The title refers to the way aspects of nature resonate within us, and the sense of completeness we find when we connect in this way. 'When Rivers Flow' is a simple melody that sits on a rippling ostinato figure with various twists and turns in the piece. 'Free As A Bird' again is a simple melody that glides above a changing arpeggiated landscape of harmony. Both pieces are aimed at the developing intermediate player.

Jörg Widmann, an internationally sought-after soloist and professor of clarinet at the Freiburg Musikhochschule, displays the exquisite refinement of contemporary clarinet sound in 'Fünf Bruchstücke' (already published) for clarinet and piano (KLB 54) and in the present 'Fantasie' for solo clarinet. While noise, as a means of expression, is given much attention in 'Fünf Bruchstücke','Fantasie' is largely based on the usual Romantic melodious sound, though this time with ironic side trips into dance, klezmer and jazz music, the clarinet's equivalent of light music. “'Fantasie' for solo clarinet is my first real piece for my own instrument, the clarinet. With its eccentric virtuosity and its cheerful, ironic fundamental character, it reflects the experience with Stravinsky's 3 Pieces for solo clarinet of 1919 and the tonal innovations which did not appear in music before Carl Maria von Weber's notation for the clarinet, and takes them further in anew way. It is a little imaginary scene uniting the dialogues of different people in close proximity in the spirit of the commedia dell'arte.” - Jörg Widmann ...on the interpretation: “It would be important to take the title completely literally – which is why the performer should of course play the piece with imagination. The most important information on the structure: the complete absence of bar lines – whenever the piece is played to me by students or other persons, I am always pleased about the player's own ideas and about the fact that the musical text is taken literally and seriously, with all its dynamic and articulation marks, and yet filled with life and imagination. What I always notice, however, is that the rhythmic fast pulse part is often played like an étude, rather than with imagination. What is most important to me, personally, is to take pleasure in making tonal distinctions, even despite the strict timing. Use your imagination and enjoy playing my 'Fantasie'!” - Jörg Widmann.

Originally scored for brass and percussion, Panoramic Fanfare by Tyler S. Grant was performed by members of the Dallas Wind Symphony and the Greater Dallas Youth Orchestra as a winning composition in the DWS's Call for Fanfares competition. While still remaining true to the original, Tyler has expanded the thematic material in a way that exhibits greater harmonic color and stunning panoramic imagery. (2:00).

The Great Nebula in Orion is as much a piece of musical theater as it is an extended art song for two singing actors with accompaniment. Louise and Carrie, friends since their student days at Bryn Mawr, meet by chance after not having seen or spoken withone another in nearly seven years. They spend the afternoon at Louise's apartment reminiscing about the past and telling clever stories of their contented and, finally and truthfully, their discontented lives. The women in The Great Nebula in Orion attempt (not always successfully) to sing emotions and sentiments that are important to them. The musical becomes as much a piece about trying to (or learning how to) “sing†as it is about a reunion of two old friends.

The composition, meaning Before We Came to Jagüey, is based on the travelling impressions the composer collected on his way to central Cuba. Jagüey, situated in the Province of Matanzas, is written in a guaguanco-Latin style, which means that special emphasis is placed on the syncopes and off-beats.

I have recently been incredibly inspired by the writings of the great Bengali mystic Rabindranath Tagore, whose monumental collection of poetry Gitanjali won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. This book introduces the reader to a new awareness of the world that surrounds us, deepening the connection between nature and the human spirit that we all yearn for. Verse 69 is particularly joyful and life-affirming: an ecstatic realization of the energies that move in ceaseless ebb and flow through us, our lives, and our natural environment. Each individual line of this verse has a unique character and color, so I have placed each in a key that I feel suits the mood of the text. The constantly flowing ostinati that weave their way throughout are collectively a musical representation of the “stream of life†to which Tagore refers. This flowing line can be found even in the subdued third line of text, which makes reference to the “ocean-cradle of birth and of death.†In similar fashion, the more complex rhythmic cells found within the stream (e.g., measures 21–40) are a product of Tagore’s ecstatic tone. Ultimately this piece is simply meant to be an expression of joy. It is dedicated with great admiration to the commissioning ensemble, the Fort Myers High School Greenwave Singers, and their conductor Matt Koller. This tremendous ensemble is a prime example of choral music education in practice in the United States, and I feel honored to have been given this opportunity to work with them. —Thomas LaVoy.

Adler's new Fanfare was composed in the Summer of 2008 for the Cincinnati University Youth Wind Ensemble, and premiered in March 2010 by that ensemble under the direction of Dr. Ann Porter. The majestic opening gives way to an extended interplay, which the composer has marked as happy and bouncy. Timpani is used sparingly, adding punctuation throughout, joining the ensemble for a rousing finale. For advanced performers.
