ISBN 9782897963026. Francis Bebey est né à Douala en juillet 1929, dans une grande famille où son père, pasteur, luttait pour nourrir ses enfants. Mais Francis a eu l'opportunité d'aller à l'école. Admirant son frère aîné, Marcel Eyidi Bebey, il s'est éduqué, s'est distingué, et a finalement reçu une bourse pour passer son baccalauréat en France. Nous approchions de la fin des années 1950 lorsqu'il est arrivé à La Rochelle. Plus que jamais, dans cette France où les Africains étaient regardés avec curiosité, condescendance ou dédain, Francis s'appuyait sur ses ressources intellectuelles. Travailleur assidu, il a obtenu son baccalauréat, puis s'est installé à Paris où il a commencé des études d'anglais à la Sorbonne. Un jour, il a su ce qui l'attirait vraiment : il voulait faire de la radio. Francis a appris son métier en France et aux �tats-Unis. Après avoir travaillé quelques années comme reporter, il a été embauché en 1961 en tant que fonctionnaire international au Département de l'information de l'UNESCO. Parallèlement, Francis a toujours été attiré par la création musicale. Son activité diurne très sérieuse ne l'empêchait pas de fréquenter les clubs de jazz le soir. � Paris, le jazz, la musique à la mode à cette époque, mais aussi la rumba et la salsa l'attiraient. Il collectionnait les disques et assistait à de nombreux concerts. Avec son complice Manu Dibango, Francis montait sur scène et jouait de la musique. Francis aimait la musique classique depuis son enfance. Il avait grandi en écoutant les cantates et les oratorios de Bach ou Handel que son père chantait au temple. Il s'est passionné pour la guitare, impressionné par les maîtres espagnols et sud-américains, et a décidé d'apprendre à jouer de l'instrument lui-même. Il a commencé à composer des pièces pour guitare, mêlant les diverses influences qui le traversaient avec la musique traditionnelle africaine qu'il portait en lui depuis son enfance. Son approche a captivé le directeur du Centre culturel américain (alors situé dans le quartier de Saint-Germain à Paris), qui lui a offert l'opportunité de se produire devant un public. Francis y a donné son premier récital de guitare (1963) devant un public hypnotisé. Son premier album solo est sorti peu de temps après. Progressivement, Francis est devenu reconnu comme musicien et compositeur. Plusieurs albums de l'ambassadeur africain de la guitare, comme le décrivait la presse, sont sortis. Il a également écrit des livres, au point que sa carrière artistique est devenue difficile à concilier avec sa carrière de fonctionnaire. En 1974, même s'il était devenu le directeur général chargé de la musique à l'UNESCO, il a fait le saut audacieux et a démissionné de cette prestigieuse institution pour se consacrer aux trois activités qui l'intéressaient : la musique, la littérature et le journalisme. Il a exploré le patrimoine musical traditionnel du continent africain, notamment à travers le piano à pouce sanza et la musique polyphonique des pygmées d'Afrique centrale, ou en chantant dans sa langue maternelle et en composant des chansons humoristiques en français ! Le succès a suivi. Francis Bebey a parcouru le monde : de la France au Brésil, du Cameroun à la Suède, de l'Allemagne aux Caraïbes, ou du Maroc au Japon... la liste des pays où il a été invité à se produire, à donner des conférences ou à rencontrer des lecteurs est très longue. En plus de la reconnaissance publique, il bénéficiait de la reconnaissance de ses collègues musiciens, tels que le guitariste John Williams ou le Vénézuélien Antonio Lauro, qui l'ont invité à faire partie du jury d'un concours de guitare classique à Caracas. Sa vie était le voyage d'un pionnier africain, un homme enraciné dans son patrimoine culturel et portant un message de partage et d'espoir pour le monde. Son originalité continue de résonner dans le monde entier depuis son décès à la fin du mois de mai 2001.
Francis Bebey was born in Douala in July 1929, into a large family where his father, a pastor, struggled to feed his children. But Francis had the opportunity to go to school. Admiring his elder brother, Marcel Eyidi Bebey, he educated himself, distinguished himself, and eventually received a scholarship to go and take his baccalaureate in France. We approached the end of the 1950s when he arrived in La Rochelle. More than ever, in this France where Africans were looked at with curiosity, condescension, or disdain, Francis relied on his intellectual resources. A diligent worker, he obtained his Baccalaureate, then moved to Paris where he started English studies at the Sorbonne. One day, he knew what truly attracted him: he wanted to do radio. Francis learned his craft in France and in the USA. After working for a few years as a reporter, he was hired in 1961 as an international civil servant in the UNESCO Information Department. In parallel, Francis had always been drawn to musical creation. His very serious daytime activity didnâ??t prevent him from frequenting jazz clubs in the evenings. In Paris, the Jazz, the trendy music of that time, but also rumba and salsa attracted him. He collected records and attended numerous concerts. With his accomplice Manu Dibango, Francis took the stage and played music. Francis liked classical music since his childhood. He grew up listening to the cantatas and oratorios of Bach or Handel that his father had sung in the temple. He became passionate about the guitar, impressed by the Spanish and South American masters, and decided to learn to strum the instrument himself. He started composing guitar pieces, blending the various influences that flow through him with the traditional African music he had carried within since childhood. His approach captivated the director of the American Cultural Center (then located in the Saint-Germain neighborhood of Paris), who offered him the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Francis gave his first guitar recital there (1963) in front of a mesmerized audience. His first solo album was released shortly thereafter. Gradually, Francis became recognized as a musician and composer. Several albums of the African guitar ambassador, as described by the press, were released. He also wrote books, to the point that his artistic career became challenging to reconcile with his career as a civil servant. In 1974, even though he had become the General Manager in charge of music at UNESCO, he took the bold leap and resigned from this prestigious institution to dedicated himself to the three activities that interested him: music, literature, and journalism. He explored the traditional musical heritage of the African continent, notably through the thumb piano sanza, and the polyphonic music of the Central African pygmies, or singing in his native language and composing humoristic songs in French! Success followed. Francis Bebey traveled the world: from France to Brazil, Cameroon to Sweden, Germany to the Carribean, or Morocco to Japan... the list of countries where he was invited to perform, gives lectures, or meets readers is very long. In addition to public recognition, he enjoyed the recognition of his fellow musicians, such as guitarist John Williams or Venezuelan Antonio Lauro, who invited him to be a part of the jury for a classical guitar competition in Caracas. His life was the journey of an African pioneer, a man rooted in his cultural heritage and carrying a message of sharing and hope for the world. Washed up on the Phaeacian shore after a shipwreck, Odysseus is introduced to King Alcinous. As he sits in the palace, he tells the Phaeacians of his wanderings since leaving Troy. Odysseus and his men fi rst landed on the island of the Cicones wherethey sacked the city of Ismarus. From there, great storms swept them to the land of the hospitable Lotus Eaters. Then they sailed to the land of the Cyclopes. Odysseus and twelve of his men entered the cave of Polyphemus. After the single-eyed giantmade handfuls of his men into meals, Odysseus fi nally defeated him. He got him drunk and once he had fallen asleep, he and his men stabbed a glowing spike into the Cyclop’s single eye, completely blinding him. They escaped by clinging to the belliesof some sheep. Once aboard, Odysseus taunted the Cyclop by revealing him his true identity. Enraged, Polyphemus hurled rocks at the ship, trying to sink it. After leaving the Cyclopes’ island, they arrived at the home of Aeolus, ruler of the winds.Aeolus off ered Odysseus a bag trapping all the strong winds within except one - the one which would take him straight back to Ithaca. As the ship came within sight of Ithaca, the crewmen, curious about the bag, decided to open it. The winds escapedand stirred up a storm. Odysseus and his crew came to the land of the cannibalistic Laestrygonians, who sank all but one of the ships. The survivors went next to Aeaea, the island of the witch-goddess Circe. Odysseus sent out a scouting party butCirce turned them into pigs. With the help of an antidote the god Hermes had given him, Odysseus managed to overpower the goddess and forced her to change his men back to human form. When it was time for Odysseus to leave, Circe told him to sail tothe realm of the dead to speak with the spirit of the seer Tiresias. One day’s sailing took them to the land of the Cimmerians. There, he performed sacrifi ces to attract the souls of the dead. Tiresias told him what would happen to him next. He thengot to talk with his mother, Anticleia, and met the spirits of Agamemnon, Achilles, Patroclus, Antilochus, Ajax and others. He then saw the souls of the damned Tityos, Tantalus, and Sisyphus. Odysseus soon found himself mobbed by souls. He becamefrightened, ran back to his ship, and sailed away. While back at Aeaea, Circe told him about the dangers he would have to face on his way back home. She advised him to avoid hearing the song of the Sirens; but if he really felt he had to hear, thenhe should be tied to the mast of the ship, which he did. Odysseus then successfully steered his crew past Charybdis (a violent whirlpool) and Scylla (a multiple-headed monster), but Scylla managed to devour six of his men. Finally, Odysseus and hissurviving crew approached the island where the Sun god kept sacred cattle. Odysseus wanted to sail past, but the crewmen persuaded him to let them rest there. Odysseus passed Circe’s counsel on to his men. Once he had fallen asleep, his men impiouslykilled and ate some of the cattle. When the Sun god found out, he asked Zeus to punish them. Shortly after they set sail from the island, Zeus destroyed the ship and all the men died except for Odysseus. After ten days, Odysseus was washed up on theisland of the nymph Calypso.

Dort bringt Odysseus Opfer, um die Seelen der Toten anzurufen. Teireisas sagt ihm sein Schicksal voraus. Dann darf Odysseusmit seiner Mutter Antikleia und den Seelen von Agamemnon, Achilles, Patroklos, Antilochus, Ajax und anderen Toten sprechen. Dann sieht er die Seelen der Verdammten Tityos, Tantalos und Sisyphos. Bald wird Odysseus selbst von den Seelen gequält, kehrtvoll Angst zu seinem Schiff zurück und segelt davon. In Aiaia hatte Kirke ihn vor den drohenden Gefahren der Heimreise gewarnt. Sie riet ihm, den Gesang der Sirenen zu vermeiden, wenn er aber unbedingt zuhören müsse, solle er sich an denMast seines Schiff es bindet lassen, was er dann auch tut. Dann führt Odysseus seine Mannschaft erfolgreich durch die Meerenge zwischen Skylla und Charybdis, wobei Skylla jedoch sechs seiner Männer verschlingt. Schließlich erreichen Odysseusund die überlebende Besatzung die Insel, auf der der Sonnengott Helios heiliges Vieh hält. Odysseus will weitersegeln, aber seine Mannschaft überredet ihn zu einer Rast. Odysseus erzählt ihnen von Kirkes Warnung, aber kaum, dass ereingeschlafen ist, töten die Männer in gotteslästerlicher Weise einige Rinder und verspeisen sie. Als Helios dies entdeckt, bittet er Zeus, sie zu bestrafen. Kurz nachdem sie die Segel für die Abreise von der Insel gesetzt haben, zerstört Zeusdas Schiff und alle außer Odysseus sterben. Nach zehn Tagen wird Odysseus an den Strand der Insel der Nymphe Kalypso angespült.
Ulysse, épuisé par la terrible tempête qu’il a subie, échoue sur le rivage des Phéaciens. Reçu au palais du roi Alcinoos, Ulysse entreprend le récit des épreuves passées depuis son départ de Troie. Arrivés dans l’île des Cicones, Ulysse et ses compagnons mettent la cité d’Ismaros sac puis reprennent la mer. Les vents les emportent chez les Lotophages, un peuple paisible. Ulysse aborde au pays des Cyclopes. Il pénètre dans la caverne de Polyphème accompagné de douze hommes. Après avoir vu le Cyclope dévorer deux de ses compagnons chaque repas, Ulysse ruse pour lui échapper. Il l’enivre puis embrase un épieu taillé, qu’il plante dans l'œil unique du Cyclope endormi,l’aveuglant définitivement. Les survivants sortent ensuite cachés sous le ventre de ses brebis et regagnent leurs bateaux. Faisant preuve d’orgueil, Ulysse crie sa véritable identité au risque de faire sombrer son navire sous une pluie de rochers. Ulysse aborde l’île d’Eolie, au royaume du maître des vents. Eole offre Ulysse un vent favorable pour regagner Ithaque, et une outre renfermant tous les vents contraires. Hélas, la curiosité des marins d’Ulysse aura raison de cet heureux dénouement car, en ouvrant l’outre, les vents contraires s’échappent et déchaînent une nouvelle tempête. Après avoir dérivé plusieurs jours, ils parviennent chez les Lestrygons cannibales qui détruisent l’escadre. Les survivants reprennent la mer avec un unique navire et abordent dans l’île d’Aiaié, séjour de la magicienne Circé. Ulysse envoie des éclaireurs dans les terres. Imprudemment entrés dans la demeure de la magicienne, ils sont transformés en pourceaux. Seul Ulysse échappe au sortilège gr ce l’antidote que lui indique Hermès. Vaincue, Circé s’offre au héros et rend ses compagnons leur forme humaine. Avant de laisser partir Ulysse, Circé lui conseille d’aller au pays des morts consulter l’ombre du devin Tirésias. Après une journée de navigation, le bateau d’Ulysse atteint le pays des Cimmériens. Il teatro d’opera, all’interno dell’intero patrimonio musicale del repertorio cólto, ma per dir meglio, all’interno del portato culturale che ha investito – tramite la sua nascita – dapprima l’Italia e poi l’Europa tutta, mantiene inalterato nel tempo un riconoscimento di grande valore. In virtù di questo primato, un’attenzione particolare gli è conferita anche in questa sede, nella quale si è voluto condurre lo studente alla scoperta di tre importanti capolavori. Diversamente da quanto si sia portati a credere, l’opera non è unicamente repertorio per vecchi e canuti parrucconi, ma è spettacolo in grado di catturare anche un pubblico d’età scolare. Attraverso le molteplici espressioni con le quali l’opera si manifesta (musica e parola su tutte, ma anche gesto e danza, insieme a gestione dello spazio scenico e della luce, elementi che definiscono tutti la complessa dimensione drammaturgica), il teatro d’opera si pone come spettacolo multimediale ante litteram capace come pochi di riassumere esemplarmente in un solo concetto rappresentazioni di pienezza e complessità culturale assai variegate. Nel tratteggiare la ricchezza di un viaggio alla scoperta dell’opera, si potrebbe affermare che addentrarsi nelle narrazioni di un Figaro, di un Don Giovanni, di un Rigoletto sia un po’ come se da un solo assaggio si degustassero più sapori, come se si riuscisse a cogliere l’intero panorama solamente sbirciando da un foro. In questa operazione si possono identificare gli estremi di una visione ologrammatica della realtà , quella che ci consente di mettere in evidenza come una parte sia inscritta nel tutto, ma quanto il tutto stesso costituisca una parte. Questo apparente paradosso, che ci sembra possa essere rappresentato anche dal teatro musicale, è alla base di quell’atteggiamento che ci consente di evitare operazioni di riduzionismo e di semplificazione, e di aumentare invece i livelli di relazione e di complessità con le esperienze che ci accadono. Il quaderno si rivolge ad allievi non digiuni dei primi rudimenti di alfabetizzazione sonora ed esplora – data la specificità della collana – soprattutto la dimensione musicale, anche se non tralascia di guidare all’indagine delle relazioni che la musica ha con gli altri linguaggi che costruiscono lo spettacolo. Non è un caso, per di più, che ancora una volta e come costante metodologica che accompagna tutti i quaderni, ci si avvalga anche qui del segno, del gesto, della parola come strategie per la conoscenza dei mezzi espressivi e per l’esplorazione dei significati, tutti meccanismi necessari ad innescare un ascolto attivo. La scelta di opere e autori si è imposta quasi naturalmente: Mozart, Rossini, Verdi sono ovunque riconoscibili come figure emblematiche del genere operistico. Nessuno potrebbe affermare di aver assaggiato la Sacher Torte senza essere stato a Vienna, così come nessuno potrebbe sostenere di aver assaporato l’opera senza aver avuto occasione di avvicinarsi a questi tre autori. L’intento del quaderno è dunque quello di fornire supporti all’allievo e all’insegnante per favorire scoperte, per far nascere curiosità . Gli obiettivi del lavoro si perdono però a metà strada nel momento in cui non si ponga a conclusione del percorso la visione dell’opera. L’auspicio e l’invito è dunque quello di uscire dalle aule e di recarsi, senza esitazioni, a teatro. Riferimenti costanti nella selezione delle musiche sono stati il livello di difficoltà e la specifica fascia d’età a cui è rivolto il volume, pur mantenendo come obiettivi primari l’ampliamento del bagaglio musicale dell’allievo e l’ottenimento di una gratificazione da parte dello stesso sia nello studio che nell’esecuzione dei brani. Più che a fornire nozioni, le semplici e sintetiche note che accompagnano ogni singolo brano tendono a vivacizzare lo studio e a sollecitare fantasia e curiosità , «ingredienti» certamente importanti nello studio della musica. Il volume si conclude con indicazioni generali sulla chitarra cosiddetta d'accompagnamento e semplici canzoncine utili a un primo approccio a tale stile.

Ciò che accomuna gli autori presenti nel volume sono ovviamente la chitarra e i riferimenti - per appartenenza geografica o per ispirazione - a stili, forme e sonorità caratteristici di varie culture, qui proposti in una insolita combinazione, anche stilistica, che mi auguro susciterà negli allievi curiosità e motivazione, impulsi indispensabili lungo la strada di una formazione approfondita e completa. Il volume, diviso in cinque sezioni dedicate a Giappone, Argentina, Russia, Brasile e Stati Uniti, contiene musiche di compositori del passato ma anche brani di tre giovani autori contemporanei, Roberto González Ãlvarez, Mariano Fraga e LuÃs Fabiano Farias Borges i quali, aderendo con grande entusiasmo alla mia richiesta di scrivere qualcosa di specifico per questo progetto, hanno composto lavori (qui riportati con le diteggiature originali) che, oltre ad offrire notevoli spunti didattici, veicolano cultura e bellezza e meritano a pieno titolo di essere inseriti in un repertorio concertistico. After leaving the Cyclopes’ island, they arrived at the home of Aeolus, ruler of the winds.Aeolus off ered Odysseus a bag trapping all the strong winds within except one - the one which would take him straight back to Ithaca. As the ship came within sight of Ithaca, the crewmen, curious about the bag, decided to open it. The winds escapedand stirred up a storm. Odysseus and his crew came to the land of the cannibalistic Laestrygonians, who sank all but one of the ships. The survivors went next to Aeaea, the island of the witch-goddess Circe. Odysseus sent out a scouting party butCirce turned them into pigs. With the help of an antidote the god Hermes had given him, Odysseus managed to overpower the goddess and forced her to change his men back to human form. When it was time for Odysseus to leave, Circe told him to sail tothe realm of the dead to speak with the spirit of the seer Tiresias. One day’s sailing took them to the land of the Cimmerians. There, he performed sacrifi ces to attract the souls of the dead. Tiresias told him what would happen to him next. He thengot to talk with his mother, Anticleia, and met the spirits of Agamemnon, Achilles, Patroclus, Antilochus, Ajax and others. He then saw the souls of the damned Tityos, Tantalus, and Sisyphus. Odysseus soon found himself mobbed by souls. He becamefrightened, ran back to his ship, and sailed away. While back at Aeaea, Circe told him about the dangers he would have to face on his way back home. She advised him to avoid hearing the song of the Sirens; but if he really felt he had to hear, thenhe should be tied to the mast of the ship, which he did. Odysseus then successfully steered his crew past Charybdis (a violent whirlpool) and Scylla (a multiple-headed monster), but Scylla managed to devour six of his men. Finally, Odysseus and hissurviving crew approached the island where the Sun god kept sacred cattle. Odysseus wanted to sail past, but the crewmen persuaded him to let them rest there. Odysseus passed Circe’s counsel on to his men. Once he had fallen asleep, his men impiouslykilled and ate some of the cattle. When the Sun god found out, he asked Zeus to punish them. Shortly after they set sail from the island, Zeus destroyed the ship and all the men died except for Odysseus. After ten days, Odysseus was washed up on theisland of the nymph Calypso.

Dann sieht er die Seelen der Verdammten Tityos, Tantalos und Sisyphos. Bald wird Odysseus selbst von den Seelen gequält, kehrtvoll Angst zu seinem Schiff zurück und segelt davon. Schließlich erreichen Odysseusund die überlebende Besatzung die Insel, auf der der Sonnengott Helios heiliges Vieh hält. Odysseus will weitersegeln, aber seine Mannschaft überredet ihn zu einer Rast. Odysseus erzählt ihnen von Kirkes Warnung, aber kaum, dass ereingeschlafen ist, töten die Männer in gotteslästerlicher Weise einige Rinder und verspeisen sie. Als Helios dies entdeckt, bittet er Zeus, sie zu bestrafen. Kurz nachdem sie die Segel für die Abreise von der Insel gesetzt haben, zerstört Zeusdas Schiff und alle außer Odysseus sterben. Nach zehn Tagen wird Odysseus an den Strand der Insel der Nymphe Kalypso angespült.
Ulysse, épuisé par la terrible tempête qu’il a subie, échoue sur le rivage des Phéaciens. Reçu au palais du roi Alcinoos, Ulysse entreprend le récit des épreuves passées depuis son départ de Troie. Les survivants sortent ensuite cachés sous le ventre de ses brebis et regagnent leurs bateaux. Faisant preuve d’orgueil, Ulysse crie sa véritable identité au risque de faire sombrer son navire sous une pluie de rochers. Ulysse aborde l’île d’Eolie, au royaume du maître des vents. Eole offre Ulysse un vent favorable pour regagner Ithaque, et une outre renfermant tous les vents contraires. Hélas, la curiosité des marins d’Ulysse aura raison de cet heureux dénouement car, en ouvrant l’outre, les vents contraires s’échappent et déchaînent une nouvelle tempête. Après avoir dérivé plusieurs jours, ils parviennent chez les Lestrygons cannibales qui détruisent l’escadre. Les survivants reprennent la mer avec un unique navire et abordent dans l’île d’Aiaié, séjour de la magicienne Circé. Ulysse envoie des éclaireurs dans les terres. Imprudemment entrés dans la demeure de la magicienne, ils sont transformés en pourceaux. Seul Ulysse échappe au sortilège gr ce l’antidote que lui indique Hermès. Vaincue, Circé s’offre au héros et rend ses compagnons leur forme humaine. Avant de laisser partir Ulysse, Circé lui conseille d’aller au pays des morts consulter l’ombre du devin Tirésias. Après une journée de navigation, le bateau d’Ulysse atteint le pays des Cimmériens. Nel redigere questi appunti di studio, spero di comunicare la mia ‘curiosità’ verso la prassi compositiva di uno tra i più grandi maestri di tutti i tempi: Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Per comprendere (almeno in parte) lo stile bachiano, mi sono basato su alcune strutture armoniche riscontrabili con regolarità in fasi precadenzali. Ho potuto notare come una di queste strutture da me indagate (nello studio definita formula-tipo) venisse ulteriormente elaborata in tutti i suoi parametri musicali fondamentali (melodia, contrappunto, armonia e ritmo) per dare vita a ‘nuovi’ insiemi armonico-contrappuntistici. Tali formule derivate dimostrano come lo stile compositivo bachiano poggi soprattutto su tecniche di tipo artigianale. Ho potuto inoltre ammirare come il Maestro abbia saputo coniugare il contrappunto di origine modale rinascimentale con le proprie (geniali) invenzioni armoniche, basate sul ‘moderno’ funzionalismo tonale (vedi la formula tipo modale). Perciò è mia convinzione che, nello studio sui corali, per caratterizzare lo stile compositivo del Kantor bisogna innanzi tutto identificare i componenti essenziali del suo linguaggio armonico cadenzale (linguaggio ‘moderno’ ma nello stesso tempo derivato dalla tradizione dei maestri del ’500). Individuati gli elementi strutturali peculiari, possiamo riconoscerli, reiterati nei punti ‘chiave’ (cadenze) del discorso musicale tonale; in tal modo, essi concorrono a rendere unitaria ed organica la tipica armonizzazione a quattro voci di una forma musicale così ricca di varianti melodiche come il corale evangelico luterano.
