Five States of Change was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing band repertoire.The composer writes: The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing*, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine andastrology, and in simple terms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life.An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions:- Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Five States of Change has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. *in full Wu zhong liu xing zhi chi or the five types of chi dominating at different times

Het werk is opgedragen aan Jappie Dijkstra en het MUI (Muziekuitleen- en Informatiecentrum)te Arnhem,als waardering voor hun inspanningen met betrekking tot de ontwikkeling van het repertoire voor blaasorkesten.De componist schrijft: Het idee voor het werk kwam in mij op toen ik een artikel las over een takbinnen de Chinese filosofie waarvan denaam wordt afgekort tot Wu Xing* - waar geen exacte vertaling voor is, maar wat zoveel betekent als vijf elementen, vijf fasen of vijf stadia van verandering. Het gaat om eenwezenlijk onderdeel van alle componenten binnen hetChinese gedachtegoed, inclusief de wetenschap, filosofie, geneeskunst en astrologie. Simpel gezegd draait het om het creëren van diverse cyclische verbanden tussen vijf elementendie in ieders leven een rol spelen.Een voorbeeld: Aarde - Metaal - Water- Hout - Vuur - (Aarde) enz. In deze cyclus bevat aarde metaal, metaal verandert in vloeistof (water) door verhitting, water helpt bomen te groeien, houtdat brandt creëert vuur, en vuur produceert as (aarde). De gedachte aandit cyclische principe leverde een reis door een muzikale wereld van emoties op. Five States of Changebestaat uit vijf delen die betrekking hebben op de emotionele cyclus. Ik heb geprobeerd de muziek op natuurlijke wijzete laten ontstaan, met zo weinig mogelijk herhalingen. Elk deel vloeit voort uit de muzikale elementen uit het slot van hetvoorgaande deel. Het openingsmateriaal komt, in getransformeerde gedaante, terug aan het einde van het werk.

Five States of Change wurde von Kunstfactor für die vierte Abteilung der Holländischen Nationalen Brass-Band-Meisterschaft (NBK) 2011 in Auftrag gegeben. Die Widmung gilt Jappie Dijkstra und dem Musik-Informationszentrum (MUI) in Arnhem(Holland), in Anerkennung derer außerordentlichen Bemühungen um die Entwicklung des Blasorchester-Repertoires. Der Komponist über sein Werk: Die Idee zu diesem Stück kam mir beim Lesen eines Artikels über eine Richtung derchinesischen Philosophie, die abgekürzt Wu Xing* heißt, was nicht wörtlich übersetzt werden kann, aber so viel wie fünf Elemente, fünf Phasen oder fünf Stadien der Verwandlung bedeutet. DiesesPrinzip nimmt eine zentrale Position im gesamten chinesischen Gedankengut ein, sei es in der Wissenschaft, Medizin oder Astrologie. Einfach ausgedrückt, werden damit in allen Lebensbereichen verschiedene zyklische Beziehungen zwischenfünf Elementen hergestellt.Zum Beispiel: Erde - Metall - Wasser - Holz - Feuer - (Erde) - usw. In diesem Zyklus enthält die Erde Metall, das sich bei Erhitzung verflüssigt (Wasser); Wasser lässt Bäume wachsen, deren Holz verbrennt (Feuer)und zu Asche wird (Erde), womit der Kreislauf von neuem beginnt.Mich interessierte besonders der Kreislauf von Gefühlen:Meditation - Trauer - Angst - Ärger - Freude - (Meditation) usw.Ich dachte mir, dass dieser Kreislauf eine wirkungsvolleemotionale Reise“ durch ein Musikstück darstellen könnte. Folglich besteht Five States of Change aus fünf gleichen Abschnitten, die diesen Kreislauf der Gefühle grob nachzeichnen. Ich habe versucht, die Musik organischwachsen zu lassen mit möglichst wenig Wiederholungen. Cette œuvre est dédiée Jappie Dijkstra et au Music Information Centre (MUI) d’Arnhem, aux Pays-Bas, en hommage leur rôle exceptionnel dans le développement du répertoire pour Orchestre Vent.Le compositeur écrit : L’idée de cette composition m’est venue alors que je lisais un article sur un aspect de la philosophie chinoise, connu sous l’abréviation de Wu Xing*, qu’il est impossible de traduire littéralement mais qui peut signifier, par exemple, cinq éléments, cinq phases ou cinq états de changement. Toutechose dans l’univers est le fruit d’un cycle de création (ou d’engendrement) et de domination (ou contrôle). Ce concept est essentiel tous les éléments de la pensée chinoise, y compris les sciences, la philosophie, la médecine et l’astrologie et, en termes simples, il représente les multiples rapports cycliques qui existent entre cinq éléments liés l’univers et toute chose dans l’univers, donc l’homme.Évoquons le cycle de la création : Terre - Métal - Eau - Bois - Feu - (Terre) etc. La terre contient des minéraux, source de métal, le métal peut être fondu et se liquéfie, l’eau arrose et fait pousser les arbres, le bois br le et produit du feu, le feu produit des cendres, une sorte de terre, dans une dynamique cyclique perpétuelle.Parmi tous les cycles existants, celui des émotions éveilla particulièrement mon intérêt : Méditation - Chagrin - Peur - Colère - Joie - (Méditation) etc. et je me suis dit que ce principe cyclique pourrait être la source d’un puissant et émotionnel voyage musical. Five States of Change se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. L’idea di comporre questo brano è venuta a Philip Sparke leggendo un articolo sulla filosofi a cinese che si basa su cicli di cinque elementi, fasi e stadi di cambiamento. A Sparke interessavano in particolare il flusso dei sentimenti come la meditazione, il lutto, la paura, la rabbia e la gioia. A partire da questi elementi ha composto un impressionante “viaggio” musicale suddiviso in cinque sezioni, tematicamente intrecciate tra loro, quasi a voler formare un cerchio.

The special occasion that Philip Sparke was honoured to write this piece for was the 200th anniversary of the Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen. Since Bad Säckingen is known as the ’Trompeterstadt’, or trumpeter city, Sparke’s creative process was influenced by Joseph Victor Scheffel’s poem, Der Trompeter von Säckingen (The Trumpeter from Säckingen), which is based on a true story. The overture starts with a majestic fanfare, followed by a lively molto vivace. It is joined by a brilliant trumpet call in honour of the city’s famous resident.

Overture for a Special Occasion is geschreven in opdracht van Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen ter gelegenheid van het tweehonderdjarig bestaan van het orkest, in 2011. De première van het werk vond plaats in januari van dat jaar,onder leiding van Johannes Brenke, de dirigent van het orkest. Stadtmusik Bad Säckingen, uit de gelijknamige plaats in het zuidwesten van Duitsland, werd opgericht in 1811 en is daarmee een van de oudste blaasorkesten in de regio.Het stadje Bad Säckingen (Bad betekent badplaats) staat bekend als ‘Trompeterstadt’ en kan bogen op een trompetmuseum, dat in 1985 de deuren opende. Voormalig directeur van het museum was de bekende Amerikaanse trompettist en musicoloogEdward H. Tarr. De huidige directeur is Johannes Brenke, tevens de dirigent van het orkest. De nauwe band die het stadje heeft met de trompet dateert van halverwege de 19e eeuw, toen de schilder en schrijver Joseph Victorvon Scheffel het populaire epische gedicht Der Trompeter von Säckingen schreef. Het was gebaseerd op een waar verhaal en het gaf de naam van de plaats bekendheid over de hele wereld. Op het plein voor de kloosterkerk staateen standbeeld van Scheffel en zijn trompetspeler. Overture for a Special Occasion is feestelijk van sfeer. Het werk opent met een plechtige fanfare, die de luisteraar meevoert naar een vreugdevol molto vivace. Als verbindingtussen beide gedeelten dient een enigmatisch trompetgeschal: een eerbetoon aan de beroemdste inwoner van het stadje.

Overture for a Special Occasion wè un brano commissionato dal Corpo Bandistico della Citt di Bad Säckingen in Germania nel 2011 in occasione del suo bicentenario. Nota per le sue terme, questa ridente cittadina tedesca ha anche un secondo nome: “Trompeterstadt” (citt del “trombettista”). La stretta associazione della citt alla tromba risale al XIX secolo quando uno dei suoi illustri abitanti, Joseph Victor von Scheffel, scrittore e romanziere, scrisse un poema divenuto molto popolare, Il trombettista di Säckingen. Di carattere festivo, questo brano inizia con una grandiosa fanfara, seguita da un brillante richiamo di tromba. Un molto vivace gioioso e coloritoregala a questa ouverture uno spumeggiante finale, tutto nel segno di una ricorrenza molto speciale!

The Geuzen Medal is an annual award given to people or organizations who have found unique ways to further democracy in the world and help eliminate dictatorships, racism, and discrimination. The original Geuzen fought against Spanish imperialism in Holland during the16th century. During the Second World War a group resisting the Nazis also named themselves De Geuzen. Jan de Haan incorporates Psalm 43, sung by a group of condemned prisoners shortly before their execution in 1943, into Geuzen Medal Fanfare, composed for the 25th bestowal of this special award.

Ieder jaar weer wordt ze weer uitgereikt: de Geuzenpenning. Dit is aan een persoon of organisatie die zich op bijzondere wijze inzet voor de democratie en tegen dictatuur, racisme en discriminatie. In de zestiende eeuw streden deGeuzen tegen de Spaanse bezetting. In de Tweede Wereldoorlog was er eveneens een verzetsgroep die zich zo noemde. Een deel van hen werd in 1943 veroordeeld tot de doodstraf. Vlak voor de voltrekking van het vonnis zetten zij psalm43 in. Precies deze psalm verwerkte Jan de Haan in zijn openingswerk Geuzen Medal Fanfare. Hij schreef het ter gelegenheid van de vijfentwintigste uitreiking.

Der Geuzenpenning (Geuzen Medal) wird jährlich an Menschen oder Organisataionen verliehen, die sich auf besondere Weise für die Demokratie und gegen Diktatur, Rassismus und Diskriminierung eingesetzt haben. Die ursprünglichen Geuzen kämpften gegen spanische Besatzung in Holland im 16. Jahrhundert; im Zweiten Weltkrieg nannte sich eine Widerstandsgruppe gegen die Deutschen ebenfalls De Geuzen. Den Psalm 43, den eine Gruppe von Verurteilten 1943 kurz vor ihrer Hinrichtung anstimmte, verarbeitete Jan de Haan in seinem Eröffnungswerk De Geuzen Medal Fanfare, das er zur 25. Verleihung dieses besonderen Ordens schrieb.

La Médaille des Gueux décernée par la Geuzen Resistance Foundation 1940-1945, met l’honneur une personne ou une organisation méritante, s’étant engagée dans la lutte pour la démocratie. Le nom de la fondation tire son origine de la révolte des Gueux, mouvement patriotique néerlandais. Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, des résistants reprirent le nom des Gueux. Lorsque quinze d’entre eux tombèrent aux mains des occupants allemands, ils entamèrent le Psaume 43. L’arrangement de Jan de Haan conserve l’authenticité de la mélodie originale.

Ogni anno la “Geuzen Medal”, viene conferita dalla Fondazione olandese “Geuzen Resistance 1940-1945 Foundation” quale tributo ad individui o istituzioni che si siano prodigate per la democrazia o contro le dittature, le discriminazioni ed il razzismo. Nel corso della seconda guerra mondiale, un gruppo di resistenti riprese il nome di “Geuzen”: 15 membri caddero prigionieri e al momento della loro fucilazione cantarono il Salmo 43.

Fanfare for Korea was commissioned by the first Korea International Concert band Festival, which took place in 2010, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. In this triumphant fanfare, composer Jacob de Haan uses the melody of Arirang, the most popular folk song in Korea. The Korea Festival Concert band performed the première at the festival, conducted by de Haan himself.

Fanfare for Korea is gecomponeerd in opdracht van het eerste Korea International Wind Band Festival. Dit festival vond plaats in 2010. Zestig jaar eerder brak in juni 1950 de oorlog uit in Korea. Ter gelegenheid van de herdenkinghiervan schreef Jacob de Haan deze compositie. In deze fanfare verwerkte hij de melodie van Arirang, het populairste en bekendste volkslied van Korea. Het Korea Festival Wind Orchestra verzorgde in Seoel de première tijdenshet festival onder leiding van Jacob de Haan zelf.

Fanfare for Korea wurde im Auftrag des 1. Koreanischen Internationalen Blasorchester-Festivals, das anlässlich des 60-jährigen Gedenkens an den Korea-Krieg stattfand, in Auftrag gegeben. Jacob de Haan verarbeitete in seinem Werk die Melodie von Arirang, dem beliebtesten und bekanntesten Volkslied Koreas. Das Korea Festival Orchestra sorgte während des Festivals in Seoul für die Uraufführung unter der Leitung von Jacob de Haan. Beim Abschlusskonzert in der Kriegs-Gedenkstätte wurde das Werk vom Asian Wind Orchestra unter der Leitung von Dennis Johnson gespielt.

This theme is announced by the horns with subsequent solos by the oboe, trumpet and clarinet. The mood is light and airy; I remember my students humming and whistling the theme after our rehearsals. The short legato bridge leads back to the opening fanfare and a rousing conclusion. Edgemont Festival Overture was performed at a district festival with over 300 students, grades 5 through 12. Although the technical requirements were in the wheelhouse for the average high school band, one of the hidden assets is the accessibility of the inner parts, making it possible for the younger players to participate. Mr. Hollander has been an active oboist, conductor, and educator for over forty years. As a conductor, he has directed the American Wind Ensemble, the Westchester, NY Pops Band, the Larchmont Summer Symphony and as music director/conductor of the Westchester Band, one of the longest running community bands in New York State. He has taught in the public school systems of Hempstead and Scarsdale, New York, and at Hofstra University. He is currently an associate professor at Lehman College-CUNY, and is preparing a book titled How to Build a Community Band.

As a conductor, he has directed the American Wind Ensemble, the Westchester, NY Pops Band, the Larchmont Summer Symphony and as music director/conductor of the Westchester Band, one of the longest running community bands in New York State.He has taught in the public school systems of Hempstead and Scarsdale, New York, and at Hofstra University. He is currently an associate professor at Lehman College-CUNY, and is preparing a book titled How to Build a Community Band.

This text of this piece use four languages - English, Hebrew, Italian, and French - to express joy and give thanks. Except for the word 'joy' which is presented simultaneously in all four languages at the outset of the work, the rest of the composition was composed initially without words.
In 1981, WFMT Radio in Chicago commissioned twelve composers to write short fanfares in celebration of the station’s thirtieth anniversary.  For one month at a time, each composer’s Fanfare was heard every day at a previously unannounced time slot.  Because of my special fondness for the human voice as an instrument, I decided to make my Fanfare a vocal one.  “My” month in this series being the month of November, the idea of giving thanks naturally suggested itself.  Though the work can be performed live by a minimum of five female voices, I really wanted to limit timbre differentiation to a minimum — hence the idea of pre-recording two singers and multi-tracking them.  And, in any event, it seemed especially appropriate to compose a work of this nature for the radio, a medium that is certainly quite distinct from the concert-hall. For a text, I put together a series of words in English, Hebrew, Italian and French, all concerned with joy and giving thanks.  Except for the word joy which is presented simultaneously in all four languages at the outset of the work, the rest of the composition was composed initially without words.  In a process akin, perhaps, to the orchestrating of music already composed, the words were then strung together by me to fit the sounds and the rhythms (a reversal, at least for me, of the usual process of combining text and music).
