Adversity, in any form at any point of our lives, can be absolutely debilitating mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. In the midst of hard times, it is difficult to imagine what our lives will look like on the other side of the adversity we are facing. Yet so many of us carry on, move forward, and rise above determined to never be defined by our circumstances. For some their personal faith, support from family, or relationship to friends provides the necessary fuel for the resilience they need to rise above adversity. It is amazing when a group of people are able to come together to overcome a common obstacle. With this in mind, I put to music that spirit of rising above for the Liberty High School Band and their director Michael Summers. Northeast Ohio has seen its share of prosperity and significant times of hardship along many different fronts. I still see resilient leaders, community members, and educators like Mike who continue to fight for what is best and what is right. The debut of this work, like so many other things, was interrupted in the spring of 2020. Now on the precipice of a new beginning for many band programs across the country, all of us in instrumental music education must summon resilience to ensure our groups recover, grow and flourish. The rising major second represents us all taking the first step forward in good and difficult times. The adversity (tension) arrives in various ways harmonically throughout the work. Tension can make us lose sense of where we are on our journey and rob us of our ability to imagine getting through our current situation. But I am reminded that not all tension is bad. Given enough time and enough resolution, we can often make sense of the adversity. We can recognize that the adversity taught us something about ourselves we didn't know, or perhaps challenged us to grow in a way we didn't think possible. Either way, it does not happen unless we possess resilience. I thank you in advance for your support of this music and wish you and your group the very best moving forward with Resilience. | A Little Violin Music in Memory of Elijah McClain Merion Music
Chamber Music Violin SKU: PR.144407380 Composed by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. ...(+)
Chamber Music Violin SKU: PR.144407380 Composed by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich. Performance Score. 4 pages. Duration 4 minutes. Merion Music #144-40738. Published by Merion Music (PR.144407380). ISBN 9781491133903. UPC: 680160683475. 9 x 12 inches. In her powerful Foreword to the music, violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins has written: “There are great works which give voice to important moments for generations, and this is one of them.†The tragedy of Elijah McClain’s murder has moved us all, and for many musicians the image of this gentle young man playing his violin for kittens at an animal shelter has added a poignant extra layer. Zwilich was a professional violinist before turning exclusively to composing, and A LITTLE VIOLIN MUSIC is a memorial from the heart of one violinist to another. [THESE NOTES MAY NOT BE REPRODUCED OUTSIDE OF THE PUBLICATION; OK TO QUOTE A BIT AND GIVE AUTHOR CREDIT]We often research important pieces of music to gain some glimpse into the mind of the composer by understanding the times in which a piece was written. The times that brought this piece into being, 2020, has been a year like no other in our lifetimes. With the suffering of a once in a century pandemic raging in ever higher waves, and millions of people around the world confined to their homes with a shared attention span for the first time in generations, we watched in horror the 8 minute 46 second killing of George Floyd, a man previously unknown to us, but now unwillingly joining a long list of names of unarmed African Americans killed by police. The anguished backlash of citizens around the world, from Japan to New Zealand to Germany to the United States, of every age, color, and creed, has rallied for weeks and months on end to demand enough and that “Black Lives Matter.â€And yet, in the midst of it all is an America starkly divided against itself with some defiantly pushing back, emboldened by authoritarian-style government actions against its own citizens occurring all over the country. It is against this backdrop that we ever had a chance to know of Elijah McClain. Here in quarantine I sometimes practice my scales in front of the news. And one day the mirror image looking back at me from the screen was a slight young man, warm, affable brown eyes, and also a violin under his chin. The newsreel-style camera pan so familiar now, I knew the only reason we were gazing upon his unfamous face was that he too had been killed by police nearly a year before. But the revelation of it in the broadcast hit me particularly hard.Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, who is not only one of the great composers of our time, is also a dear friend, and called me the next day, also deeply saddened by the news. It was from Ellen that I learned that Elijah used to play for the kittens at the local animal shelter so they wouldn’t be lonely. This kind, gentle soul was aggressively taken into police custody while saying, “I am an introvert. Please respect the boundaries that I am speaking... I’m going home.†He was never seen alive again.Ellen and I spoke of the sadness and the injustice of this several times. She felt a powerful calling to contribute something in a statement and the result is the piece you now hold in your hands. I am deeply honored to be the dedicatee of the piece, to have worked together with Ellen on some of the final details, and to pen this score note. As an invited alumna of the Eastman School of Music, I premiered the work for their virtual event on Diversity and Inclusion. Each time I play it, there is a persistent lump in my throat because Ellen has captured something poignant and powerful here. There are great works which give voice to important moments for generations, and this is one of them. We humbly offer this piece in memory of Elijah McClain.Foreword © 2021 by Kelly Hall-Tompkins. Used by permission. $9.50 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.114423770). UPC: 680160688579. When RoseWind Duo’s Clifford Leaman and Scott Herring commissioned me for Silver Linings, we could not have anticipated that we would be in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic when I composed the piece. In the early summer of 2020, when the three of us met virtually to discuss possible topics, we had all been in lockdown for several months; the causes and effects of the lockdown were at the forefront of our discussion. In themidst of daily tragedies, I had been seeing news stories using the words “silver lining†to describe unexpectedly positive situations arising from our global situation, ranging from small effects (i.e. people having time to work on projects they never could get around to doing) to global ramifications (resurging animal populations in areas where they’re no longer challenged for space with humanity).Silver Linings consists of two movements. Groundhog Day, the first movement, is slow and brooding. It embodies the strong feeling of déjà vu that so many of us experienced early on into lockdown, as we seemed to live the same day repeatedly with minor variances to our schedules. There are two main musical gestures: the first opens the piece as a slow, ascending minor chord which is a representation of uncertainty, and the secondis a falling minor scale. These gestures depict how our lives were reduced to the basic building blocks of life – wake up, eat, work, eat, sleep – as our daily activities and livelihoods were suddenly knocked down. These same two gestures are utilized in the energetic second movement, Making Lemonade, except that they are spun around to reveal their silver linings: the minor chord falls to sound centered and decisive, and the minor scale rises as it bubbles with activity. Among the seeds of despair are also foundseeds of hope, and the saxophone and marimba explore this hopefulness with great vigor and excitement. $33.99 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

Orchestra (Study Score) SKU: HL.49046988 Lyric Trilogy After Maurice Maeterlinck Study Score, French. Composed by Aribert Reimann. Edition Schott. Classical. Softcover. 280 pages. Duration 5400 seconds. Schott Music #ED23491. Published by Schott Music (HL.49046988). ISBN 9781705174333. UPC: 842819115281. 8.25x11.75x0.695 inches. SYNOPSIS Aribert Reimann's 'Trilogie lyrique' is based on three plays by Maurice Maeterlinck: In L'Intruse, a family is sitting at the table with their blind grandfather. They are waiting for the doctor to arrive and tend to his daughter who is lying ill in bed after having given birth: her new-born son has not yet made a single sound. The old man senses that something is wrong due to the uneasy atmosphere in the room. Who is sitting in our midst? he asks. He is the only one who cansee the presence of death. Interieur: Once again a family is gathered round the table in the evening, but this time we observe the action from outside, looking through the window with the grandfather and a stranger: no sound can be heard. Outside the house, the stranger reports that the eldest daughter has drowned and that he has pulled her out of the river. Although the corpse is already being carried through the village to the family, the grandfather cannot bring himself to destroy this idyll. La Mort de Tintagiles: The young Tintagiles is told a story about a mysterious castle and the aged queen who has all potential heirsto the throne murdered. His siblings sense that Tintagiles has been summoned to the castle to be murdered, but nobody openly expresses this fact. It is the sinister messengers of death from the interludes, now visible as the queens servants, who ful?l her demand and snatch the sleeping boy from his sisters'arms. Commentary 'In comparison with his Medea for example with its stormy outbreaks of emotion and violence, Reimann's score is worked in an impressive refinement of sound. It begins with rumbling, hesitating and expressive music in the first section, demanding highly ingenious sound effects from the lower strings including tapping and faltering glissandos in its noisy expression of mortal fear. Inthe second part, the woodwind formation plays at times almost in chamber music fashion and is then suddenly painfully shrill. The third part luxuriates and rages in its rich, full orchestration. The manner in which Reimann displays his mastery in textural shading, the invention of sounds welling up and fading away, the rhythmic and melodic capacity of suffering and the music's inner violence are all utterly compelling.'(Wolfgang Schreiber, Opernwelt, November 2017). $72.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 24 hours - In Stock

A copse is a thicket of trees and bushes that may be found in a meadow or in open land. In England, a copse will often be found on a moor. A copse needs a source of water that is usually a stream, small river or pond. A copse has abundant plant and animal life because it provides the perfect habitat and shelter for moisture loving plants, insects, small mammals, rodents, reptiles, and birds. If you were walking through the copse in the midst of willow trees, bluebells and march marigolds, you would see beautiful butterflies, dragonflies and moths. You might see a frog or toad jumping on the banks of the pond and you would hear the call of numerous birds. Ornithologists often spend many hours watching and counting birds in and around a copse. Migrating birds such as geese and herons may also be spotted at certain times of the year. If you sit very quietly, you might catch sight of a red fox, a rabbit or squirrel. A copse is a happy place to spend an afternoon or to go for a walk. Perhaps you will get to visit a nature preserve near your home where you can observe the wonderful world of the woodland wild life that can be found in abundance in a copse. To assist you in learning some of the techniques that you need to be able to use when playing Willow-Wood Copse, you may wish to work on the studies that accompany the piece. Zibuokle Martinaityte tells about the background of Aletheia (2022) for mixed choir (SSSSAAAATTTTBBBB):“Aletheia is variously translated from Greek as 'unconcealedness', 'revealing' or 'unclosedness'. It is uncovering of the Truth - the one we are afraid to face, the truth that can only be expressed directly through the pre-verbal communication. How do you find words for the horrors of the war, for all unimaginable global atrocities? How do you even allow yourself to feel it out? Solely through art, through music that offer a safe space and a formalized framework for processing these accumulated complex emotions and sharing them with others in a moment. This piece has no verbal text and it is based on various combinations of vowels and consonants, thus connecting us on a deeper level through the immediate emotional experience. The work is commissioned by the Lithuanian National Radio (LRT Klasika) The war in Ukraine in spring of 2022 had an impact on all of us and shattered my deeply rooted Lithuanian identity. When the freedomis threatened and innocent people are dying, it is hard to make sense out of the reality.Yet there is poetry even in the worst nightmares. I was imagining that the only instrument people have even in situations of destruction, in the midst of the war, is their VOICE. It brought back memories of my youth when 'Singing revolution' was taking place in the Baltic countries. Human voice was the only weapon that people used to express their determination for freedom and independence. Voice is our first and the very last instrument we have in our lifetime. Thinking in these terms brings almost a sacred dimension to the voice as an expression of the life itself - from the very first baby's scream until the last breath and whisper.†Duration c. 15' The works of New York -based Lithuanian composer Zibuokle Martinaityte (b. 1973) have been lauded as breathtaking and profoundly moving. The Rite of Spring premiered that evening in the midst of a riotinspired by the overwhelming primitivism both onstage and in the score. Subtitled “Picturesof Pagan Russia,†the ancient scenes were evoked using contemporary musical innovations, shattering expectations of a more traditional Ballet Russe production. How was an ancient ritual of sacrifice to the earth to be scored? The unevolved pesantecharacter of a village gathering was portrayed by odd time signatures and accents. Melodieswere geometrically woven as dissonant pastorales with grace-notes mimicking gutturalbreaks in primal voices. Instruments were orchestrated against the grain, straining soundsinto unrecognizable timbres. And just like the dancers on stage, musicians were organizedinto alternating groups often clashing with one another.One-hundred plus years later, the music still incites the senses. Published by Theodore Presser Company (PR.47600137L). UPC: 680160637157. 11x17 inches. This piece, dedicated to the memory of a heroic feat, does not desire to be classed as a Symphonic Poem in the generally accepted sense of this term. It does not attempt to picture, or to strictly follow, the various mechanical and realistic phases of this heroic adventure although, on the other hand, it does not entirely avoid allusion to such realistic phenomena as are characteristic of and inseperable from the nature of this adventure and the technical means of its realization. The composer's main object, however, was to try to express in sound the emotional phases of an adventure that might be called a prototype of modern romance; to touch upon its human aspect and its ethical meaning, not only in the relation to the individual, but to humanity in general. To the individual, the venturing Hero, refer the opening phrases; the sinister aspect of a bold inspiration at its first manifestation. To his human environments, his character and conquering spirit, refer certain lyrical as well as martial and ehical themes. According to the nature of the venture, the clash of motoric forces and that of an indomitable spirit with the threatening elements presented themselves for musical consideration as well as the plausible uncertainty of the outcome, the increasing conficence and the final victory, and triumphant victory itself. And as emotion in its purest and most intense form reverts to the primitive, the composer thought it not amiss to make fragmentary use of the anthems of two nations, thus symbolizing the appeal from soil to soil; an appeal that found its joyous echo in all humanity. And in the midst of the turbulent rejoicing stands the lone figure of the Hero whose daring had materialized the dream of aeons. $85.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

UPC: 785147008729. This incredible group, on their self-titled first recording, melds the finest choral technique with true depth of emotion, creating a not-to-be-missed listening experience. Recorded just days before COVID-19 abruptly altered the semester at Oakwood University and released in the midst of the pandemic, coupled with heightened racial tensions across the U.S. and beyond, The Aeolians seeks to bring hope to so many who are in need. Conductor Jason Max Ferdinand writes, “You, our audience should be provoked, challenged, and leave with optimism—the type of optimism that Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King possessed. We, the Aeolians, are no longer satisfied with solely displaying musical prowess. Coupling hope with mastery could be the combination that produces uncompromising societal transformation. We have programmed this music, hoping to appeal to the mind, but not leaving the heart untouched.†CONTENTS: Forever Music (Hayes) • Smile (arr. Dent) • Promised Land (Burton) • Pilgrim’s Hymn (Dawson) • Examine Me (Dent) • My Soul Hath Found Refuge (Simpson-Currenton) • The Chariot Jubilee (Dett/ed. Ferdinand) • Gospel Train (arr. Burton) • We Remember Them (LaBarr) • We Shall Overcome (arr. ISBN 9788759877579. English. Roses Are Falling - 5 songs for Mezzo-Soprano and Piano by Bent Sorensen (1998) with lyrics by Selima Hill. Programme note: Roses are Falling had its origin in a small opera sketch I created with the English poet Selima Hill in just under a week during an opera workshop in the south of England in the autumn of 1998. After the workshop I was asked to make a song cycle out of the material. The opera sketch begins with a woman and a man sitting alone in a room. They have drawn aside from the rest of a large party and they have just decided to finish their love affair. The other guests at the party come into the room, and amidst the crowd the man leaves the room. The women is leftthere alone among all these inconsequential people: alone, singing her own thoughts and torment. The first three songs were all taken from this part. In the fourth song, which was written late, the text is taken from one of Selima Hill's poetry collections. The fifth and last song comes partly from the beginning of the opera, where the man and the women sit alone (she knows what is coming), partly from the end of the story, where despite the gab in time and space they touch each other with their dreams. His voice is heard as a whisper that merges with hers: He takes me in his arms like the moon that turns and take the evening from the sun. Roses are Falling was premiered in 2000 in London by Lore Lixenberg and Domenic Saunders. $24.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 2 to 3 weeks

SKU: GI.G-VHS-478 Meeting with Brother Roger of Taizé. Composed by Taize. Sacred. VHS. GIA Publications #478. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-VHS-478). The astonishing adventure of Taizé can best be understood when we learn what has marked the life of its founder, Brother Roger. This video, which provides a kind of in-depth encounter with him, has no commentary. It is Brother Roger himself who tells his story and that of Taizé. Intense experiences in childhood, an adolescence marked by doubt and the rediscovery of prayer, the beginnings of a vocation, risks taken in the midst of war during the early years in Taiz?, the beginnings of the community and its deepest inspiration, meetings with Pope John XXIII-these are some of the steps that Brother Roger retraces here. $24.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

For those who trust in God, in the pain of sorrow there is consolation, in the face of despair there is hope, in the midst of death there is life. —Order of Christian Funerals Those who struggle with the inability to conceive, those who know the pain of losing a child before birth, and those who have faced their infant's death at the time of birth know that this season of mourning is often held inside, hidden and unseen. But God does not abandon us. Somehow, on the other side of loss an incredible story of resilience emerges. Bodies, though they are never the same again, heal. Couples try again, adopt, or reimagine. Those who mourn in isolation find not one, not two, but a community of others with whom they can identify. God's silence is not absence, it is the patient listening of a God who knows our grief first-hand, who weeps with us, who holds us as a mother holds her child. Death is never the whole story. The hope of new life surprises, confounds, persists. Of Womb and Tomb: Prayer in Time of Infertility, Miscarriage, and Stillbirth is a resource for individuals, couples, and parish communities who wish to accompany those on their grief journey. Filled with stories, prayers, Scripture, poems, and rituals this book may serve as a guide in creating prayer opportunities in a variety of settings. Together, let us bear witness to the Christian mystery—that new life is born of the womb and of the tomb. This is the printed music collection, which corresponds to the selections found on the recording (CD-1061), offers some ideas for congregational use, but certainly does not exhaust the musical possibilities. This bundle contains one copy of the book (G-9816), music collection (G-9817), and CD (CD-1061). $54.00 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks

SKU: GI.G-7314 Essays on Music and Life. Composed by Edwin E. Gordon. Music Learning Theory (MLT). Instructional. 120 pages. GIA Publications #7314. Published by GIA Publications (GI.G-7314). ISBN 9781579997212. English. Every great thinker and innovator, no matter the depth and breadth of his work, has moments of reflection on the business of living. Although the level of commitment required to take an insight from an “ah-ha!†moment to a fully realized groundbreaking concept is high (some would say, even life-consuming), even in the midst of such an endeavor, there is time to think on the small (and not so small) aspects of what it means to be human, what it means to get along in the world.Edwin E. Gordon is perhaps the world’s principal thinker and researcher in music education. But, as with other great thinkers, Gordon has had many moments of reflection on the business of living. In Whittled Wordscapes, he shares his thoughts on a wide variety of topics, from Money, Athletics, and the Arts, to Mazeltov, from What Is Intelligence? To Yellow Pads and Computers. In this collection of 54 brief essays Gordon shares thoughts and insights that are inspiring, challenging, and always thought-provoking.Whittled Wordscapes is a rare glimpse of a great thinker’s mind as he considers what makes the world tick. As you read, you will discover your own “ah-ha!†moments, and will find yourself pondering what Gordon says long after putting down this fascinating book. $9.95 - See more - Buy onlinePre-shipment lead time: 1 to 2 weeks
