Nino Rota (1911-1979) war ein italienischer Komponist, der hauptsächlich Filmmusik schrieb. The Soldier's Wife is a short and simple piece commissioned by the Singapore Ministry of Education. It was originally intended as a compulsory piece for the 2012 Singapore Youth Festival. Because many school bands in Singapore areincomplete, the composer was specifically asked to create a work that could equally be played by a limited ensemble - which explains various doubled and optional parts. The Soldier’s Wife is een kort en eenvoudig werkje dat is geschreven in opdracht van het Singaporese ministerie van Onderwijs. Het was aanvankelijk bedoeld als verplicht werk voor het Singapore Youth Festival 2012. Omdat veelschoolorkesten in Singapore een onvolledige bezetting hebben, kreeg de componist het nadrukkelijke verzoek om het werk zo vorm te geven dat het ook met een beperkt ensemble uitgevoerd kan worden: dat verklaart een aantal verdubbelingenen instrumenten ad libitum.Een warme, melodische passage opent dit korte werkje: de vrouw van het - houten - soldaatje zingt als het ware een wiegeliedje. Nadat dit lyrische deel is afgerond, volgt een energieker gedeeltedat qua melodisch materiaal op dezelfde bouwstenen is gebaseerd. De hier en daar gesyncopeerde ritmiek verleent dit deel een bijzondere energie, en ook harmonisch zijn er een paar verrassende wendingen - waarbij rekening is gehoudenmet de beperkingen die verbonden zijn aan werken voor dit muzikale niveau. Begon het werkje zacht en liefelijk, aan het slot is er heel wat meer ‘girl power’ voelbaar!Sieh an hier haben wir die Frau des hölzernen Soldaten! Zu Beginn singt sie ein sanftes Wiegenlied, doch dann folgt ein kraftvollerer Abschnitt mit synkopierten Rhythmen und überraschenden harmonischen Wendungen. Ist dieses Werk, das auch vonunvollständig besetzten Blasorchestern gespielt werden kann, zu Beginn noch leise und lieblich, klingt zum Schluss doch schon wesentlich mehr weibliche Energie“ durch...!« Regarde, c’est la femme du soldat de bois » ! Tout d’abord, elle chante une tendre berceuse. Vient ensuite une partie plus puissante, avec des rythmes syncopés et de surprenantes contorsions de la trame harmonique. All’inizio, canta una dolce ninnananna, che precede una sezione più potente dai ritmi sincopati e con sorprendenti cambiamenti di armonie. The Soldier’s Wife inizia in modo calmo e dolce per poi trovare un’energia tipicamente femminile verso il finale. The Soldier’s Wife è un brano breve e semplice, perfetto anche per formazioni a organico ridotto grazie alle parti raddoppiate e opzionali.

As part of the Dolce Suono Ensemble project Mahler 100/Schoenberg 60, Stucky was commissioned for a work reflecting on these two remarkable composers. For Stucky, this was a look back to his beginnings as a composer, and he injects cues from both Mahler and Schoenberg in his completed work. For the text, he chose one of the Ruckert poems that Mahler never did use, but one which has attracted some 60 other composers. The song of lost youth and farewell incorporates a nod to Schoenberg (including the Pierrot ensemble scoring) and Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde at the end.

Named after the leaf displayed on Canada’s flag, Maple Leaf Overture was composed specifically to open a Canadian school’s symphonic band tour of England. A short fanfare during the overture smoothly transitions to a jazzy, syncopated section. The main theme is first played by the horns and saxophones, and then by the entire ensemble. This lively theme then alternates with a slower second theme, building momentum before a brisk coda culminates in a rousing finale!Maple Leaf Overture gaat natuurlijk over het bekendste herkenningsteken van Canada: het blad van de esdoorn, in de vlag. Sparke componeerde dit openingswerk speciaal voor een Canadees schoolorkest uit Calgary, voor hun tour door Groot-Brittannië.Een korte fanfare gaat in deze ouverture naadloos over in een jazzachtig, syncopisch vivo. Il brano apre con una fanfara maestosa che alterna fraseggi affidati alle varie sezioni della banda. Questa successione omogenea in un tempo vivo introduce progressivamente ritmi sincopati in stile jazz. Un tema principale, all’inizio eseguito dai corni e dai sassofoni, sar in seguito ripreso da tutto l’organico. Segue un motivo più dolce che si intercala progressivamente verso un’apoteosi nella qualeviene riproposto il tema principale. Il brano si conclude con un breve richiamo alla fanfara di apertura, seguita da una rapida coda.

Puccini’s Adagetto for small orchestra (without trumpets, trombones, and timpani) was probably written in the early 1880s while the composer was still a student in Milan. A few years later he reused the work’s theme in his opera Edgar, where it appears in Act 3 during Fidelia’s aria “Addio, mio dolce amor†as she laments Edgar's supposed death. This touching piece is now available as a separate edition from Volume II.1 of the Edizione Nazionale delle Opere di Giacomo Puccini (Carus 56.002) with all orchestral parts.
