Gottfried August Homilius belongs to the last generation of composers of the 18th century who, in addition to the popular Passion oratorios, continued to write oratorio Passions using biblical texts. From his pen a Passion for each of the four Gospels has survived. With sensitive arias, unusal orchestral sound and expressive turba choruses Homilius translated the traditional Passion to his times. It was surely not a coincidence that in Hamburg Carl Philipp Emanuel Bachr resorted primarily to the Passions of Homilius, especially the St. Mark Passion, which he first performed in an abridged version in 1770 and whose music he employed in 14 of his 21 pasticcio Passions. Only a fragment of the score survives of Bach's Christmas cantata Ehre sei Gott in der Hohe BWV 197a, composed to a text from the Picander cycle of 1728, insufficient to allow a reconstruction of the complete cantata. The fragment begins with the end section of an aria which Bach later transferred into his wedding cantata Gott ist unsre Zuversicht BWV 197. The movement, a lullaby of dreamlike beauty, has long been known as a particular jewel amongst Bach's cantatas. Starting with the surviving end section from the fragmentary score plus Bach's later revision, Diethard Hellmann has convincingly reconstructed the original version so that this aria can also be performed at Christmas. Bach's Wedding Cantata BWV 197 is available separately (Carus 31.197/50). Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3119700.

Dulon, born in 1769, was a highly esteemed flute virtuoso in his time, who undertook his first concert tours at the age of 13. Perhaps he owed part of his legendary renown to the fact that he was blind since his early childhood.

Originally recorded as a soprano sax solo feature on the Sammy Sammy Nestico CD A Portrait Of Sammy, this arrangement allows two soloing options: playing it as a (1) soprano feature played by the 2nd Alto player, or as a (2) tenor feature played by the 1st Tenor player. Either way, the haunting solo leaves plenty of room for individual interpretation.

A trumpeter is a cavalry or artillery soldier who gives signals with a trumpet. (Gerald Barry, 1998)This piece may be performed on any of the following instruments in different transpositions. If played by a string instrument, there should be no vibrato. It may be played by Flute, Alto Flute, Bass Flute, Piccolo, Oboe, Cor Anglais, Clarinet, Basset Clarinet, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Contrabassoon, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Tuba, any other Brass Band instrument, Mouth Organ, Ondes Martenot, Concertina, Bagpipes, Tubular Bells, Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass.In thinking of the register in which to play it, thought should be given to the drama and colour of the instrument involved. For example, if it were played by a Contrabassoon, the version in this edition should be transposed down two octaves and a minor 6th, so that the lowest note in the melody is B flat, the lowest note on the Contrabassoon.

Mendelssohns unfinished 3rd oratorio in its first critical edition. The parts Die Geburt Christi and Das Leiden Christi are presented with full orchestration. In 1852, five years after Mendelsohn's death, two independently-performable fragments of an unfinished oratorio were published under the title Christus. The second fragment, The Suffering of Jesus, comes from the middle of the Passion story: the scene Jesus before Pilot is presented with rapid, dramatic alternation between the recitatives of the evangelist (tenor) and choruses of the people. A contemplative choral movement closes the fragment.

The prestigious Latin psalm setting Deus judicium tuum (Ps. 71/72) is among the finest from Telemann's pen. Its composition is associated with the beginning of his eight-month sojourn in Paris in the fall of 1737, during which time he celebrated musical triumphs in the French metropolis. As he himself reported, with no little pride, the piece was performed twice in three days by almost one hundred selected people in the Concert spirituel. Three magnificent choral movements frame a richly-colored succession of demanding solo movements. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3911400.

Given that appendices have since been included in other volumes, it now seems appropriate to compile an appendix for Volume 1A in the form of a separate publication, Volume 1C of the series. Even with a whole volume available, however, it is impossible to include all known arrangements. Such a publication would be of disproportionate size: it would require about 600 pages, due largely to the two complete or near-complete sets of concerto arrangements. The present volume thus includes only selections from these sets of concerto arrangements and also only a selection from Edward Finch’s complete set of arrangements in the form of transverse-flute sonatas. The smaller sets of arrangements—either as solo sonatas or as trio sonatas—are included in their entirety. The available arrangements fall into three distinct categories: solo sonatas, trio sonatas, and concertos. There are fourteen arrangements by Edward Finch for transverse flute with figured bass; they are found in the so-called Armstrong-Finch manuscript and comprise a full set of twelve plus two duplicate versions. Four of these arrangements are included in the present volume. Three more arrangements for transverse flute or recorder with figured bass are found in anthologies of sonatas for these instruments published in the 1720s; they are all of them edited here. Geminiani’s Sonatas VII-XII were transformed into trio sonatas by Francesco Barsanti and published in this format in 1727. These arrangements are included here in complete form as well. A near-complete set of concerto arrangements—Sonata XI is missing—was composed by Charles Avison and a complete set by Gerhard Christoph Raupach, both sets composed probably in the 1730s. From each of these two sets, two examples were selected for inclusion in the present volume. They are supplemented by single concerto arrangements by William Hayes (after Sonata IV) and Johan Helmich Roman (after Sonata VI), composed at all probability in the 1730s as well. None of these concerto arrangements was published in the eighteenth century.

The Te Deum, that was composed in 1832, is a convincing work with quick changes of expression and warm orchestral colors. Choruses, including a double chorus, alternate with arias and soloist ensembles, smooth woodwind sounds and an obbligato solo violin with orchestral tuttis and special sound combinations, e.g., in Tibi gloriosus for male voices, bassoons, contrabassoon and three trombones. In a mixture of cantata and concert piece, Beethoven set a hymn to art in his Choral Fantasy. The work, about 20 minutes in length, is often seen as a precursor to the Ode to Joy in the 9th Symphony. After a piano introduction, a dialog between piano and orchestra develops in the space of just 400 measures, before the soloists and chorus enter for the last 200 measures. (If necessary, the solo parts can be sung by members of the chorus or a semi-chorus.) In the main section, headed Finale (beginning with the double basses and celli), the theme from Beethoven's early song Gegenliebe (WoO 118, also used in the Ode to Joy) is presented, varied and finally used in the March in F major. The main source of the Choral Fantasia for the edition is the first edition of the parts, published in 1811 and corrected by Beethoven; alongside this an English edition of the parts published by Clementi (1810) has been consulted for comparison. The edition contains an English singing version in a translation by Natalia Macfarren from the 19th century. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.1039400.
