Ravel's multi-layered homage in Breitkopf UrtextIn his homage Le Tombeau de Couperin, Ravel is less specifically interested in Couperin than in French music of the late 18th century. In his preface, editor Jean-Francois Monnard explains how Ravel paid a moving and intensely personal tribute to the events of World War I with his multi-layered work. The orchestral version goes back to the original, eponymous piano suite (1914-17). Then, in 1919, the composer selected four pieces from this source, orchestrated them with all of his grace and artistry; the result provides a charming contrast to the pseudo-Baroque musical idiom, and places the pieces in a new and effective sequence. The work quickly gained great popularity immediately after the concertant world premiere, when the three dance movements of the orchestral suite were included in a ballet production.The underpinnings of Monnard's edition are provided by the most important sources. The preface features a great deal of information on the interpretation and performance history of the work. Bach's chorale cantata with its opening text Wohl dem, der sich auf seinen Gott recht kindlich kann verlassen (Tis well with him who on the Lord trusts just like a child) BWV 139 was performed for the first time on 12 November 1724 in the main Leipzig church service. The cantata text, based on the hymn of the same name by Johann Christoph Rube (1665-1746), is in praise of trust in God. In the opening chorus, full of depth of feeling, the hymn melody is heard throughout; this is followed by a lively tenor aria Gott ist mein Freund (God is my friend) with a musical depiction of the adversary raging in vain, and in the bass aria Das Ungluck schlagt auf allen Seiten (Misfortune assails me on every side) Bach presents both drama and Baroque imagery. One of the two solo violin parts for the tenor aria is lost, so our edition offers a reconstruction. The virtuoso violin part of the bass aria was evidently based on a part for violoncello piccolo, now lost. The edition provides for performance by violin or violoncello. The Christmas story by the Celle-born Baroque composer Arnold Melchior Brunckhorst (d. 1725) follows the account of the Christmas story in St Luke's Gospel. The text is set in full in the composition, with the biblical text enriched in a few arias and choruses by the addition of free poetry. The demands on the musicians are moderate; the scoring is manageable with 2 trumpets, but at the same time it is really festive! When his musical triad op. 192 was created in the winter of 1873/74, Raff was one of Germany's most successful composers and the central artistic authority in the Hessian spa, royal residence and imperial city of Wiesbaden. With op. 192, Raff cultivated his reputation as an erudite composer who was a master of contrapuntal forms. By the time the string quartets were composed, he had already established himself as one of the most prolific and versatile suite composers of the 19th century, as is evident here in the various suite conceptions: Opus 192 No. 1 (in C minor), as Suite in the ancient style, has with Baroque labels stylized dance movements follow one another. Die schone Mullerin [The Fair Maid of the Mill] op. 192 No. 2 (in D major), on the other hand, interprets the suite as a sequence of chapters in a musical narrative and thus becomes probably the first tone poem in string quartet scoring. In the third quartet (in C major), of which Raff the artist was proudest, other genre designations mix in among the dance movements, and with its free succession of different movement types, not usual for a sonata, it preserves structural openness. In collaboration with the Joachim-Raff-Archiv Lachen (CH)Some eighteen years elapsed between Raff's first counted String Quartet op. 77 and his Quartets Nos. 6-8 op. 192, combined as one work. As such, Raff parted with the weighty single opus in quartet composition - without, however, sacrificing musical quality.

George Frederic Handel (1685-1759) is a German composer whose musical legacy has lasted over three hundred years. While most people know his Hallelujah Chorus from the oratorio The Messiah, many of his other compositions are still performed around the world, including La Rejouissance from the Royal Fireworks Suite. The suite was commissioned by King George of England to celebrate the Treaty of Aix-La-Chapel. King George said he wanted only wind and percussion instruments, specifically requesting “no fiddles.†12,000 people attended the dress rehearsal of the concert. In contrast, the actual performance happened in the rain, which meant many of the fireworks did light, but managed to set the immense pavilion on fire. Handel later added strings to the Royal Fireworks Suite for a charity performance for The Foundling Hospital of London.For young students, the character of Handel’s music is defined by the types of bow strokes. Quarter notes should be played with a detached bow stroke with a hint of an accent. Eighth notes may be played more connected but will sound best with a slight detachè stroke. If more advanced students join the performance, a minimized vibrato is typical of music from the Baroque era. Terraced dynamics may be practiced by stopping just before the dynamic change and adjusting the weight of the bow arm, then proceeding in the new dynamic such as in measures 37-39.

The new Breitkopf Urtext edition by Joshua Rifkin draws on all relevant sources to restore the Mass to the state in which Bach left it for posterity. This means, first, a clear separation of the Kyrie and Gloria from the earlier Missa of 1733. Moreover, in the Credo the Symbolum Nicenum Rifkin has faced the challenge of sweeping away the overlay of additions by C.P.E. Bach and eliminating his alterations more thoroughly than Friedrich Smend had in the Neue Bach Ausgabe of 1954 and in later editions as well.The NBA edition of this work has long been thought to be unsatisfactory, so in this case Breitkopf study score is better as well as a few euros cheaper.
