Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) was a pianist and composer of international stature and one of the towering figures of early 20th century music. He left behind an ouvre consisting of some 170 works, many of which await discovery or are known only in forms far removed from the composer's intentions. Sergei Rachmaninoff : Critical Edition of the Complete Works (RCW), a project issued by Russian Music Publishing, is the first complete edition of Rachmaninoff 's music prepared in accordance with scholarly criteria while meeting the demands of performers. It catalogues, explores, and annotates every available musical, literary, and iconographic source on Rachmaninoff 's music. The RCW is published under the scholarly auspices of Dr. Valentin Antipov. The editorial standards of the RCW satisfy the most discerning criteria and are safeguarded by an Editorial Board of internationally acknowledged authorities in Rachmaninoff scholarship. Alexandre Rachmaninoff (1933-2012), the composer's grandson, has been retained as a special advisor. The RCW is furthermore realized in close cooperation with the Glinka State Central Museum of Musical Culture, which houses one of the most extensive collections of Rachmaninoff autographs worldwide. All sources are consulted for the first time and all compositions are presented in their authentic form with all existing versions from the composer.

Concurrently writing his five violin concertos, the composer chose to feature a solo violin in three of the movements. While it retains a seven-part structure, an impromptu violin concerto is cleverly couched within the work. As he did with most of his serenades for orchestra, Mozart crafted a symphony using the other four movements. Instrumentation: 2.2.0.1: 2.2.0.0: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Violin in set. The Serenade is self explanatory, the Romp just a joyful piece. It is a struggle between classical music and jazz. The clarinet starts quite seriously, but as the piece continues, he tends more and more towards jazz. However the strings (piano) to start with seem to follow him, but at the end go their own (classical) way.

This delightful Serenade in D (K. 100/62a) was completed in 1769, when Mozart was a mere 13 years of age (and this is an ideal fact to share with students)! The first movement, even though composed at such a young age, provides challenges for every musician in the ensemble and is musically appealing to players and audience. This would be an outstanding addition at any point in a program but works particularly well as a concert closer!

The Serenade KV 203 was written 1774 probably as a so called Finalmusik for the end of termat Salzburg University ansd was later dedicated to Archbishop Colloredo for his name day. The present Arrangement for solo violin, 2 violins and Cello is an ideal introduction to Mozart's Music for Young string Players. The work can as well be played with soloists as with an orchestra; the 2nd part is also printed for viola.
