Als Alexander III. 1881 den Zarenthron bestieg, begann fur die russische Oper eine neue, oft als Goldenes Zeitalter' bezeichnete Epoche, in der Cajkovskij zum fuhrenden Komponisten aufstieg. Die vom Zaren eingeleitete Reform der Kaiserlichen Theater, zu denen seinerzeit in Petersburg italienische und russische Oper, Ballett sowie russisches, deutsches und franzosisches Drama gehorten, fuhrte zu einer nachhaltigen Umstrukturierung der Theaterhierarchie. Die russische Oper holte in kurzester Zeit Entwicklungen nach, wie sie fur die Pariser Grand opera' charakteristisch waren. In 2012, 1024, and 2016 under the title 'Viola Project,' I invited violists and composers to the Hochschule fur Musik und Tanz Koln [College for Music and Dance in Cologne] with the objective: 'Be there when it is composed! Be there when it is rehearsed!' Composers write for violists - and violists can influence this. The old hierarchy 'superordinate composer' and 'subordinate performer' are increasingly giving way to a new partnership in which composers and performers recognize that they need each other and work towards the same goal in mutual respect and exchange. This partnership was used and practiced in the viola project. Sometimes I got hot all over when together we tried out one draft after another. Whether then that can go well? It was the Paris premiere in 1981 of Messages of the Late R. V. Troussova that brought the world's attention to the music of György Kurtág (born 1926). The spectrum of these feminine poems in Russian with their cruel sincerity ranges from nostalgia to rebellion, from melancholy to despair, and these extremes are fully conveyed by Kurtág's music. The score published in 1982 is now issued in a revised edition, with a fresh engraving. Péter Eötvös said about the essence of Kurtág's musical notation: ''Kurtág's scores are special because the performing instructions regarding tempo, tone-color, note-hierarchy and dynamics appear in them as if they were precise comments on aninterpretation existing in his imagination. Kurtág's idiosyncratic notation is unusually brave even today, or rather it indicates that he has found the most appropriate method of notation for his own musical style which, in a certain sense, forces performers to accommodate to his music and to that end widen their repertoire of expression. The powerful effect of Kurtág's art unfolds of its own accord when his works are played with sensitivity and openness to their special demands, and a musician who senses this becomes a dedicated performer of this music.''.

Paavo Korpijaakko's (b. 1977) guitar sonata Kimberley was composed in 2006 and dedicated to Petri Kumela. It is Korpijaakko's fist piece for the guitar, and the composers gives credit to the commissioner, who untiringly and long-sufferingly solved the challenges posed by the musical ideas and conjured forth timbral shades. Including a tribute to Debussy, a playful scherzo and some shameless flirting with a flamenco the four movement sonata arrives at a spectacular conclusion.

Korpijaakko studied at the Tampere Conservatory 1997–2007, majoring in composition from 2001 onwards. For most of the time he was a pupil of Jouni Kaipainen, but he was also taught by Juhani Nuorvala and Hannu Pohjannoro. Korpijaakko stresses the importance of harmony, resonant material and harmonic hierarchy, by which he means harmony as a fundamental progressive element of the piece. His aim in handling his motifs is to use his material sparingly. In this respect he specifically wants to be a kindred spirit to Beethoven. Everything that will later appear in the work must be derived from the core thematic and harmonic elements – or whatever one likes to call them. Most important is, however, to create a steady stream of interesting music.
