A characteristic of many Russian folksongs is the emotion that they contain - sometimes exceptionally fierce, sometimes, in contrast, resigned and melancholic. This makes the music captivating and gives it its special, distinctive atmosphere. The same can also be said for From Russia with Love, in which Roland Kernen has made use of three beautiful Russian love songs. In the cheerful and stirring Kalinka, the singer tells of a girl whom he fell head over heals in love with, so much so that she is always on his mind. Lutshje Bulo is the story of a man who wants to break up with his girlfriend and in Otschi Tschornije attention is focused on a dangerous woman who can seduce many menwith her piercing black eyes. Kenmerkend voor veel Russische volksliedjes is de emotie die erin ligt. Ze maakt deze muziek boeiend en creëert een bijzondere sfeer. Zo ook in From Russia with Love, waarin Roland Kernen drie liefdesliedjes verwerkte. From Russia with Love di Roland Kernen s’iscrive in questa tradizione e riprende tre canti d’amore russi: Kalinka, Lutshje Bulo e Otschi Tschornije.

... those who know Bredenbach's Lustige Lieder, know that his music isn't always easy, which it doesn't have to be! He [Bredenbach] knows what children are capable of ... The piece is fun: first, because the story is well-known; second, because the melodies are original and witty (children have an excellent sense for why the melody must be angular in certain places, and why an exploding pipe cannot be set in decending major thirds), third, because hymns, folksongs, and children's songs are hidden everywhere, which strengthen and underline the comedy or joke in each situation ... Simon Laks (1901-1983), who moved from Warsaw to Paris in 1926 at the age of 25, belonged to the large group of composers from Central and Eastern European countries who went down in 20th-century music history as the “École de Parisâ€. Slavic temperament amalgamated in their music with French esprit, the folklore of their native countries combined with the stylistic elements of neoclassicism and jazz typical of the time. As a member of the “Association of Young Polish Musiciansâ€, Laks quickly made his way into French musical life. However, his career was ended with the beginning of World War 2 due to the collaboration of the Vichy government with Nazi Germany. Internment in 1941 was followed by deportation to Auschwitz in 1942. Laks survived the Shoah as a member and later leader of a camp band in Birkenau, which he testified to in his moving book Music in Auschwitz. After the traumatic experiences, Laks did not return to regular compositional activity until the 1960s, producing an opera, songs, and chamber music works, some of which were awarded important composition prizes. At the peak of this optimistic creative phase, he composed incidental music for Peretz Hirschbein's famous Yiddish comedy Dem Schmids Techter (The Blacksmith's Daughters), which premiered in New York in 1918, for a new production of the play at the Théâtre de'lÂ’Entrepôt in Paris. Along with Prokofiev's Overture on Hebrew Themes and Shostakovich's cycle From Yiddish (Jewish) Folk Poetry, it is one of the most significant 20th-century explorations of art music with Jewish folklore – homage to a culture irreparably destroyed. From the original score, Holger Groschopp compiled two suites, for violoncello and piano and piano solo, that capture the essence of Lak's enchanting drama music. The premiere recording of the suites with Holger Groschopp and Adele Bitter was awarded the Opus Klassik 2023 in the category Editorial Achievement of the Year.

From 1906 on Béla Bartók was collecting folksongs on a regular basis. It was in 1907, during his first collecting trip to Transylvania, that he jotted down those three melodies in Gyergyóteker patak, Cs k, which he both provided with piano accompaniment (From Gyergyó) and arranged for solo piano (Three Hungarian Folksongs from Cs k) in the same year. The melodies were played by a ''sixty-year old man'' on a peasant flute. In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications, and publishing some further, new transcriptions that fulfill in every respectthe strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.

Gitarre Spelen is a German language guitar method for children split across three books Experienced tutor, and author of this series, Andreas Schumann points out that the average age of students is getting younger, as children are starting their lessons sooner than ever before. Because of this he has designed an approach to teaching the guitar with the needs of younger players in mind. For instance, the melodies here are in small manageable chunks and it is an easy method which considers the smaller hands being used. It is also important that they play tunes they know and so international folksongs and nursery rhymes have been included here. Book One features Tom and Lena, two children who will help guide students through and enable them to have as much fun as possible! They give tips, suggestions, advice and directions throughout to ensure the student is always kept informed! This is an enjoyable and practical group learning method that encourages and adds confidence whilst covering the important basics, rudiments and techniques needed to play the guitar including fingerstyle and first chords.
