Engravings was composed for the Ensemble Modern as part of the 2013 International Ensemble Modern Academy and it is dedicated in admiration to this iconic group of soloists. Whilst many art forms largely depend on space, music has a thrilling relationship with time. Time serves as a canvas for composers, and compositions can in many ways also be described as sculpted time. Ancient Greeks had two words for time, - Chronos (time in the traditional sense) and - Kairos (the opportune moment). The former is quantitative and the latter, qualitative. This distinction is very important as we live our lives in chronos but experience most of the important events of our lives in kairos. For me, the art of music composition highlights this relationship; whereas music cannot exist without chronos, it is the kairos that makes it worthwhile—the pursuit of supreme moments. As an art form, engraving is very lengthy and painstakingly process-driven, not unlike composing, and techniques, instruments and types of engraving directly inspired this three-movement composition. At times, the inspiration lies in the engraved artefact itself. At others, I am interested in the technical process or the instruments utilized. Methods of production depend on the materials used: Chalcography, xylography and lithography are engravings on copper, wood and stone, respectively, and these are represented both literally and conceptually by the ensemble, either in colour or scope. Pantograph is an engraving machine based on parallelograms where the movement of one point in tracing an image is produced identically in other points, and etching refers to the method of making prints from a metal plate. Whilst beauty is found in the finished engraving, there are also moments of beauty in the process of creation itself. Therefore, Engravings uses this art form to explore both the uniqueness of these concepts but also how they merge during the creative process. Engravings has been composed with the intention of becoming an evening length piece in the future. Therefore, the composition at this time, point and format can also serve as a consummation for the envisaged sound world, gesture, scope and vision.

Ferdinand Leeke.
Ferdinand Leeke (1859-1923) was the creator of a serial of paintings showing scenes from the operas of Richard Wagner.These images provide much more than a simple illustration of Wagner's music dramas. Like no other artist Leeke managed to create the exact atmosphere that Wagner had established by his compositions.The works by Leeke are exhibited in several well-established art-museums, as for example the Neue Pinakothek in Munich and the Richard Wagner Museum in Bayreuth.In 1899 the prominent Bavarian printer Franz Hanfstaengl made copper plates from the original pictures. In a highly complicated procedure Franz Hanfstaengl produced the printing plates to transform Leeke's images into photogravures.These photogravures printed from the original plates are assorted in an exclusive folder that is produced only in a limited edition of 970 pieces worldwide.Every handpulled picture an originalThe art of etching and handcopper prints is regarded as one of the oldest and finestprinting techniques.In case of etching the motif is etched by the artist directly into the copperplate, with heliogravure the image has been engraved by using a complicated and extremly difficult photographic and handicraft procedure.Printing is done on heavy handmade-paper. Today, as 500 years ago, the copperplate is still carefully re-inked by hand and then cleaned with wide-meshed gauze balls, for only when the ink lies deep in the impressions the print will possess the velvety tones and fragile lines so characteristic of old, valuable engravings.The print is produced by pressing the plate under the pressroller with a pressure of around 16 tons. For every single print the entire procedure has to be repeated.To a greater extent than with wooden engravings, the artistic quality of etchings and copper engravings / heliogravures is dependent on the handicraft skills and the aesthetic sensitivity of the printer.This special way of printing has been done by Hanfstaengl publishers since 1833. Through the precise application and remova! of ink, the carefully-considered choice of paper and the use of the hand press, the printing specialists create a precious original with every page.

A unique view of Llobet, as a champion and arranger of Sor. The Sor studies reproduced in facsimile are from Llobet's own library. In an interview in Barcelona in 1929, which is reproduced in full in this edition, Llobet announced his intention of preparing a new edition of the Sor studies. Judging by the density of his marking and copious added and altered fingering in this facsimile edition, he seemed in fact to be doing just this. Unfortunately, a new edition edited by him never came to fruition! We have prepared our facsimile edition of these later printings of Simrock editions (a gift from Erwin Schwarz-Reiflingen in 1928), carefully restoring the originals to make these pages clearer, so that not only is everything more legible, but most importantly, all of Llobet´s fingerings and amendments are clearly legible. In this volume dedicated to Sor, we have re-engraved for inclusion here all 6 of Llobet's very fine Sor transcriptions from La Guitarra in Argentina, fingered and arranged by Llobet.

About Suzuki Method
The Suzuki Method is based on the principle that all children possess ability and that this ability can be developed and enhanced through a nurturing environment. All children learn to speak their own language with relative ease and if the same natural learning process is applied in teaching other skills, these can be acquired as successfully. Suzuki referred to the process as the Mother Tongue Method and to the whole system of pedagogy as Talent Education.
