None other than Johann Sebastian Bach arranged Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s well-known Stabat Mater for performances at Leipzig’s Thomaskirche. Bach replaced the old liturgical sequence of the original with a rhymed version in German of the 51st Psalm, Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden (God, annull all my transgression) (available from Carus under Carus 35.302).Both Pergolesi’s composition and Bach’s arrangement have only two solo vocal parts (soprano and alto). As early as the 18th century, the tradition developed of performing individual movements of the Stabat mater chorally, since some movements literally demand a choir. The presented edition now also offers this possibility for Bach’s version Tilge, Höchster, meine Sünden. Jörn Bartels has created choral versions for verses 3, 5-7 and 10-15 by adding male voices based on the basso continuo as well as Bach’s original viola part.- Bach's adaptation of the poignant Stabat Mater by Pergolesi- Suitable for small choirs and ensembles. Score available separately - see item CA.3530200.

Hymn tune by Giovanni Pergolesi Giovanni Pergolesi's original work has been set here for 3-4 octaves of bells and optional 3 octaves of handchimes and keyboard. The keyboard picks up the sixteenth-note figures while the bells ring the melody backed up by chordal texture. The handchimes part is made up of quarter and half-note chords, however, there are some chords tied across the bar line. Level two pieces with this full sound should be welcome by directors of those choirs.

Some few months after returning to Naples from Rome, where he had gone to follow the premiere of L'Olimpiade at the Teatro Tordinona during the 1735 carnival season, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi -- notwithstanding the quickened pace of the disease that would soon bring his brief life to a close -- presented the public with a new work, Il Flaminio, a commedeja pe' mmuseca set to a libretto by Gennarantonio Federico. The opera was staged as the second of season that fall at the Teatro Nuovo sopra Toledo (one of three traditional venues, together with the Teatro dei Fiorentini and the Teatro della Pace, dedicated to the production of opere buffe), where it met with a generally favorable reception. The edition includes a historical Introduction, a description of all the sources considered and a Commentary with critical notes and information related to specific problems of performance practice.

In Naples, late in the year 1734, Giovanni Battista Pergolesi obtained a commission from a brotherhood of noblemen to write a new setting of the Stabat mater text in order to replace the work of Alessandro Scarlatti, who had passed away in 1725. This work, too, was to be limited to two vocal parts, which reflects the intimate character of this devotional work. Just a few years after its creation, Pergolesi's Stabat mater setting became known throughout the entire musical world, regardless of all religious boundaries. No other musical work was printed and copied more often in the 18th century than the Stabat mater. The present edition is based on the autograph, which contains corrections and deletions. It seems to have been hastily transcribed from sketches intended for the copyist's use. The publisher thus faced a particularly challenging task here.

Based on “Ritorni al nostro cor la bella pace” from Salustia by Giovanni Battista Pergolesi (1710-1736), “O Sing This Festive Day!” is a majestic opening number for school programs or church services. Incorporating optional hand drum and trumpet (parts are included in the choral), it is also a good supplement for music history studies. “O Sing This Festive Day!” gives singers an excellent taste of Baroque music without being difficult to learn.

The Missa in F of 1734 for two or four choirs is probably Pergolesi's most important work for choir and orchestra. The nickname Missa Romana was added later in reference to a performance given in Rome during Pergolesi's lifetime. This Urtext edition presents the work for the first time in the four-choir version that Pergolesi wrote for the above mentioned performance in Rome.Choirs III and IV are reproduced in smaller type and are added to the version for double choir in order to intensify the overall sound. This allows the work to be performed not only with two choirs but also in the delightful enlarged version for four choirs.Rounding off the edition are an informative Foreword (Eng/Ger) and a Critical Commentary (Eng).- First publication with choirs III and IV- Can be performed with both two or four choirs- Idiomatic, well-presented piano reduction.
