The three paraphrases on Veni Creator can be used both in liturgical and concert settings. The text derives from Rabanus Maurus Magnentius (9th century) and the melody is based on Ambrosian hymnody (4th century).

The rushing of the Holy Spirit to which the hymn 'Veni creator' refers is symbolized by fast semiquaver runs of the organ which return again and again during the whole piece. Alternately, the text is interpreted musically in seven verses according to the respective content. Traditional melodies appear in a contemporary harmonic makeup. From this context emerges a field of tension between old and new which eventually dissolves in the 'Amen' of the vocal soloist. The work on the rather demanding piece is rewarding for every performer and the performance at the church is very impressive.

After musical training in Naples Niccolo Jommelli began to make his name as an opera composer from the end of the 1730ies onwards. From 1750 until 1753 he was assistant director of music at St. Peter's, Rome, and responsible for the music at the Cappella Giulia - years which were decisive for Jommelli's sacred music. During those years he also composed the three-movement setting of the Whitsun hymn Veni Creator Spiritus for solo soprano, mixed-voice choir, string orchestra and continuo. It is marked by the maturity of the writing for the solo voice, modelled on the example of composers such as Johann Adolf Hasse, and by stylistic hallmarks of Jommelli's music, such as his relatively simple yet highly effective choral writing. Wolfram Buchenberg structured his setting of the Veni creator Spiritus as an urgent and powerful invitation to the creative spirit. The frequent reprises of this line of text, like a motto, are contrasted with passages of great stillness interspersed with rests. The vitality of God's spirit is finally expressed in a section which draws its inner dynamic from the interplay of different phrase lengths between the melody and accompaniment.

The sonata premiered in 2016 is based on the Luther chorale Komm, Gott Schopfer, Heiliger Geist (Come, God Creator, Holy Spirit) and consists of three parts: 'The first movement transforms the first eight notes of the chorale melody into a virtuoso figurative movement, the second movement presents the complete chorale in a highly chromatic harmonization. The concluding fugue is treated in three development sections becoming successively more animated in rhythm and dynamics.' (Stefan Heucke).
