We’re proud to showcase the legendary creativity of Lloyd Larson as he breathes new life into the time-honored hymns of our faith in the worship celebration, A Festival of Hymns. There’s never been a more meaningful time to come together in song, and this is the perfect opportunity for choir and congregation to come together around our shared heritage of hymnody. A Festival of Hymns can be presented as either a seasonal or non-seasonal work, and a number of performance options are available, including an SAB choral version and an optional full orchestration. Many of the hymn arrangements are available individually, as is a collection for four-hand piano duet, A Keyboard Festival of Hymns, Vol. 1, that may be used to accompany these outstanding settings.

The following notes were prepared by Alan Hollander, former Edgemont High School Band Director: The opening fanfare leads to a lively English Country melody reminiscent of the writing of the English composer Gustav Holst. This theme is announced by the horns with subsequent solos by the oboe, trumpet and clarinet. The mood is light and airy; I remember my students humming and whistling the theme after our rehearsals. The short legato bridge leads back to the opening fanfare and a rousing conclusion. Edgemont Festival Overture was performed at a district festival with over 300 students, grades 5 through 12. Although the technical requirements were in the wheelhouse for the average high school band, one of the hidden assets is the accessibility of the inner parts, making it possible for the younger players to participate. Mr. Hollander has been an active oboist, conductor, and educator for over forty years. As a conductor, he has directed the American Wind Ensemble, the Westchester, NY Pops Band, the Larchmont Summer Symphony and as music director/conductor of the Westchester Band, one of the longest running community bands in New York State. He has taught in the public school systems of Hempstead and Scarsdale, New York, and at Hofstra University. He is currently an associate professor at Lehman College-CUNY, and is preparing a book titled How to Build a Community Band. The following notes were prepared by Alan Hollander, former Edgemont High School Band Director:The opening fanfare leads to a lively “English Country†melody reminiscent of the writing of the English composer Gustav Holst.

Academic Festival March features a range of textures, dynamics, and articulation while highlighting a stately dotted motif using hooked bowing patterns throughout. Strong homophonic presentations of the main theme are balanced with antiphonal play between the upper and lower strings. Though written primarily in G Major, a short minor modulation will stretch your students to explore different finger patterns and extensions. While ideal for graduation processionals, this courtly march provides students with ample learning opportunities and paths to success, making it the perfect festival or contest selection any time of year.

Filled with rhythmic and harmonic interest as well as memorable melodies, MISSOURI RIVER FESTIVAL well displays David Moore's artistic exploration of thematic material. Moods of the river are artistically represented in the interplay between Maestoso, Allegro spiritoso and Andante mysterioso sections. An added practical advantage can be found in the brass parts, which are dynamic and fun to play while including plenty of ?resting time? carefully interspersed throughout - so you can use MISSOURI RIVER FESTIVAL at virtually any time in your program without fear of overtaxing the brass.
