Debussy's Premiere Rhapsodie is one of two concertante works completed, premiered and published during his lifetime. He was commissioned to write it in 1909 for the final examination at the Paris Conservatoire in 1910. Debussy orchestrated it in the summer of 1911. While transferring the clarinet part from the already published version for clarinet and piano, he made a few subtle changes, particularly in m. 201, which has been a bone of contention among clarinettists for over a century. The present scholarly-critical publication is the first Urtext edition of the orchestral version. It draws on every known source and takes into account a previously ignored source that sheds new light on the piece.

Fetes galantes was actually planned as a hybrid opera-ballet to a libretto by Debussy's friend Louis Laloy. For this, Laloy arranged selected poetry by Paul Verlaine into three tableaux, replacing an earlier (unstarted) Debussyan project with Charles Morice entitled Crimen amoris. During his last productive summer of 1915, Debussy set a sequence from the start of the first tableau, 'Les Masques', involving stanzas 1 and 3 of the opening song for Mezzetin in Verlaine's comedy Les Uns et les autres. The action is set in a park a la Watteau late one summer afternoon as Mezzetin attempts to entertain a group of nonchalant masqueraders with only the aid of his voice and a mandolin. This appears to have been prefaced by a slower, elegiac introduction reminiscent of the opening of the comtemporary Cello Sonata and it leads to a danced minuet by the masqued dancers which has clear echoes of the piano piece L'Isle Joyeuse (1904). Following Laloy's scenario, the mas-queraders then sing extracts from Verlaine's 'A la promenade' (from Fetes galantes itself). The minuet returns at greater length before being cut short by a chilly gust of wind, after which the park returns to its orginal state (and music) as though nothing had really happened.

The original, unsimplified version of one of Debussy's most popular Piano works. This ethereal, flowing section of Suite Bergamasque is diatonic and displays a conventional harmonic vocabulary in D-flat major. Thetitle, Clair De Lune, suggests a relationship to Paul Verlaine's eponymous poem, describing a vision of long-dead dancers in the moonlight. The music transmits the otherworldly, transparent, and impalpablequalities of the experience while maintaining clarity and definition. Perfect for the burgeoning late intermediate pianist. Edited by Willard A. Palmer.

In 1920, a Parisian magazine asked several leading composers to compose musical tributes to the famous French musician Claude Debussy, who had died in 1918. The great Spanish composer Manuel De Falla (1876-1946) wasone of them: having met Debussy in Paris, he had been heavily influenced by the French impressionists. His Homenaje (Homage) was his only work for solo Guitar, although it was arranged by the composer for soloPiano almost immediately. It is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of early 20th century music - at only three minutes in length, it is often said it has twenty minutes' worth of music contained within it.

This beautiful melody from the French master of romance makes an ideal piano which can be used in a great variety of circumstances from weddings to funerals.

French pianist, arranger, composer and conductor, Jean Michel Defaye (b. 1932) entered the Paris Conservatoire at the mere age of ten years old. His successful compositions and arrangements were mainly for brass, In the Style of Debussy, composed in 2002 for Trombone and Piano, being no exception. With a typical performance lasting about five minutes, Defaye's In the Style of Debussy reflects the compositional techniques of Claude Debussy by use of chromaticism, evocative melodic passages, spread chords in the accompaniment and a calm nature. Defaye's passion to explore a variety of preceding composers is clear with In the Style of Debussy being a part of a series which explores the music of many great composers. For all aspiring trombonists wishing to vary and expand their repertoire, In the Style of Debussy by Jean Michel Defaye is essential..

(Nicolaus A. Huber).
