Written in 1885, the eight songs after texts by the now little-known poet Hermann von Gilm have a special place in Richard Strauss’corpus of Lieder. For the first time, he composed an entire set of songs on texts by a single poet, collecting them into one opus that was also to appear in print. Some of the numbers in it, like “Zueignung,†“Die Nacht,†and “Allerseelen,†are among the most popular Strauss songs of all time, but the entire cycle with its well-planned structure is also worthy of closer examination and performance. The aspiring composer quite consciously aligns himself with the tradition ranging from Schubert to Wolf, choosing the highly Romantic subject of unrequited love and illuminating its most diverse facets. The first edition of op. 10, published in 1887 for high voice, was followed during the composer's lifetime by transposed versions for middle and low registers, something that was then to become the rule for all of Strauss's songs. Henle has returned to these tried and tested transpositions for its own Urtext edition for low voice, so as to offer this wondrous song-cycle to all voice ranges.

During a concert tour through California in early 1920, Prokofiev composed five songs with piano accompaniment and textless voice parts, which appeared in print as Five Songs without Words op. 35 and with a dedication to the soprano Nina Koshetz. The quasi-instrumental conception of the work as vocalises accompanied by piano suggested an arrangement for violin and piano, which the composer then indeed undertook in 1925. Enriched with octave transpositions, double stops, harmonics and pizzicati, the violin part of the five pieces gained an enormous variety of additional expressive possibilities. No wonder the Five Melodies op. 35a today number among the Russian master's most popular chamber music works! Henle is publishing them for the first time as an Urtext edition based on all available sources. Simon Morrison, a true Prokofiev specialist, contributed the preface.

Schubert's 5th Symphony is sunny, Viennese, scored originally for small classical orchestra and positively effervesces with ideas. Stuart Johnson has taken the theme from the 2nd movement - Andante con moto - and brought this gem within the reach of technically less advanced players without diminishing the musical quality. Schubert's delightful 5th Symphony in Bb Major, written in 1816, is a miniature, perhaps consciously avoiding comparison with Beethoven's Fifth, written just 10 years earlier. Schubert's Great was to come later! The work is sunny, Viennese, scored originally for small classical orchestra and positively effervesces with ideas. Stuart Johnson has taken the theme from the 2nd movement - Andante con moto - and brought this gem within the reach of technically less advanced players without diminishing the musical quality.

Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the premiere; the 'child prodigy' Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Leonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known. As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Leonard. The letter informs us that the composer invited Leonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Leonard. The recently discovered proofs reveal how Leonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show how Leonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown. It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn's approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter's correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Leonard's playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany. This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice. The editor, Clive Brown, is an acknowledged expert on Romantic performance practice.

As well as the Mass in B minor, there are four further, shorter mass compositions by Bach, the so-called Lutheran or Kyrie-Gloria masses. Despite their high musical qualities, they are often overshadowed by other church works by Bach. With their six-movement structure (up to the Cum sancto spiritu) they had their specific liturgical position in church services of the time of Bach. The masses largely comprise parodies, with the original music mainly taken from cantatas which Bach sometimes considerably reworked in his well-known style according to the new context of the work. Ulrich Leisinger has edited the four works for Carus in new critical editions. Score and part available separately - see item CA.3123500.

Elgar's Serenade for Strings was composed in 1892 and represents the first of his works with which the 35-year-old composer was truly satisfied. Whether, as often claimed, it derives from three pieces for strings from 1888 can no longer be ascertained, since only the titles of those pieces âSpring Songâ, âElegyâ and âFinaleâ, have come down to us. However, these titles would also characterise the movements of the Serenade surprisingly well. Posterity shares Elgar's positive assessment to the present day: the Serenade op. 20 is not only one of his most popular compositions, but is among the most frequently played works in the string-orchestra literature. Edited by British Elgar specialist Rupert Marshall-Luck, this classic now appears in Henle Urtext as conducting score, performance material and handy study edition.
