Francesco Durante's Magnificat in B flat major is one of his most important works and also one of the most siginifcant settings of the Magnficat text, here in cantata form. This work displays a mastery of the polyhonic style and though the use of certain pre-classical, modern elements its various forms never sound archaic, rather the work presents a synthesis leading to a unique style. For a performance during the Christmas season, Christmas hymns can be inserted between each of the individual movements. Questo metodo è rivolto a chi vuole intraprendere lo studio della tiorba avendo già qualche base di studi musicali e abbia almeno una base pratica su un altro strumento a pizzico. È rivolto anche ai liutisti/tiorbisti di ogni livello che vogliano migliorarsi. Si può anche iniziare lo studio della tiorba senza una precedente pratica strumentale ma, in particolare per i bambini, è preferibile iniziare lo studio con uno strumento a corde di dimensioni più ridotte.
Durante il periodo storico di maggior diffusione della tiorba, il Seicento, non sono stati scritti dei metodi per lo strumento così come li intenderemmo oggi.
Tra i vari manoscritti per tiorba compilati nell’epoca Barocca, però, alcuni contengono esemplificazioni utili allo studio (passaggi, cadenze, accordi e progressioni melodiche). Tuttavia questi scritti, spesso anonimi, contengono parecchi errori, e qualche volta non sono sistematici nella trattazione.
Inoltre il materiale musicale in essi contenuto a volte non è rilevante quindi, per l’insieme di queste ragioni, questi manoscritti non possono essere impiegati in toto come metodi per lo studio strumentale.
C’è poi un certo numero di trattati seicenteschi sul basso continuo destinati alla tiorba.
Questa produzione, insieme alle intavolature a stampa e i manoscritti musicali di cui parleremo qui di seguito, ha fornito il materiale di lavoro dal quale abbiamo cercato di trarre lo spunto per un percorso progressivo e sistematico.
Dall’inizio del Novecento ad oggi in Europa sono stati pubblicati diversi metodi per liuto, ma non per tiorba. Il repertorio per liuto solo è più vasto e potrebbe giustificare questo fatto, ma al tempo stesso la musica per tiorba ha caratteristiche molto diverse. È necessario, dunque, un approccio autonomo alle tecniche, al repertorio, al basso continuo.
Nel panorama editoriale, quindi, questo è il primo metodo dedicato alla tiorba.
