Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe, where itinerant Jewish troubadours, known as ‘klezmorim’, had performed at celebrations, particularly weddings, since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century, lyrics had been added to klezmer music, due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings), to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre, but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music, particularly featuring the violin and clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used three contrasting traditionaltunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert. The slow movement Sounds has a somewhat dark and sombre atmosphere, with complex harmonies and special sound effects. However, the second movement, Caprice, is energetic, entertaining, virtuosic and somewhat whimsical - quite a contrast indeed with the first! This three-part suite is rich in dances and full of contrasting styles and dynamics. The title of the work is a pun on the term ‘concerto grosso’, a piece in parts for a group of solo instruments and orchestra. In Contrasto Grosso small groups in the band perform as soloists, interpreting contrasting renaissance style fragments. Deze dansrijke suite bestaat uit drie delen die worden gekenmerkt door contrasten in stijl, dynamiek en instrumentatie. This fantastic new work is set to become a classic in the trumpet repertoire. Each of its three contrasting movements can be played alone as shorter pieces or together as a mini concerto. The second movement is particularly interesting in the fact it is a fantasy in theme and variations form, based on a Handel minuet. Aurora Dances was commissioned by the Hong Kong-based Winter Band Festival, and consists of three movements, to be played without a break. ‘Aurora Borealis’ opens with florid woodwind figures and highlights different sections of the band in turn. The second movement ‘Aurora Australis’ leads to a sombre chorale, which builds to a full-band climax. The finale ‘Aurora Dances’ is characterised by rhythmic, dance-like themes. A central section features a contrasting legato melody, but this doesn’t dispel the energetic feel of the opening, which returns to close the work.Aurora Dances werd geschreven in opdracht van het Winter Band Festival in Hongkong. Het werk bestaat uit drie delen die in elkaar overlopen. ‘Aurora Borealis’ opent met sierlijke motieven in het hout en bevat korte, herhaalde frasen waarin de verschillende secties afwisselend in de schijnwerpers worden gezet. Aurora Dances wurde vom Winter Band Festival in Hongkong in Auftrag gegeben und wird ohne Pause gespielt. Aurora Borealis“ beginnt mit überschwänglichen Holzbläserfiguren und hebt abwechselnd verschiedene Sektionen des Blasorchesters hervor. Der zweite Satz, Aurora Australis“, führt zu einem düsteren Choral, der sich zu einem Höhepunkt des kompletten Orchesters aufbaut. Das Finale, Aurora Dances“, zeichnet sich durch rhythmische und tänzerische Themen aus.
