A work which offers most interesting aspects also for studying, yet it is so difficult to perform that only a very correct and thoroughly edited score can provide the orchestral conductor with the proper presentation, this is what Wagner himself determined on 24 May 1860, when with his third attempt he finally had found the proper form for the overture of the Flying Dutchman. Indeed, he succeeded in writing a forceful concert piece which anticipates the story of the opera in a concentrated form: a dramatic Dutchman theme with thunderbolt and storm in Allegro con brio - and in contrast Senta's love theme in Andante, d minor against f major with the resulting conflicts and tensions. It's good that with the present edition the conductor can count on a very correct and thoroughly edited score!

The organ sonatas of Walter Battison Haynes and Hugh Blair demonstrate a notable peak in the development of the English organ sonata as a work that is musically cohesive. As discussed in The Genesis and Development of an English Organ Sonata (2017), the portfolio approach towards compositions under one title, a sonata, that included sometimes significantly contrasting movements of varying technical difficulty was common during the second half of the nineteenth century not least as a published example of the compositional skill of composers. Whereas these two sonatas join the tradition of works that could be convincingly played on both medium and large instruments and allow for creativity in registration they are also cohesive pieces that could serve in a concert programme. These works join the legacy of English organ sonatas that had an important pedagogical role jointly inherited from Mendelssohn’s very practical and popular approach to the instrument and the continued European legacy of the lesson-sonata tradition whereby in learning a piece you also learned the instrument and vice versa. They are both idiomatically written and musically rewarding pieces that are imbued with the undeniably English harmonic language of the era that was to remain popular for several decades to come.

No longer just a facsimile: Sibelius's Symphony No. 0 in a proper edition With the world premiere of Kullervo in 1892, Jean Sibelius staked his claim at the age of 27 to the front ranks of the symphonists of his day, long before he began writing his purely instrumental symphonies and tone poems. At the same time, he defined himself as a modern-day Finnish composer through his choice of the text from the Kalevala epic, whose title role he interpreted with modern psychological means. By the time Sibelius was celebrating his major international triumphs in the early 20th century, his Symphony No. 0 was long forgotten. After a provisory first edition of Kullervo in 1966, the work quickly gained the esteem of Sibelius conductors who also performed the work with the Finnish vocal text outside of their native country. Yet in spite of pioneer recordings such as those of Paavo Berglund, Colin Davis, Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Osmo Vanska, the grandiose work had not been adequately present in international concert life up to now not least because there was no practicable edition. The volumes of the Complete Edition edited by Glenda Dawn Goss now offer a musicologically accurate music text for the first time. This music text will form the basis for the projected performance material. The complete edition Jean Sibelius Werke intends to pave the way for a new evaluation of the Finnish composer and, in particular, of this hitherto editorially neglected work, the composer's only choral symphony.

Born in Bicester in 1931, Anthony Hedges studied music at Keble College, Oxford, and left university with a first class honours degree and a post-graduate degree in composition. Following National Service as solo pianist and arranger with the Royal Signals Band, he spent the next five years as a lecturer at the Royal Scottish Academy of music. During that time he was a regular contributor on music to many national newspapers and journals. In 1962 he moved to Hull University where, he became, until his retirement in 1995, Reader in Composition. In 1972 he was elected Chairman of The Composers' Guild of Great Britain, served as joint-Chairman in 1973 and was subsequently elected to the Guild's Council. He has been a member of the music panels of Yorkshire Arts and Lincolnshire and Humberside Arts, the Music Board of C.N.N.A., and a Council member of the S.P.N.M. A Council member of Westminster Central Music Library for 15 years, he instituted its publishing scheme for contemporary British scores. As a pianist he has given regular solo recitals, and as an accompanist has worked with many leading performers. In the late 1970s he founded the Humberside Sinfonia with whom he gave numerous successful concerts as well as recording a highly-praised LP of his music. Anthony Hedges is equally successful in many types of music. His serious music has received wide critical acclaim; his light music enjoys numerous broadcasts, recordings and public performances. He has also written much music for children and amateurs as well as having composed for film, stage, ballet and television. His works have been performed by many major British orchestras and heard worldwide in many hundreds of broadcast and public performances. In 1991 he was the featured composer in the Riga Festival of British Music and Film and was subsequently invited back to Latvia to conduct further performances of his works. A prolific composer, much of his output has resulted from commissions - over 60 to date*. In 1990 Hull Central Library established an Archive collection of all his compositions and working sketches. A CD of his light orchestral music was issued in 1997 (Naxos/Marco Polo) and many CD recordings have followed on various labels.
