program note from the composer and reprints the text as well as a dedication to each of the thirteen whose lives were taken in these attacks. The duration of the piece is approximately 17 minutes.

Thereâ??s a Boat Datâ??s Leavinâ?? Soon for New York/It Ainâ??t Necessarily So/Summertime/I Got Plenty o' Nuttinâ?? is a song from the American opera Porgy and Bess, composed in 1935 by George Gershwin (1898-1937), to a libretto by DuBose Heyward and his brother Ira Gershwin, after Heywardâ??s novel Porgy - a story about the love between the crippled negro beggar Porgy and the girl Bess in the city of Charleston in South Carolina. The première - not a huge success - took place on 10 October 1935 in New York. With his opera, Gershwin wanted to gain recognition as a composer of classical music. Incidentally he demanded that all parts were sung by black performers; only a few unimportant parts, without sung lyrics, were allowed to be performed by white actors. This rule still applies: Gershwin has stated in the terms of his will that only black people were allowed stage the opera.Porgy and Bess has become popular only after Gershwinâ??s death. In 1959 a wonderful film was made; the soundtrack won a Grammy Award. The work is not very often performed, possibly because of the difficulty of finding a whole cast of black opera singers. However, various pieces from the opera are still regularly performed in numerous arrangements. I Got Plenty o' Nuttin' ist ein Lied aus der amerikanischen Oper Porgy and Bess die George Gershwin im 1935 komponierte.Das Libretto lieferten DuBose Heyward und Georges Bruder Ira Gershwin nach Heywards Roman Porgy, einer Geschichte über die Liebe zwischen dem verkrüppelten schwarzen Bettler Porgy und dem Mädchen Bess in Charleston im Staat South Carolina.
