Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783) is considered the most successful composer from the middle third of the 18th century. He spent the most important and longest portion of his professional musical career as Music Director at the Dresden Court of Friedrich August II. The fact that Hasse was offered this prestigious position was due to the success of his opera Cleofide, which was performed in Dresden in September 1731 - still during the reign of August the Strong - with his wife, Faustina (nee Bordoni), singing the female lead. In connection with the first edition of Cleofide (Johann Adolf Hasse, Werke, Vol. I/1, Stuttgart, 2008) the editor, Zenon Mojzysz, undertook extensive research of the cultural-historical environment surrounding this opera. With reference to numerous original sources, in the present volume the circumstances which led to the composer's appointment at the Dresden Court and to the performance there of Cleofide will be brought to light.

Jupiter Hymn is a beautiful, easy-to-play arrangement from the wonderful fourth movement of the seven-part orchestral suite The Planets<(I> by Gustav Holst: Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity. Holst took inspiration for this suite—one of his best-known works—from the astrological aspect of the planets rather than their astronomical or physical characteristics. Holst wrote The Planets at the beginning of the 20th century, at a time when certain features of the work, such as exotic time signatures (5/4), dissonances and unusual instrumentation were uncommon. Jupiter Hymn ist eine schöne, einfach spielbare Bearbeitung aus dem glanzvollen vierten Satz der siebenteiligen Orchester-Suite The Planets von Gustav Holst: Jupiter - The Bringer of Jollity.

Jason Max Ferdinand's book Teaching With Heart is the first book to directly help us address the societal issues in our choral rehearsals. Not attempting to separate the music from social issues, this new tool in the classroom uses musical examples to address uncomfortable topics and hopefully 'open minds and hearts.' Built to ask singers to read, watch, listen and then to respond and discuss, this resource has been developed with the help of nine outstanding contributors and ten composers and arrangers. I strongly urge you to take a look at this new resource for your classroom. --Jo-Michael Scheibe, D.M.A. Professor, Department of Choral and Sacred Music Conductor, University of Southern California Thornton Chamber Singers Teaching With Heart is a timely and relevant resource that offers a well-crafted, research-based approach to choral music education. Llio was composed during Berlioz's stay in Italy in 1831. In April of that year he set out from Rome, where he held a scholarship as winner of the Prix de Rome, and travelled as far as Nice on hearing that his fiancee Camille Moke had rejected him in favour of another suitor. He had intended to return to Paris to exact revenge, but then he abandoned his plan and instead spent three weeks in Nice, returning in stages to Rome. On this return journey he conceived the idea of a semi-theatrical work that combined music and monologues to express the idea of returning to life after a profound traumatic experience. The composition was finished in Rome in Iune 1831. In the spring of 1832, while staying with his parents in Dauphin, Berlioz copied the orchestral and vocal parts, and the work was first performed in conjunction with the Symphonie fantastique at the Paris Conservatoire on 9 December 1832. It was heard again three weeks later and again on 3 May 1835. While designated as the second part of the Episode in the Life of an Artist, Lelio can never- theless be performed on its own, without the Symphonie fantastique to precede it.

With the publication of Volume 11 in November 1999, Werner Breig's fundamentally new scholarly concept begins to make itself felt more strongly. All editorial differences aside: with respect to their contents, Volumes 9-11 can be neatly categorized as the Tristan letters volumes, the genesis of each act of Tristan und Isolde can be assigned to one specific chronological section. Wagner was working on the first act (beginnung his correspondance with Mathilde Wesendonck at the same time) in Zurich during the period of the letters compiled in Volume 9. Volume 10 plays in Venice and documents the origin of the second act. And in Volume 11, the reader can relive the completion of the epoch-making stage work in the letters Wagner sent from Lucerne. Concerning this Volume we have obtained the following fax by the English Wagner expert Stewart Spencer, who wittily praises Werner Breig's fundamental new concept: There is a general problem of reviewing such magnificent volumes. They are the yardstick by which all other writings on Wagner will be judged. It is like sending someone to inspect the standard metre rule in Paris and asking them to review it. All one can say is that it exists and that it is in a class of its own. I'd like to congratulate you on its publication and thank you most warmly for picking up this edition. The numerous, mostly religious works of the Bohemian composer Andreas Hammerschmidt are composed with great craftmanship, and sound full and catchy. They were composed for 17th century village churches, in which they were sung by the congregation—and they are still familiar and popular today. Robert van Beringen took the advent hymn Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Gates and created this beautiful arrangement. The collection of the main solo songs by Armas Jarnefelt was accelerated by a donation made by his son, Arvi, in Stockholm to the University of Helsinki: dozens of previously unpublished manuscripts thus found their way home to Finland. Sweden was father Jarnefelt's second home, since he spent a couple of decades as conductor of the Royal Opera in Stockholm. He concentrated almost exclusively on solo songs, the reason no doubt being that his father-in-law was Jean Sibelius, a master of large-scale form. Jarnefelt's vocal lyrics spring from the National-Romantic ethos nurtured on the archaic rune-singing of the national epic, the Kalevala, and the distant lands of Karelia. The folk-like elements of his youthful songs were in time joined by Impressionistic and in places even Expressionistic timbres. This collection is edited by Matti Tuloisela. In 1990 a short score of Strauss's late masterpiece Metamorphosen was discovered in Switzerland and acquired by the Bavarian State Library in Munich. It is headed 'Metamorphosen. Andante (für 2 Violinen, 2 Bratschen, 2 Celli[,] Contrabass) Richard Strauss'. This gives rise to the assumption that the composer had clearly conceived the piece as scored for seven strings and then changed his mindon receiving a commission from Paul Sacher to write a work for a larger string group. The short score bears the date 31 March 1945 at the end, the full score for twenty-three strings having already been started on 13 March. Rudolf Leopold, concert cellist and professor of cello at the University of Music, Graz, prepared the septet performing version of Metamorphosen, of which the study score was published in 1996. He explains that, for the most part, the 23-part version consists of doublings. “In the realisation of the 'original version' for string sextet and double bass I have made use of both the short score and the final score so that the complete tonal image appears in a chamber music format whilst retaining certain interesting details from the short score (for example the original closing modulation).â€.

The Baroque is a period of frills and ornaments, wether in architecture, painting or music. An easy melody passes through a variety of arrangements. From brass quintet and different tutti parts, all the sections are in action. Fortified by a drum set and an (optional) electric bass, the piece is given a modern touch and becomes more acceptable to the audience. A follow-up to Rondo Romantica, this piece was composed in December 1997.
