Brass Band (Score) - Grade 4 SKU: HL.4007972 For Brass Band. Composed by Otto M. Schwarz. Concert. Duration 857 seconds. Hal Leonard #SDP068.21-201. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.4007972). Stories, sagas and legends--who among us doesn't know them? Always delivered with a tinge of brutality, these cautionary tales are a legacy of moral education from times past: inquisitive children alone in the forest are generally eaten by a witch; the Soup-Kasper of Hoffmann's Struwwelpeter dies from starvation rather than eating his soup; anyone letting in strangers usually gets devoured; anyone who plays with matches gets burned; and thumb-suckers get their thumbs cut off. The list of unfortunate demises is almost endless. In the tale of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, parents lose their children through greed, ridicule, scorn and a failure to appreciate art. There is still a street in the town of Hamelin in which neither drumming nor playing has not been allowed since 130 children disappeared into a mountain, never to be seen again. This composition by Otto M. Schwarz opens with exactly this scene, taking us back to the year 1284. As in many towns at the time, Hamelin in Germany suffered with hygiene problems--rats and mice began to multiply rapidly, and the town was overrun with the plague. There appeared a man dressed in colorful clothes who promised the locals to free them from this burden. They agreed and settled on a fee. Then the man pulled out a pipe and began to play. When the rats and mice heard this, they followed him. He led the animals into the Weser River, where they all drowned. Back in town, the people refused to pay him. They didn't recognize this man's skills and knowledge and were only prepared to pay for simple labour. A pact with the devil was made, which led to the Pied Piper leaving the town in a furious rage. One Sunday, when many people were at church, he returned, took out his flute and began to play. The town's children were so enchanted by his playing that they followed him. He led them out of the town and disappeared with them forever into a mountain. Of all the children, only two survived--however one was mute, and one was blind. In the street from which the children left Hamelin, music may no longer be played in memory of this event. $27.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

(Libretto) SKU: HL.49041671 Einfuhrung und Kommentar. Composed by Georges Bizet. Edited by Kurt Pahlen. This edition: Paperback/Soft Cover. Paperback. Serie Musik. Text book/libretto. Composed 1873-1875. 351 pages. Duration 180'. Schott Music #SEM 8002. Published by Schott Music (HL.49041671). ISBN 9783254080028. French - German. Based on the subject of the eponymous novella by Prosper Merimee, 'Carmen' is George Bizet's last work. The composer died a few weeks after the unsuccessful world premiere in Paris on 3 March 1875. To the opera-lover of today, it is inconceivable that this work with its numerous wonderful 'Spanish' melodies and rhythms - developed by Bizet virtually 'from afar' as he had never travelled through Spain - could ever be a failure. Over the course of time, however, 'Carmen' has become one of the most popular and most frequently played operas long since.Apart from the libretto, this edition contains introductory commentaries of Kurt Pahlen who also adds information on the compositional structure and context to the musical as well as external and internal dramatic action of the opera. A short synopsis and a brief outline of the genesis bring the work into relation with the composer's entire oeuvre and life, thus offering a comprehensive, richly illustrated introduction. $17.99 - See more - Buy online

Part. 8 pages. Duration 43'. Breitkopf and Haertel #OB 3210-27. Published by Breitkopf and Haertel (BR.OB-3210-27). ISBN 9790004300732. 10 x 12.5 inches. Johannes Brahms' first Piano Concerto was the fruit of a complex, protracted, and extremely trying creative process. Its origin goes back to a sonata in D minor for two pianos conceived in spring 1854. The impulse for the creation of the main subject was however a shocking event: According to Joseqph Joachim, the theme originated after hearing about Schumanns suicide attempt. A few months earlier, Schumann had revealed Brahms to the musical world in his essay New Paths. In this article, Brahms is extolled as the musician who is called to give expression to the feeling of his times in an ideal fashion. The unusually rapid genesis of the D-minor sonata and its prevailingly dark, monumental mood can be interpreted as an impassioned compositional response to Schumann's suicide attempt. However, the year-long struggle to arrive at the final form of the work should perhaps also be seen in the context of the resounding praise of Schumann's prophetic article. Brahms undoubtly felt a growing inner pressure to live up to the expectations aroused therein.Together with Clara Schumann, Brahms played the three so far existing movements of the sonata, but he was very self-critical. He felt that he had not been able to realize the monumentality he had envisioned, and which Clara Schumann felt, by merely doubling the piano sound. He soon decided to transform the sonata into a symphony (his first orchestral project). However, this idea did not seem to fit his vision either. Only in spring 1855 did he strike upon the definitive solution: a piano concerto. With Brahms as soloist, this concerto premiered in 1859, though he initially had little success. He wrote to Joachim about one of the first performances that the concerto was a brilliant and unmistakable - failure. This hardly surprised Brahms, for he was undoubtedly aware of the newness of the work, which surpassed the expectations of the audience. The work's complex structure and symphonic dimensions, the solo part's rejection of showy, elegant brilliance, and the uniquely Brahmsian orchestral density it maintains throughout; all of these qualities inevitably exasperated audiences at first - until they raised this work to the ranks of the most celebrated concertos of all time. $7.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

Score and Parts Concert Band (Score and Parts) - Grade 3 SKU: HL.4008730 Concert Band, Grade 3 3:50 Score and parts. Composed by Peter Knockaert. Symphonic Dimensions. Concert Band. Softcover. Duration 230 seconds. Hal Leonard #SDP2392302. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.4008730). ISBN 9798350119473. UPC: 196288195238. The last decades we humans have witnessed a significant number of disturbing developments. If we look at the direct and persistent destructive influence of humans on nature: air and water quality are reducing, soils are depleting, crops are short of pollinators, coasts are less protected from storms, deforestation, the degradation of land, loss of biodiversity and pollution. In stark contrast we find the intelligence and boundless creativity of humans: what about all the high technological advancements? What lies ahead in the realm of Artificial Intelligence? Will we let machines make human decisions? What ethical issues arise there? This composition reflects the desperation and urgency of the human need for action. The music draws inspiration from the brutal natural forces that ravage our world as a direct consequence of human failure and selfishness. Are we heading towards a 'Judgment Day'? Or will humanity find a way to reverse negative trends towards a more livable, peaceful, and joyful environment for humans, animals, and nature? To underscore this message, composer Peter Knockaert opted for a highly classical idiom that has been used by many composers in classical music: the 'Dies Irae'. Traditionally, the Dies Irae is the third part of a requiem (funeral mass). The text used in 'Judgment DayÂ? (for optional choir) is coming from the original Latin text. Published by Gerard Billaudot Editeur (PR.510076960). 1. Choral: An improbably superimposing of Beethoven and Brahms. At the end of the first performance of the latter's 1st Symphony, someone asked the composer: Don't you find that your main theme remin ds one of the Ode to Joy? To which he retorted: Even an idiot would have noticed it! 2. Fugue: in the last exposition, the subject of Fugue I from volume 1 of Bach's Well-Tempered Keyboard is super imposed on the theme from Mozart's so-called easy sonata. 3. Passion: In his Violin Concerto, Mendelssohn, to whom we owe the rediscovery of Bach's Passions, seems to have borrowed a theme from a lost Passion. 4. Recitativo: Tribute to Franck's tribute to Bach in his Sonata for violin and piano. 5. Invention: A private revenge, after a bitter failure. Debussy's Toccata was on the compulsory list for the Conservatory piano class entrance exam. 6. Arpeggione: In which the listener realizes the similarity in the introduction to Schubert's Unfinished Symphony and Arpeggione Sonata. 7. Sarabande: The most iconoclastic, for Bach's 5th Cello Suite is already suffused with harmony. There might be an evocatioin of a Brahms-like overarching structure, though... 8. Variation: The slowest variation ever written on Paganini's 24th Caprice. 9. Scene: Schumann's Reverie as a Prelude. 10. Finale: In order to capture the elusive harmony of the Finale of Chopin's Sonate Funebre. 11. Fugue on Au clair de la lune: Our greatest nursery rhymes, fugue fitted and choralized. 12. Fugue de Noel (Christmas fugue): Quite appropriate. 13. Fugue on J'ai du bon tabac: Prohibited counterpoint. 14. Fugue on La Marseillaise: Franco-German reconciliation. 15. Among the works by Vivaldi preserved in a state unsatisfactory for performance there is a curious case. It is this motet written for“Alto Solo”, Invicti bellate, RV 628, which is already known to the public through editions, performances and recordings united by acommon shortcoming: a failure to realize that four entire pages of manuscript, amounting to something like 110-120 bars of music, are missing. This situation demands a definitive clarification: the motet is not performable in the state in which it has come down to us. Standing apart from a recent, over-indulgent fashion tending towards the reconstruction of damaged works at all costs, this edition deliberately presents the text in its imperfect state, with the provision, however, of a substantial historical introductionaimed particularly at establishing the motet's date and its position within the ample repertory of Vivaldi's sacred music. $22.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

German. 1873 was a critical year in the life of Richard Wagner. Expectations were high when construction began on the theater. And now, even though the ambitious festival enterprise was threatened with failure, Wagner single-mindedly drove his collaborators and fund raisers on, mercilessly. Most of the approx. 320 ascertainable letters edited by Angela Steinsiek testify to his attempts to raise funds: through increased concert activity, selective publications, even through the convocation of an assembly of patrons. Other adversities he faced are found in the numerous letters from publishers which document the publication of the Rheingold score; the completion of Wagner's first book of collected writings; and the hindrances constantly preventing him from orchestrating Gotterdammerung, which kept stalling because of everyday chores. Moreover, a series of letters also clearly illustrates the process of the construction of Haus Wahnfried, whose luxurious interior decoration had to be dropped for lack of funds.

Concert Band; Concert Band Set (Score) - Grade 4 SKU: HL.4007945 For Concert Band, Grade 4, 14:17 Score. Composed by Otto M. Schwarz. Concert. Softcover. Duration 857 seconds. Hal Leonard #SDP041.21-01. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.4007945). Stories, sagas and legends--who among us doesn't know them? Always delivered with a tinge of brutality, these cautionary tales are a legacy of moral education from times past: inquisitive children alone in the forest are generally eaten by a witch; the “Soup-Kasper†of Hoffmann's Struwwelpeter dies from starvation rather than eating his soup; anyone letting in strangers usually gets devoured; anyone who plays with matches gets burned; and thumb-suckers get their thumbs cut off. $38.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Schott Music #SEM 8013. Published by Schott Music (HL.49012027). ISBN 9783254080134. 4.75x7.5x0.636 inches. Italian - German. Puccini had hardly finished his work on 'Tosca' in 1900 and seen its first performances when a new potential opera subject attracted his attention during a theatre visit in London: the play staged was 'Madame Butterfly. Tragedy of a Japanese Woman'. At the beginning of 1904, the musical setting of this subject matter was completed - the work was a failure at the world premiere. Thereupon, Puccini revised it into a three-act version, and it was in this form that the opera about the unhappy Japanese woman began its triumphant progress.Apart from the Italian libretto and the common German translation, this edition contains introductory commentaries of Kurt Pahlen who also adds information on the compositional structure and context to the musical as well as external and internal dramatic action of the opera. A short synopsis and a brief outline of the genesis bring the work into relation with the composer's entire oeuvre and life, thus offering a comprehensive, richly illustrated introduction. $20.99 - See more - Buy online

Piano Duet SKU: HL.14023265 Composed by Hanne Mulvad. Music Sales America. Tuition. Choral Score. Composed 2005. 32 pages. Edition Wilhelm Hansen #WH30488. Published by Edition Wilhelm Hansen (HL.14023265). ISBN 9788759810866. Danish. From the preface: The aim of the publication of these four-handed piano compositions is to fill a void within the sphere of sight-reading (and almost sight-reading) at the beginner and intermediate level. These three volumes together contain 36 Nordic folk songs from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland and the Faroe Islands. The selection is based first and foremost on their being well suited to the instrumental expressive possibilities of the piano, and being good representatives of the rich and atmospheric Nordic musical heritage. When one practises sight-reading on one’s own it is tempting to stop as onegoes along, because the desire to play the correct notes is often given priority at the expense of the rhythm and expression. Music without an organic pulse will leave the player with an unsatisfactory feeling of stress and failure, and the stream of thought will not form part of a natural flow. Good sight-reading training is therefore ensemble playing, where the teacher supports the pulse and rhythm. In many other publications of four-handed duets the secundo part is written in two bass clefs, and the primo part in two treble clefs. Reading this untrained combination of clefs, along with the stressful fact that the music has never been seen nor heard before, can confuse the pupil. In volumes 1 and 2 the secundo part, which is intended for the pupil, is therefore notated in a treble clef and bass clef, as piano music for two hands is usually notated. In volume 3 the degree of difficulty is more varied, but in most of the pieces improvisation is an interposed element in the primo part, being therefore a good challenge for the pupil. In the improvisatory sections a chord or a scale is notated. These can form the tonal starting point, but here too the pupil is encouraged to experiment with, for example, the shift between major and minor thirds, and between the high and low sixth and seventh. $24.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Francesca da Rimini is a drama for music in two acts by Saverio Mercadante, libretto by Felice Romani; the text is freely inspired by the unfortunate events of the two lovers, Francesca and Paolo, of which Dante's Comedy (canto V) also narrates. According to some scholars, the first performance of Francesca da Rimini took place in Madrid in January 1828; however, this date is not reflected in the Diario de Avisos de Madrid, a publication that daily reserved a conspicuous space for news on the shows staged in the Spanish city: the years between 1828 and 1831 in fact do not mention the work. Furthermore, no printed libretto of Mercadante's Francesca da Rimini is preserved today – an inexplicable fact, if one admits that the performance took place. The text of the opera can be largely traced back to the one prepared by Romani for the homonymous work by Antonio Carlini (Naples 1825), which Mercadante was able to know before his stay in Spain. Following the missed Spanish premiere, the opera should then have been represented at La Scala Theater in a subsequent season, with reliability the imminent one of the 1831/32 carnival; but shortly thereafter the impresario died: thus the contractual obligations involving him were no longer fulfilled, and, for a second time, Mercadante was then forced to shelve the plans about Francesca da Rimini, put aside now for several months. In fact, the scoring – very similar to that of the operas planned at La Scala in the same Carnival period – assumes that Francesca da Rimini was destined for a theatre of great means, like few others in Italy besides La Scala. But the failure of the opera may also have been due to the presence of the part of an amoroso en travesti, Paolo, to whom Mercadante assigns a prominent role also in terms of music: in 1831 and in Italy such a solution was no longer so frequent as a few years before or in provincial theatres, and so this condition may possibly have affected the fate of the negotiations in Milan, and may explain how the composer was then unable to have the score performed elsewhere. This critical edition is based on manuscript copies conserved in the Museo internazionale e Biblioteca della Musica di Bologna (autograph score) and in the Biblioteca Histórica Municipal in Madrid (score and separate parts). $121.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks
