13 specially commissioned pieces which aim to breathe new life into a largely neglected component of the GCSE/Key Stage 4 Music syllabus, Ensemble Performance. On Track comes complete with a CD-Rom containing all the parts for all the pieces and transpositions for any instrument, and these parts come with a licence for printing as many copies as needed, directly from the CD-Rom. A separate 'audio' CD also contains recordings of every piece. The book contains scores for each piece and extended notes by the composers to aid in the preparation of the music: there are 5 pieces for fixed ensembles and 8 pieces for flexible ensembles. The editor of the compilation, Sadie Harrison, comments: Playing in an ensemble with one's peers is perhaps the most rewarding and satisfying thing to do as a young performer, and it is crucial to nurture this element of GCSE courses to reflect this. On Track is a fantastic collection of many different styles, approaches and sounds. There is something in here for everybody, at whatever level, and on whatever instrument. This is what GCSE Music teachers are crying out for, and finally here is something that really hits the mark. Harrison's comments are echoed by recent examiners' reports from EdExcel, one of the largest examiners of GCSE music. They describe how the music they heard in examinations demonstrated 'an extreme range of standards and revealed evidence of the very wide range of instruments in use'. The AQA (Assessment and Qualification Alliance) Examiners' report in 2004 warns schools against allowing their students to present solo music with a piano accompaniment played by a teacher or with a CD accompaniment for the ensemble performance component. It continues, saying that it is of utmost importance that the chosen ensemble allows the candidate to show rapport with the other player(s). This is a significant requirement with which many [examination] centres did NOT comply. Diversions for solo saxophone was written in 2013. According to the dictionary, a diversion is the act or an instance of diverting or turning aside, something that distracts the mind and relaxes or entertains, or a maneuver that draws the attention of an opponent away from a planned point of action. Each of the four movements diverts and distracts, turning in all directions that are unpredictable and unexpected, but are entertaining and amusing all the same.

Written for Rodney Slatford, Bryan Kelly's Diversions reflect both the composer's admiration for the dedicatee, and his insights into the lively character of the instrument - perhaps even more than the viola the 'Cinderella' of the orchestra, and yet capable of great charm and richness of expression. The winning Raggle Taggle Variants at the heart of the collection brilliantly display several sides of the instrument's character, while an Elegy, an Invention, a Polonaise and a Burlesque showcase its solemnity, its seriousness, its lyric eloquence and its humour. Warmly recommended to young players of around Grade 5 standard.

Three Diversions for Soprano (or Tenor) Recorder and Piano by Alan Bullard
Three short 'journeys' that are tuneful and great fun to play. They make an ideal and exciting concert item. Bullard's writing is idiomatic and smooth, and the piano part is well within the grasp of competent amateur pianists.

Questions abound about diversity in music education. How can we engage with diverse populations, repertoire, and identities while upholding integrity and achieving equity? What are cultural appropriation, othering, tokenizing, and essentializing? How can we avoid bias in our teaching and repertoire selection? How do we create a more socially just music education? These are critical questions with accessible answers. But if we are to become better music educators, we must reflect on these questions, our own identities, and our relationships with the music and people of the world. Realizing Diversity by Karen Howard is a groundbreaking and practical resource for crafting diverse and anti-bias music education in classrooms, ensembles, and studios at all levels—from preschool to university and community settings. At the book’s core is an Anti-Bias Framework intended to help music educators gain confidence and comfort in designing music curricula that are just, equitable, and make participants feel safe and welcome. Structured around the four social justice domains of identity, diversity, justice, and action, this framework explores topics of anti-racism, gender and sexual identity, power and privilege, disabilities, economic realities, empathy, and critical consciousness. Dr. Howard also includes discussion of educational movements in United States history, the challenging “world music†label and related authenticity, the hyper-prevalence of Western Eurocentric music, inclusive repertoire selection, as well as appendices with critical practices for educators and a sample curriculum. An indispensable book for pre-service, beginning, and veteran music teachers of toddlers through adults, Realizing Diversity considers the many separate but deeply interrelated questions related to creating a more socially just music education. Karen Howard is a frequent presenter working with teachers and presenting research related to creating a more socially just world of music education. She is Associate Professor of Music at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses related to children’s music, sociology of education, research methods, ethnomusicology, and matters of diversity.

Brand utilizes the flutes as the featured instrument in this lighthearted arrangement of Cherubino's Aria from the Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro. The song, entitle Voi che sapete (Tell me fair ladies), is introduced in the opera as if written by Cherubino himself and is simply a diversion rather than of relevance to the plot. Although initial reaction to The Marriage of Figaro was somewhat lukewarm, it has of course established itself as one of the great comic operas, and this canzona became and 18th century pop song. This 'Canzona' comes from Mozart's comic opera The Marriage of Figaro, first performed in Vienna in 1786. Cherubino is a young page in the household of Count Almaviva, although the role is written for a soprano and usually cast for a singer with 'boyish' looks. Written by noted scholar and conductor Dennis Shrock, Choral Diversity is a presentation of composers throughout history who represent the broad and diverse canon of choral music. Included are twenty women composers and ten composers of color, many of whom have been previously underrepresented in studies and in performances. Each chapter presents overviews of the composer’s life and choral output, information and analysis of selected compositions, including complete texts and literal translations not found elsewhere, and guidelines that address related and important aspects of performance. Importantly, Shrock approaches choral diversity from multiple perspectives. Most notably, the book highlights the music of women composers—such as Hildegard von Bingen, Amy Beach, and Undine Smith Moore—as well as composers of color, including José MaurÃcio Nunes Garcia, William Grant Still, and Margaret Allison Bonds, among others. Rounding out his approach, Shrock also explores the lesser-known works of familiar composers such as Palestrina and Brahms. The book’s repertoire, too, represents a diversity of musical periods, styles, and genres—including chants, madrigals, chansons, motets, partsongs, oratorios, cantatas, and vocal chamber pieces—all of which are intended to be accessible to regular school, church, and community choruses. With its broad scope and scholarly authority, Choral Diversity is the ideal resource for conductors at all levels looking to diversify their concert programming in a practical and historically informed way. Dennis Shrock is author of ten books, three published by Oxford University Press and the remaining seven published by GIA Publications. He has held faculty positions at Boston University, Westminster Choir College, and the University of Oklahoma. He has also served as Artistic Director of the Santa Fe Desert Chorale and was a lecturer and member of the conducting staff at Yale University. Shrock received his master’s and doctoral degrees in choral conducting from Indiana University.

Sextet: In Divers Knottes... for Clarinet, Piano, Percussion, Violin, Viola and Cello. Composed 1998, published 2000. Duration: 16 minutes. This piece has had several working titles, the longest being Asteroceras obtusum (after a coiled fossil found during a summer visit to Lyme Regis), the most cynical, RAE III, and Flying Starts suggested by a colleague during a conversation about the importance of writing music that “takes off”! I decided on a title that conveyed something o the tangled contrapuntal nature of the piece, taken from an extended text by Stephen Hawes (The Historic of Graunde Amoure and la Bell Pucel, 1554) : With Flora paynted and wrought curiously in diversknottes. With many dragons of marveylos likenes Of divers floures made, full craftely By Flora couloured, with colours sundrye . The piece is episodic and is constructed from three principal textures the opening music which introduces the only theme of the piece and which is never heard again in this form, the fast and increasingly hectic music which grows as the thee proliferates into several knotted variations of itself, and the very slow music which occurs twice as stark contrast to the surrounding material. Written last and within sight of the deadline, this music leaves some of the decisions to the players the last gasps of the composer and the gathering energy within the piece! - Sadie Harrison.
