“I'm gonna keep on servin' my Father . . .†In the style of a straightforward SATB unaccompanied spiritual. Very rhythmic with a sense of pressing forward. After the tune is sung twice by the choir, a soprano solo takes over the tune with the choir singing an attractively syncopated accompaniment. .

The title Deadly Pleasures was suggested by the content of DM Thomas's dramatic poem on an imagined episode in the life of Cleopatra. Cleopatra offers any three men from her royal court a night of unbridled passion, in return for which they must forfeit their lives the next morning. Three men step forward, the last of which is the son she had by her brother Ptolemy, whom she gave away at birth. Unaware that Cleopatra is his mother, he gives her wine laced with mandragora and makes his escape before daybreak. The grisly tale provided the composer many opportunities for dramatic characterisation. The use of a narrator necessitated an episodic structure in which the music captures the atmosphere suggested by the text, and mirrors the different moods as the journey unfolds and the three characters live out their different fates.

This colorful motet takes for its text the collect for the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord (Book of Common Prayer 1979). The setting explores mixed meters and polytriadic sonorities within a straight-forward ternary form. Numerous divisis are made easier through soprano-tenor and alto-bass octave coupling.

'Stucke fur die Jugend' intends to carefully introduce the piano pupils to new music. At the time that the piano pieces were created in 1927, Joseph Haas sat on the jury at the Donaueschingen Music Festival together with Paul Hindemith. In his typical manner, the pieces looked forward to the future without burning bridges to the past. The stylistic elements to be mentioned in particular are the sparing use of harmonies which give special emphasis to the linear, the staccato, the arpeggios, and the frequently used progressions of fourths. The influence of his teacher Max Reger can be noticed as well from time to time. The rhythmic energies running through the pieces are of great appeal and educational value. This new edition combines the pieces originally published in two volumes in one volume.

The collection Polyhymnia Caduceatrix & Panegyrica of 1619 is rightly regarded as the high point in Michael Praetorius's output. It combines Solennische Friedt- und Frewden-Concert: which Praetorius as a travelling musician had composed largely for festive occasions - he writes of Kayser: Konig: Chur: vnd Furstlichen zusammen Kunfften - and also for furnehme Capellen vnd Kirchen. In these chorale concerti the highly modern, Italian style and the Protestant chorale combine and form a symbiosis which showed the way forward for the history of German music. The chorale settings draw on influences from Venetian polychoral music, use ritornelli and employ obbligato instruments in a way which is beyond compare, even in contemporary Italy. Here we see a quite different side of the master from the composer of Es ist ein Ros entsprungen. And above all, Praetorius always remains a practical musician who ensures that these breathtaking choral concerti can also be effectively performed with smaller forces, sometimes considerably reduced ones. The six-part polyphonic choral setting of the German Gloria (the first and fourth verses are underlaid) is divided, following Italian models, by tutti sections in triple meter. Instruments join the tutti sections ad libitum, strengthening the vocal parts. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1002900.

Ton Koopman's new edition of all 16 organ concertos by Handel has drawn to a close. The quality of this edition has been highly praised from all quarters. Source-critical responsibility goes hand in hand with a high level of performance practice when Koopman provides interpretative tips for the ad libitum passages in the organ part without restricting the creativity of the interpreter who is interested in stylistic matters and prefers to work out his own solutions. I want to make an edition that is not a Koopman interpretation, but contains only that which Handel really wrote. Nevertheless, there are occasional performance suggestions in small print which are elucidated in the Critical Commentary. (Ton Koopman in Concerto) Koopman offers a basically unmarked text, thus leaving the performance details up to the performer. Especially note-worthy is the clear printing, extensive preface and detailed Critical Notes. (Katholische Kirchenmusik) Whoever wishes to hear the entire Koopman edition on CD can look forward to the new recording by Christian Schmitt and the Stuttgarter Kammerorchester (Brilliant Classics). This is the first recording for which all 16 new Koopman editions were used as the basis for the performance.

Steve’s experience playing Guitar with the Rippingtons and many other funk groups in the NY area has enabled him to craft this Medium Bouncy Funk groove with great lines and really funky rhythm section writing. A nice call and response in the horns keeps this composition driving forward and fun to play. Solo is written for the Tenor Sax with room for the Guitar to shine as well. Impressive!

An exciting British/Regimental style march by a master of writing for young musicians, Joe Compello's, The Royal Regiment is tuneful and harmonically straight forward. Set in a stately march tempo, the overall effect is of a band on parade approaching from far away and, after a fully-scored climax, receding to the sound of drums fading out in the distance. This is a good alternative march selection for contest or festival. Duration: 3'.

Trombone and Piano' was commissioned by Canadian trombonist Dale Sorensen in 2011. I was immediately interested in the idea of blending the sounds of the two instruments which often sound quite disparate in traditional arrangements, so I chose to restrict the piano writing to the same range as the trombone for the entire piece. The loud turbulence of the piano at the beginning becomes a kind of rondo-theme bookmark throughout, and provides momentous foundation that the trombone line rides through and above. A contrasting texture is when the instruments transform into rhythmic and melodic unison, and drive forward as one.

Ho evokes a day in the life of a young child through rapid waves of chromaticism, with restless time signatures keeping things tumbling forward. Fists and forearms are employed as little tempers flare, while elsewhere respite is found in the drift of sleep, notes twinkling rubato-like in the piano's upper register.

...from the author of The Musician’s Soul In The Musician’s Soul, author James Jordan sets readers on a journey beyond the precise techniques of artistry and into a place of selfexploration, where music can be created with new heartfelt honesty and beauty. With The Musician’s Spirit, a companion book to The Musician’s Soul, and The Musician’s Walk, Jordan takes us to the next level of creating a more powerful art form. The Musician’s Spirit focuses not on the self, but on others and the stories each artist is able to share through his or her work. Using thought-provoking quotations, real-life stories, and visual art, Jordan challenges all artists to share themselves with their audience and fellow artists, thereby creating a more personal and beautiful body of work. This book offers practical and inspirational words on courage and vision, the arts of listening and trust, conquering the fear of looking foolish, and the importance of story in teaching. Jordan also includes a Storying Guide to help the reader bring out his or her own story as well as space for personal notes, stories, and reflections. Though written with musicians in mind, this beautiful illustrated book offers tremendous insight for any artist wanting to share his or her vision and story with the world. “Although written for musicians, this stunningly crafted book offers tremendous insight for any artist wanting to share their story and gifts with others.†“Communicating music is not academic, nor is Jordan’s book. The Musician’s Spirit is a guide to help us step out and experience music in the right place.†— Thomas R. Vozzella (Choral Journal, Volume 44, Number 9)  Those of us who have studied with inspiring teachers know how we looked forward to each lesson. Foreword by Eric Whitacre Innovation in the Ensemble Arts caps a trilogy of volumes that delves into the building blocks necessary for a vibrant, growing music organization. In the first volume—Mentoring in the Ensemble Arts: Helping Others Find Their Voice—author Tim Sharp examines the mentor/ proteÌgeÌ dynamic and its critical impact on the lives of ensembles and their conductors. In the second volume—Collaboration in the Ensemble Arts: Working and Playing Well with Others— he challenges us to think beyond our traditional confines and to expand our worldview to one that encompasses creative new ideas, concepts, and connections. Now Innovation in the Ensemble Arts lays out the techniques of transformative renewal that enable music educators to lead individual ensemble members in the personal growth that fuels the ensemble’s contributions to the community. Sharp establishes a mindset that can lead to ongoing relevancy and create public value for today’s ensembles. Tim Sharp (BM, MCM, DMA), an active choral conductor, researcher, and writer, is Executive Director of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), the national professional association for choral conductors, educators, scholars, students, and choral music industry representatives in the United States. He is also Artistic Director and Conductor of the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus. In language informed by years of research and personal experience, this book leads us through “Stages in the Process of Innovation,†“Foundational Pillars for Building an Innovation Mindset,†“Creativity versus Innovation,†and “Moving from Innovation to Impact.†Along the way, Sharp presents concrete and practical plans for turning insight into action. Innovation in the Ensemble Arts is not only thought-provoking and inspirational, but it also illustrates how to generate momentum that can propel music ensembles forward in the pursuit of musical excellence.

The title, Aerius, is a Latin term meaning “soaring†or “rising aloftâ€. This piece is signature Carl Strommen at his best. The piece begins with a lush brass chorale that is developed before leading to an energetic presto section. The composition comes full circle and finishes with a majestic return of the chorale material from the opening. A welcome addition to the repertoire. The title Aerius is a Latin term meaning “soaring†or “rising aloft.†The students chose this title to signify the forward momentum and overall journey of their time in the high school band program. With new events and performances, and a first time commissioning a work, this piece signifies the great strides the band has made in recent years. The opening brass chorale section should be played very connected, observing the two-measure phrasing and breathing as one cohesive unit. The Presto section at m. 25 should be taken between 165-170 bpm. the vibraphone soloist should use medium-hard mallets with the pedal on. The sustained notes at m. 41 should be played way under the upper woodwinds to get the greatest effect as it builds in volume and intensity in m. 49, and again into m. 57.At m. 69, the percussion must sustain the pulse to the conductor’s tempo, careful not to add accents they’re hearing among the other sections. After the ritardando in m. 83, push the tempo at m. 85 slightly to where the woodwinds feel comfortable playing the triplet figure with appropriate breathing and phrasing.- Andrew Monsen, Hauppauge High School Band Director, June 2017.

A relentless 6/8 accompaniment drives this piece forward with exciting momentum. Two-against-three rhythm patterns add urgency to the theme, requiring precision in counting and maintaining an even tempo. Intensity builds like the first piercing light on the morning horizon, flourishing toward a stately middle section that reflects the grandeur of glorious colors and spacious skies. Players with the melody should take care to sustain with a warm, ringing tone. The pizzicato accompaniment should also stay unrushed and steady. The following restatement of the fast opening theme soars to a triumphant finale.
