Daughters of Erin was commissioned by and dedicated to the University of Notre Dame Concert Band, Dr. Ken Dye, director. It was composed in 2020 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first women to be admitted into the Notre Dame Concert Band. The university was an all-male school from its founding in 1842. The Notre Dame Band was formed during the 1845-46 academic year. The university became co-educational with the admission of women in 1972. Two years earlier, in 1970, the band director Robert F. O'Brien, secured permission for women from nearby St. Mary's College (the official sister school of Notre Dame) to be part of the Notre Dame Band. Appropriate to the theme of Daughters of Erin, selections include The Bells of St. Mary's, I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen, and two Irish Jigs: Girls of Our Town and The Women of Kilkenny. Daughters of Erin celebrates all the women who have performed in the University of Notre Dame Band for the past fifty years, and all who will follow in their footsteps in the years to come. Lord of the Lake is a work in three separate movements which tells the legend of the “Sea of Flines.†Stéphane Coquet, the conductor of the Flines-lez-Râches concert band, wanted to celebrate the 140th anniversary of his band by commissioning this work. The piece can be performed either on its own, or with a narrator who intervenes between each movement, telling this legend where children and their parents thwart the cruelty of a lord holed up in his castle.

This work is based on Mozarts overture to The Magic Flute, breaking down the themes and motives from that overture as well as the famous Queen of the Night aria, Der Holle Rache, and spinning them out of control. While the title seems to be nonsense, it is actually an anagram of Zauberflote. Im sure that Mozart would have appreciated the humor in this work, even though the harmonic language is quite far removed from the Classical era. The piece opens with repeated E-flats, suggesting the beginning of the main theme of the Magic Flute overture, and it gradually expands outward chromatically, creating gritty dissonances. Other borrowed motives from Mozart creep their way in, as well as complex polyrhythms on the repeated notes. I imitate the structure of Mozarts overture by writing a fugue (subtitled Overt Metrical Fugue, a serendipitous anagram of Magic Flute Overture) using a subject that mashes up all of the disassembled Mozart motives. Gradually, I work in references to the excessively high coloratura part of Der Holle Rache, treating it as a second subject. After the fugue runs its course, I quote small but recognizable parts of the overture almost verbatim, but only from the players farthest away from the conductor to create a disembodied sound.

The “cat and mouse chase” has been a part of folklore and popular culture since the time of pharaohs in ancient Egypt. Over the ages, the chase has served as a metaphor for the suspenseful and sometimes alternating relation between hunter and hunted. In the modern age, the story has been played out hundreds of times in popular animated cartoons, often accompanied by a musical score representing the energetic spirit of the chase with lively twists and turns, sudden surprises and tongue-in-cheek music. In this spirit of playfulness and suspense, Robert Spittal has created a marvelous work that is both entertaining and exhilarating.
