The collection Polyhymnia Caduceatrix & Panegyrica of 1619 is rightly regarded as the high point in Michael Praetorius's output. It combines Solennische Friedt- und Frewden-Concert: which Praetorius as a travelling musician had composed largely for festive occasions - he writes of Kayser: Konig: Chur: vnd Furstlichen zusammen Kunfften - and also for furnehme Capellen vnd Kirchen. In these chorael concerti the highly modern, Italian style and the Protestant chorale combine and form a symbiosis which showed the way forward for the history of German music. The chorale settings draw on influences from Venetian polychoral music, use ritornelli and employ obbligato instruments in a way which is beyond compare, even in contemporary Italy. Here we see a quite different side of the master from the composer of Es ist ein Ros entsprungen. And above all, Praetorius always remains a practical musician who ensures that these breathtaking chorale concerti can also be effectively performed with smaller forces, sometimes considerably reduced ones. In the chorale setting Wie schon leuchtet der Morgenstern Praetorius wrote for a five-part ensemble which is joined in some sections by a four-part capella. For the ensemble, Praetorius suggested both voices and instruments, which he uses in a sophisticated texture of sound, the instruments sometimes duplicating the voices and sometimes alternating with them. Beethoven's Meeres Stille und Gluckliche Fahrt (Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage) op. 112 for four-part mixed chorus and symphony orchestra - his setting of a pair of poems by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe - defies straightforward categorization, but can best be described as a choral ode. Beethoven in fact never voyaged by sea, but his composition, premiered in 1815, continues to surprise even today. He depicted in music the smooth surface of the motionless water and the oppressive calm, which meant nothing other than being becalmed, a delayed voyage, and short rations in the era of sailing, with the same intensity as a freshening increasing wind, with which Aeolus, the God of the winds, ultimately enabled the longed-for prosperous voyage to take place. The composed calmness of the motionless sea is conveyed in the low register used throughout, in which the chorus sings the first poem accompanied by washes of pianissimo sounds on the strings. There is a surprising moment with the musical portrayal of the ungeheuere Weite (immense breadth), at which the vocal-instrumental writing suddenly crescendos to forte and unfolds into a texture of over five octaves. By contrast Gluckliche Fahrt is written in restlessly-compiled meters, whose musical setting in flowing movement with diatonic scale passages evokes happy excitement and confidence. The work was dedicated to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whom Beethoven greatly admired throughout his life. The work has now been published in a new critical edition based on the first printed edition and the performance score which Beethoven himself checked and corrected. The Blumine movement included in the original five-movement version of Mahler's Symphony No. 1 was long considered lost. Composed as early as 1884 for a theater piece, Mahler inserted it into the symphony as its second movement in 1888. After three performances, he turned his back on this Love Episode, calling the sentimental, gushing movement a youthful folly, and removed it. Mahler's Hamburg autograph score was only rediscovered in 1966. Benjamin Britten gave the Blumine movement a new hearing at the 1967 Aldeburgh Festival. The critical new edition is based for the first time on the autograph score, together with the meanwhile rediscovered score copy with Mahler's last revisions. The cloth-bound volume PB 5661 contains next to the final version of the four-movement Symphony, the Blumine movement.First edition based on the copy of the score revised by Mahler Hamburg 1893.

Today Monteverdi's Selva morale et spirituale (1641) stands entirely in the shadow of his famous Vespers 1610. The editions from 1610 and 1641 both include music for the Mass and Vespers, but each of these collections was composed under much different circumstances during Monteverdi's lifetime. If the works of 1610 are a bold combination of traditional compositional techniques and avant garde music, which were intended by this weary Court Composer at Mantua as an application portfolio for a new job, the 1641 collection is the only church music by the mature Monteverdi which was published after almost thirty years in his position as Music Director of St. Mark's Cathedral: the latter, a kind of best of collection from his many years of experience as a church musician. In Venice the composer had not only a fabulous, but a large ensemble at his disposal (finally, about 35 singers, alone)! The big effect in this music is the combination of soloistic and weighty tutti sections, it makes the music, with its clearly defined sections and, for the most part homophonic choral passages more easily performable than the Vespers for today's choirs. The new edition, comprised initially of three volumes, also includes those works from the Selva Morale (a Mass and two Magnificats) which have already been published by Carus, as well as all further liturgical compositions for use in the church. Salmi II contains the additional settings of the multiple settings of the psalms and also the psalm Memento (each of the first of the multiple settings of the psalms are to be found in the Salmi I volume). The edition is based on the methods employed in the much acclaimed Carus edition of the Vespers: - It contains a detailed foreword with suggestions for notation, scoring and for the liturgical use of individual compositions. - For the present edition four of the five surviving printed copies, as well as contemporary manuscript were consulted. Facsimiles illustrate special characteristics of the edition of 1641. A Critical Report makes clear all of the editorial decisions made in the edition. - All of the pieces are printed untransposed and using the original note values. - All of the pieces are available in single editions with complete performance material. - Vocal scores of all works with obbligato instruments facilitate rehearsal. - Instrumental parts for collaparte accompaniment of tutti-sections (including text underlay).

Hermann Schroeder (1904-1984) is one of the most important composers of Catholic church music in the 20th century. Apart from more than 100 organ works and masses, he also wrote numerous motets. The present four-part motet Freu dich, du werte Christenheit for mixed a cappella choir (SATB) was written in 1975. This old Resurrection song from the 16th century is based on a setting by the Franco-Flemish composer Johannes des Cleve (around 1529-1582) which has been skillfully transferred by Schroeder to the modern age with subtle harmonies. The tenor voice sings the cantus firmus and is embedded in archaic-seeming sounds typical of Schroeder by the other voices. This three-verse Resurrection song of about five minutes is perfect for church services at Easter.

The String Quartet No.1 was composed in 1919, actually making it his fourth quartet, but it was the first to be published. It is scored in five movements: Prelude- Pastorale- Scherzo- Elegy- Rondo Retrospectivo.
Cyril Scott (1879-1970) was a British composer, pianist and poet. His most popular works, by which he is largely remembered today, were written in the years preceding the Second World War, however he continued to compose prolifically, in the face of indifference from the outside world, right up until his death at the age of 91. His music is predominantly in the Romantic style, and serves as a tasteful reminder of abygone age.

This piece about joy, funk, and groove is fun to play. It was written in 1994, inspired by the music of Bob Mintzer and it features the tenor saxophone (improvised solo and written counterpoint lines). The original version for five saxophones is actually a piece for quartet and soloist. In the four saxophone version, the tenor solo part is integrated in the quartet and the soloist plays in the ensemble. The whole piece is based on clear rhythmic and melodic motives, which develop and flow from one part into the other, thus creating a funky groove.

Program Notes: Stylistically diverse -- tranquil, spirited pastoral, sensitive, energetic -- exhibiting a remarkable palette, the five movements of SINFONIA IX form a unique symphonic statement. Movement I, Prelude, is about contrasts: A lazy, smooth, motive in brasses alternates with, and then joins, an active and detached motive in woodwinds. The spirited Movement II, Morley's Ghost, is an intricate canonic collage and homage to that venerable theoretician & composer, Thomas Morley. By contrast, movement III, Dialog, speaks in a relaxed, lyrical, and pastoral language as it develops its gently rising and falling motives. Movement IV, Waltz, innocently celebrates the joys of childhood with a lilting melody and rondo form. For the rousing Finale, Movement V begins with a martial call of repeated-notes, heralding a headstrong journey of power and excitement. Like a number of the composer's other works, SINFONIA IX is based on earlier material: A brass sextet, written in 1966 when the composer was nineteen years old, forms the raw material for the first, third and fifth movements, while a later work, Martin's Waltz (a children's piece for flutes and clarinets composed in 1975) is the basis of the fourth movement. The second movement, however, is a fanciful contrapuntal commentary on Thomas Morley's 16th-century canzonet, Fire and Lightning. SINFONIA IX is dedicated to John Raforth, a distinguished band director and music educator at West High School in Madison, Wisconsin. The work was commissioned by his friends and former students, and was completed in 1977. Its first publication some twenty years later is a result of the increasing attention paid by university band directors to the earlier Sinfonias, particularly Sinfonia III (Hymns and Dances); Sinfonia V (Sinfonia Sacra et Profana); and now, Sinfonia IX. Whereas the first two works are wind ensemble compositions that have been championed equally by the concert band, Sinfonia IX is the composer's first college-level Sinfonia written especially for concert band. Ensemble instrumentation: 1 Piccolo, 8 Flute 1-2, 2 Oboe, 1 Eb Clarinet, 4 Bb Clarinet 1, 4 Bb Clarinet 2, 4 Bb Clarinet 3, 3 Bb Bass Clarinet, 2 Bassoon, 4 Eb Alto Saxophone, 2 Bb Tenor Saxophone, 1 Eb Baritone Saxophone, 3 Bb Trumpet 1, 3 Bb Trumpet 2, 3 Bb Trumpet 3, 2 F Horn 1-2, 2 F Horn 3-4, 3 Trombone 1, 3 Trombone 2, 3 Baritone B.C., 2 Baritone T.C., 4 Tuba, 3 String Bass, 2 Timpani, 5 Percussion.
