The Bohemian composer Jan Dismas Zelenka was a double bass player and church music composer at the Saxon court of the Elector August the Strong and his son Friedrich August II. In the years after 1721 he composed an extensive repertoire of Catholic church music together with the Kapellmeister Johann David Heinichen. These works, together with the Dresden operas composed by Johann Adolf Hasse in quick succession from 1731 onwards, established the reputation of the Saxon court as one of the most important musical centers of the late Baroque period. Zelenka composed this psalm setting De profundis in D minor ZWV 97 in 1724 on the death of his father, including a concluding Requiem verse. This was later replaced by the lesser doxology so that the work can be performed in the office of Christmas week. Both endings are included in this new edition. Three trombones, used as an independent instrumental group, give the work a special tonal color. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4006400.

Most of us involved with church music know Richard Proulx as one of the true leaders in our field, the composer of more than 300 works for organ, chorus, solo voice, orchestra...even two operas. This recording was created to help Richard through a difficult time. The story... In September of 1996, Richard Proulx experienced major heart problems that required quadruple bypass surgery. Complications following surgery resulted in a grueling four-month-long stay in the hospital. Thankfully, Richard was slowly getting back to work, looking relaxed and healthier, facing the future confidently but with some concerns. Richard faced a considerable hospital and medical bill--about $350,000--because he had been uninsured since leaving Holy Name Cathedral and did not yet qualify for Medicare. This is the part of the story where his friends come in. A few fellow musicians organized the New Life Foundation: Friends of Richard Proulx to raise the funds necessary to significantly reduce or eliminate Richard's debt. This recording was part of that effort. The Recording... Recorded with the help of The Cathedral Singers and other friends who voluntarily gave of their time and incredible talent, all proceeds GIA collects will directly benefit the New Life Foundation.Spirit of God Unleashed is a magnificent recording featuring a cross-section of Richard's work over the past several decades. Included is a set of extensive liner notes in which Richard discusses the origins of every song. This is a major retrospective recording, featuring music from a variety of publishers, created for a very good cause.

Modest Mussorgsky's 'Boris Godunov', based on Pushkin's eponymous Demetrius drama, is one of the operas raising the question about their definitive version. After the 'first Boris' was rejected in 1868-69, the work was revised into the 'original Boris' with the help of Mussorgsky's friend Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov, which is the version on which the present book is based.Apart from the libretto, this edition contains introductory commentaries of Kurt Pahlen who also adds information on the compositional structure and context to the musical as well as external and internal dramatic action of the opera. A synopsis and a brief outline of the genesis bring the work into relation with the composer's entire oeuvre and life, thus offering a comprehensive, richly illustrated introduction.

Edited by the Deutscher Musikrat (German Music Council) with Richard Mailander and Kord MichaelisCatholic and Protestant churches are familiar with the tradition that in times of crisis, new works are composed to comfort the faithful, and are performed in worship. Following in this tradition, the project Orgelmusik in Zeiten von Corona (Organ Music in Times of Corona) was devised. 17 new compositions were commissioned which reflect Corona times, creatively confront the past and the present, and will enrich the repertoire of organ music in a lasting way.The 17 compositions depict a wide range of styles including avant-garde, jazz and classical, and some refer to music from previous eras and church music traditions. They are conceived for different levels of difficulty, are for 2 or 3-manual organs, and last between four and ten minutes. They are particularly suitable for concerts, but can also be played in church services.* 17 thematic reflections on the Corona pandemic: on the horsemen of the apocalypse, the Coeur bleu, the thunder of time, timelines, trust and confidence, and many more* compositions by Timo Bocking, Kathrin A. Barenreiter's publication of a new volume of theWorks of Gioachino Rossini, in collaboration with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at the University of Chicago, makes available an edition of the operaIl barbiere di Sivigliawhich meets modern demands. The editors have recently identified numerous carelessly edited places in the last critical edition by referring to additional sources. The greatest changes relate to the overture; for the new edition, no fewer than twenty different autograph manuscripts have been consulted. A detailed appendix containing alternative vocal parts, advice on ornamentation and compositions by Rossini significant in the performance history of the opera complete the volume. A 420-page Critical Commentary is published separately. With this, a critical edition is now available to interpreters, enabling them to perform Rossini's ,,Barber of Sevillewith the greatest possible confidence in the accuracy of the musical material. The performance material is available on hire, and a vocal score will be published at the end of 2009. Through 1829 Rossini was an extraordinarily prolific composer of operas, comic, serious, and semiserious, in Italian and French, as well as of a great deal of vocal and instrumental music. He composed sacred music, vocal treatises, cantatas. Then, for many different reasons, he wrote very little music for more than twentyfive years, if we except some songs and the ' Stabat Mater' . Only after he left Italy definitively for Paris in 1855 did he find his voice again. Between 1857 and 1868 a fresh group of masterpieces issued from his pen, the so-called ' Peches de vieillesse' (Sins of Old Age), including chamber music, songs, and the 'Petite Messe Solennelle'. Philip Gossett, General Editor of Works of Gioachino Rossini, is the Robert W. Reneker Distinguished Service Professor at The University of Chicago and a professordi chiara famaat the University of RomeLa Sapienza. He is also general editor of The Works of Giuseppe Verdi. Barenreiter in cooperation with the Center for Italian Opera Studies at The University of Chicago will publish ten volumes in the series Works of Gioachino Rossini, in critical editions, during the period 2007-2011. These are all volumes that were not issued in theEdizione critica delle opere di Gioachino Rossini.
