Gerald Near bases this setting of the Evening Canticles on the chant intonation 'Tonus Peregrinus' (the pilgrim) , so named because of its traditional association with Psalm 113--When the Israelites came out of Egypt ... Mr. Near's sensitive text declamation is heard immediately in the opening soprano passage of the Magnificat while the balance and unity between the choir and organ reflects his sense of musical completeness. The Nunc Dimittis may be effectively used separately as an anthem for the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple.

Resurrexi is based entirely upon Gregorian chant alternating between pure chant and polyphonic choral settings in which the chant is used freely. The work is divided into four sections which describe the appearance of the Angel of the Resurrection, and three post-Resurrection appearances of Christ. Each section concludes with a motet which serves as a summation of what has gone before. The music of the opening Alleluia returns in the final chorus, where it is transformed modally and combined with the beautiful ancient chant, Veni, Creator Spiritus..
