Earthrise is the name of an iconic NASA photograph, taken on December 24, 1968 from the Apollo 8 spacecraft while orbiting the Moon. Composer Steven Pyter depicts this historical event with the evocative tone poem for developing bands. A flute solo (cued in other instruments if needed) floats above rich sonorities. The flute's melody is passed around the band and eventually is accompanied by sparkling aleatoric woodwinds. The Apollo 8 spacecraft crests the moon's horizon and planet Earth is visible in the vastness of space. Earthrise is correlated with Tradition of Excellence Book 2, page 34.
About Tradition of Excellence: Excellence in Performance
Excellence in performance is a concert band repertoire series correlated with the Tradition of Excellence Comprehensive Band Method by Bruce Pearson and Ryan Nowlin. The compositions in the series correlate to a specific page in Tradition of Excellence Books 1, 2, or 3 and reinforce and expand on skills and concepts introduced in the method./Selections include exciting parts for every player, grade-appropriate cross-cueing, accessible ranges and rhythms, creative percussion writing, electric bass and rehearsal piano parts, and full conductor scores with rehearsal suggestions, program notes and composer biographies. In addition, the Grade 1 works provide an Advanced Snare Drum part for percussionists who have achieved a higher level of ability, playable simultaneously with the more basic Snare Drum part to facilitate differentiated learning.

This piece was commissioned by Oyama City Symphonic Wind Orchestra to commemorate their 30th Anniversary. The composer was inspired by Oyama City’s slogan, ‘water, green and earth’, to write this festive fanfare. Following a gentle opening a fanfare leads to a magnifi cent chorale. This turns into a quickly moving energetic section with irregular rhythm. This is a short but dramatic piece that will make a brilliant concert opener.

Moving Heaven and Earth was commissioned by the Clark County School District Commissioning Project, Las Vegas, NV, USA and is dedicated to Bunny Wasserman and her Make Music Matter, Las Vegas foundation, in appreciation of her tireless work in support of music education. It was premiered in January 2012, conducted by Col. John R. Bourgeois. The piece consists of a theme and 4 variations; although the theme is original it contains a phrase heavily influenced by a 14-bar passage from the Libera Me in Fauré’s Requiem. It is a sequence that the composer finds harmonically compelling and, although it is never quoted directly, it appears in altered form in thetheme and each of the variations. In the original, the passage is set to the words: Quando cæli movendi sunt et terra (When the heavens and the earth shall be moved) which gave inspiration for the title. After the initial statement of the theme, Variation 1 features the upper woodwinds who play a stirring melody and accompany the Fauré reference with florid arpeggios. Variation 2 spotlights the saxophones and lower woodwind in a rhythmic, modal waltz, whilst Variation 3 is a broad chorale for the brass and percussion. Variation 4 starts with a fugue, which introduces each section of the band in turn before the original theme appears on the brass while the woodwind continue the fugal figuration. Moving Heaven and Earth wurde vom Schulbezirksverband in Las Vegas, Nevada (USA) in Auftrag gegeben.

The composer writes about his work: My piece entitled Embroidery patterns on the cracked surface of the Earth can be imagined somehow as follows: two clarinets and a bassoon write beautifully ornamented magic formulas in the clay. As they proceed, the surface cracks into pieces. They almost finish the writing , but an invisible hand keeps rearranging the innumerable component elements. The rearrangement creates time hiatuses, or heaps together units of information in masses of unexpected density (in the second part, brief but condensed suddenly-emerging patterns of differing density scratch the surface of the long periods of silence) elsewhere it collides with the netof sound that carries the material and thus huge faults, ruptured tectonic plates, come into being The complete work was first performed by the Trio Lignum (Csaba Klenyán, Lajos Rozmán, György Lakatos) in Budapest in 2005.

The driving rhythms and lush harmonies of funk music is a perfect vehicle for the tight, dynamic playing of a solid wind orchestra. The brass sections of Tower of Power and Earth, Wind and Fire inspired players from the 1980's onwards and being part of this type of rhythmic force is a great experience. This piece is designed to be rewarding for all the performers and of course the most important group - the audience.

This piece was commissioned by Japan Ground Self Defense Force Western Army Band. In the programme note for the premiere the composer wrote: I am always impressed by the expansive earth and sparkling ocean scenery when I come to Kyushu. I have met many local people here and they are all expressive and energetic. I wrote this dramatic piece to convey to the whole of Japan the memory of my experience here, swaying in the west wind. I wrote this, hoping that the Self Defense Force will forge closer ties with the community through this piece. Eastern drama felt in the west wind! Swaying in the West Wind revele une profondeur d'expression poignante.
