Edited by Michael Brand. Score and parts. Duration 5:10. Published by G & M Brand Music Publishers (CN.R10299). Holst's masterful military band orchestration of J.S. Bach's Organ Fugue in G Major BWV 577. Michael Brand's new edition expands/doubles some of Holst's original parts to make the piece playable by today's modern concert band.
When Holst was commissioned to write 'Hammersmith' for the BBC Wireless Military Band in 1928 he felt rather out of practice in orchestrating for the medium. For some years he had had the idea of arranging some Bach fugues for brass and military band so he set himself the task of scoring the Organ Fugue in G Major BWV 577 (from Preludes, Fugues and Fantasias). He, rather than Bach, called it 'Fugue a la Gigue.' The piece made an ideal exercise and Holst's brilliant dovetailing of the counterpoint between different instruments shows his mastery. The piece is technically demanding and the characteristic unison clarinet writing suggests the orchestral conception of a large wind ensemble rather than a band. It was this conception which the composer carried forward into 'Hammersmith.' 'Fugue a la Gigue' was published for military band in 1928 by Boosey & Hawkes and shortly afterwards for orchestra, but with only short scores, as was customary at the time. This edition has the full score of Holst's original orchestration with optional added parts for full concert band. $85.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 3 to 4 weeks

| Passacaglia and Fugue in C-Minor, Bwv 582 Concert band - Intermediate Hal Leonard
Score and Parts Concert Band; Wind Orchestra (Score & Parts) - Grade 5 SKU: H...(+)
Score and Parts Concert Band; Wind Orchestra (Score & Parts) - Grade 5 SKU: HL.4008644 Wind Orchestra, Grade 5, 12:45 Score and Parts. Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Franco Cesarini. Editions Franco Cesarini. Classical, Fugue. Softcover. Duration 765 seconds. Hal Leonard #EFC004-CBHA. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.4008644). ISBN 9798350115024. UPC: 196288189695. The Passacaglia is a set of instrumental variations based on an ostinato bass. Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C-minor for organ represents the pinnacle of what had been achieved in this compositional form at that time. In Franco Cesarini’s arrangement for large wind orchestra, the particularly careful interpretation of the original piece enables him to exploit all the sound colors at his disposal, and in this sumptuous guise Bach's work also takes on a grandiose dimension, albeit tinged with late-Romanticism. The exposition of the beautiful theme begins in the bass part, immediately creating a solemn and serious atmosphere which is accentuated by the intensely pathetic character of the first variations. Up to the tenth variation it remains confined to the bass, but in subsequent ones it also passes to the soprano and alto register. The integrity of the theme is also embellished with elegant arpeggios, in whose lower and higher extensions the theme can be distinguished. Towards the end it returns to the bass in an impressive thickening of the polyphonic texture that swiftly re-establishes the key of C-minor. The “Thema fugatum†which follows immediately does not constitute a Fugue in its own right, rather it is nothing but the twenty-first and most extensive variation of the Passacaglia. This time Bach uses only the first half of the theme, superimposing a rhythmic countersubject that considerably enlivens the entire development of the composition. The polyphonic discourse becomes increasingly dense, until the building tension peaks in a powerful “Neapolitan sixth†chord, followed by a sudden pause. This culminating moment then leads to the coda and final cadence on a bright C-major chord. $216.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Carus Verlag #CV 31.076/09. Published by Carus Verlag (CA.3107609). ISBN 9790007044930. Key: C major / a minor. Language: German/English. The cantata Die Himmel erzahlen die Ehre Gottes (The heavens are telling of God in glory) BWV 76 by Johann Sebastian Bach was written for the 2nd Sunday after Trinity, which fell on 6 June 1723 in the year it was first performed. This ambitious two-part work was the second cantata which Bach wrote after taking up the position of Kantor of St. Thomas's in Leipzig. Bach's aim was evidently to demonstrate a particularly wide range of musical forms in both the arias and the recitatives in this cantata. The opening chorus is based on verses 2 and 4 of Psalm 19, with verse 4 structured as a choral fugue. Both parts of the cantata end with a chorale movement with different verses from the Lutheran hymn Es woll uns Gott genadig sein. The text refers loosely to the epistle reading from the 1st letter of St John, but deals more with general thoughts about the temptations of the Christian which can be overcome through love. Bach also performed the first part of the cantata later with minor revisions, but evidently no alterations to the text, on Reformation Day in Leipzig. Text: Christiane Mariane von Ziegler. The cantata Es ist euch gut, dass ich hingehe [It is well that I go forth] BWV 108 for Cantate Sunday is one of the cantatas composed on texts by the Leipzig poetess Christiane Mariane von Ziegler with which Bach concluded his second annual cycle of cantatas after he had abandoned the annual cycle of chorale cantatas at Easter 1725. The text contains two sayings by Jesus which are taken directly from the Sunday gospel reading (John 16:5-15). The quotation opening the cantata was set by Bach as a bass aria with solo oboe d'amore; it breathes tranquility and assurance. The second quotation, however, is set as an extended choral fugue in three sections; it forms the center of the cantata. The free text surrounding the biblical quotations is divided into two arias in which the emphasis is on melodic lines; there is only one single recitative, the original text of which was substantially abridged by Bach. A four-part chorale concludes the cantata. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3110800. $4.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Score and parts available separately - see item CA.3110800. $105.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

| Between the Two Rivers Marching band [Score] - Intermediate Anglo Music
Fanfare Band - Grade 5 SKU: BT.AMP-061-120 Variations on Ein' feste Bu...(+)
Fanfare Band - Grade 5 SKU: BT.AMP-061-120 Variations on Ein' feste Burg. Composed by Philip Sparke. Elite Series. Concert Piece. Score Only. Composed 2003. Anglo Music Press #AMP 061-120. Published by Anglo Music Press (BT.AMP-061-120). Between the Two Rivers was commissioned by Fanfare ‘Prins Hendrik’, from Aalst in the Netherlands. The title derives from the fact that the town of Aalst lies between two tributaries of the River Dommel. The community is a highly religious one, so the famous Luther chorale, Ein’ Feste Burg, was an obvious choice for Philip Sparke to use as the theme for this new work. It takes the form of a theme with four contrasting variations. Variation 1 is a moto perpetuo, variation 2 has a slower march like feel, variation 3 is a sinister slow movement and the final variation is in the form of a lyrical fugue. Between The Two Rivers is sure to become a major work in modern concert bandrepertoire.
Between the Two Rivers est une ?uvre fluide, lyrique, mystérieuse et élégante. $35.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks
