In 2016, Presser published her successful audition training book, 6 Weeks to Finals, and she is a much sought after coach for audition candidates across the country, as well as a frequent Master Class clinician at major schools including Boston University and Peabody Conservatory.JEFFERY ZOOK has been a member of the Detroit Symphony since1992. His formal musical studies began at Interlochen and continued at University of Michigan and the Royal Academy of Music in London. His teachers have included William Bennett and Trevor Wye. A prize winner in the NFA Young Artists Competition, Mr. Zook made his solo debut with the Detroit Symphony as a senior in high school, and has since performed all the Vivaldi concerti with them. It's often a composer's experience that the idea planted in one piece may also germinate unexpectedly in another, which is how Gaslight Square II, a seven-minute scherzo for piano duet, grew from a brief study of boogie-woogie style in Gaslight Square1 for solo piano. So, in addition to this jazz-derived element that is developed and extended in the more ambitious piece, there's also a set of little canons shared between the players, and a wistful melody heard in the setting of haunting four-part counterpoint. Players of Grades 7 or 8 standard and above will find Gaslight Square II not only hugely enjoyable to play but also a valuable study in duet textures that require their interaction in a variety of characteristic ways. Duo Antithesis premiered Gaslight Square II at the Ruglander Wasserschlosse in Bavaria, Germany in July 2005, and the work has been broadcast on Bavarian Radio.

Captivated by the playing of famed Franz Liszt pupil Eugen d'Albert during the 1883-1884 concert season, Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky (1840-1893) began work on Concert Fantasia. After an arduous composition process, on which the composer himself remarked, I stopped playing around and came up with something... but it still sounded too poor and unoriginal... Tchaikovsky laid aside Concert Fantasia and began sketching out his Third Orchestral Suite. He eventually returned to and finished Concert Fantasia in June of 1884, with the surprising addition of the second movement Contrastes. Originally composed as the first movement of his Third Orchestral Suite but ultimately rejected, Tchaikovsky reservedly added it as a second movement to Concert Fantasia. While recognizing and wishing to use the movement for its own merits, he still harbored doubts and added an alternative solo cadenza to the end of the first movement in case Contrastes was to be omitted. The Russian Musical Society under the direction of Max Erdmannsdörfer premiered the work in 1855. In the two decades after its debut, Concert Fantasia received many performances but disappeared from the repertoire until it underwent a revival in the latter part of the 20th century. ,,Pothos ist fur einen Schlagzeugsolisten, ,,Himeros fur Schlagzeug und Harfe geschrieben. Beide Gestalten der griechischen Mythologie verkorpern Arten der Sehnsucht. Die eine, die Sehnsucht nach etwas, was anderswo ist oder nicht ist, und Himeros, die Sehnsucht nach dem Naheliegenden, dem angeblich Erfullbaren. Gerade in dieser anregenden Duobesetzung kann das Schlagzeug das Zerreissende der Harfe verstarken und das Poetische des Klanges ins Irisieren bringen. Wie mir kurzlich eine Tapisserie im Chateau Cadillac (Bordelais) zeigte - der durchs Fenster entfliehende Amor wird von einer Person verzweifelt am Fuss festgehalten: Die Sehnsucht, in welcher Gestalt auch immer, ist nicht einfach da. Sie muss errungen werden, ist extrem fluchtig. Meine harmonischen Sehnsuchte gehoren schon seit langerer Zeit der Nichtlokalitat und der Wahrscheinlichkeitsfunktion von Tonen als auftauchende, die trotz klarer punktformiger Jetztzeit den gesamten Stuckraum besetzen und gleichzeitig unscharfe (harmonische) Objekte sind. Verschrankte Photonen kennen keine Zeit, keine Gravitation, ihre Wechselwirkung geschieht sofort, instantan. Ist es dann nicht gleichgultig, wie gross deren Entfernung ist? Versucht man dieses Unverstandliche der Mikrowelt fur die Sinne spannend zu machen, gerat das unmittelbar Nebeneinanderstehende zur grossen absurden Entfernung und umgekehrt faltet sich diese zusammen. Das ist nicht mehr das ,,Problem Einheit wie bei Webern oder Nono, sondern ein neuer Zustand der Uberlagerung. Ich empfinde dabei immer in die Einheit des Tons, der Harmonik, des positionsneutralen Feldes usw. die Uberlagerungen der harmonischen Reichweiten und Entfernungen hinein, Verschrankungen als totale Unruhe. Bis zu einem gewissen Grad steht die Stimmstruktur der Harfe dem entgegen. Die Moglichkeit, immer nur 7-Saiten-Konstellationen zu bekommen und die Pedale mit ihrer Halb- und Ganzton-Beweglichkeit bilden immer wieder Mulden, denen zu entkommen fur die langen Reichweiten einzelner Tone nicht einfach ist. Fast zwangsweise kam ich zu einer Annaherung an Claude Debussys Prelude ,,... Ondine, einer anderen Sehnsuchtsfigur. Und so gibt es an dieses Stuck - eines der genialsten harmonischen Entwurfe des 20. Jahrhunderts - eine Schlusshommage: Zwei der grundlegenden Materialskalen, phrygisch und im spiegelbildlichen lydisch bilden dort die Schlusspartie, hier die der Harfe. Debussy schrieb auch das Prelude ,,Ce qu'a vu le vent d'ouest. Zephir, der aus dem Todesreich kommende, wilde Westwind galt als Vater der drei Sehnsuchtsgestalten der griechischen Antike. Und wer die Westkuste Frankreichs kennt, versteht diesen Wind. Sie merken schon, die Harfenistin, mit der ich fur dieses Stuck probte, ist Franzosin. Der Schlagzeuger verlockte mich mit seinen wunderbaren Triangeln zu diesem Stuck: ,,Himeros! (Nicolaus A. Huber).

Ce sextuor prend la forme d'un double trio a vent et a cordes. Il permet aussi l'utilisation d'un triple duo, ou cette fois ci, un vent est associe a une corde, d'ou le titre de la piece. Afin de permettre cela, j'ai choisi de placer les instrumentistes dans un dispositif scenique en quinconce. Une recherche sonore importante a ete necessaire au prealable de la periode d'ecriture proprement dite. L'utilisation de nombreuses techniques de jeu non conventionnelles cree ainsi un rapport quasi primitif entre le musicien et son instrument. Par la preparation du trio a corde, j'ai transforme de maniere naturelle le son acoustique. Cette modification confere aux instruments des sonorites electroniques parfois distordues. La volonte premiere de cette transformation etait de donner au sextuor, par l'alliage des timbres instrumentaux, l'apparence d'une seule entite et d'un instrument unique. Avec devenu singulier. Anger Management is a study in aggression and heartbreak, rejecting Tennyson's maxim Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all. My goal was to combine the narrative of romantic loss - with its elements of anger, nostalgia, despair and ultimately defiance - with a strict compositional technique and economy of material. The piece is based on two motives: the gruff, ascending three notes of the first bar and a descending half-step sigh, which is eventually transformed and intensified into an ascending major seventh.

In this composition Barbara Heller uses the song Lalai created in Tehran in 1973. It is a song of resistance against the Shah regime and is about a mother who sings a lullaby to her child and tells the story of its father. Based on this song, Barbara Heller composed the duo 'Lalai, Schlaflied zum Wachwerden?' for violin (violoncello) and piano in 1989 - in memory of 50 Iranian women who were murdered under the regime of Khomeini. 'Lalai' is now available in a version for 4 bassoons for the first time. The composer has arranged the simple charming folk tune and the desperate cries for help for bassoon ensemble with a fine sense of detail. The sonorous sound of the bassoons gives the work its very own sound atmosphere. An impressive work of emotional depth.
