The Advocate is a spirited march that provides melodic opportunities and interesting parts for all sections of the band. Written in standard American march form and style, this original tune is reminiscent of the great marches of Fillmore or King and is perfect for any festival performance. The Advocate is a spirited original march which provides melodic opportunities and interesting parts for all sections of the band.An advocate is someone who pleads a case for another person, specifically an attorney. However, the intent here is the more general meaning, as one who supports a specific cause. Each of us are advocates of many things, positive and negative, as demonstrated by our actions and words. As music educators we advocate for the best experiences, the best opportunities, the best lives for each of our students.

''The title refers to the Biblical Book of Exodus. The biblical words of the song: we will sing unto Yahwe, for He has triumphed gloriously;...'', which the people of Israel chant after passing through the Red Sea serve as the motto of the composition. The formal concept of the piece refers to M. Ravels ''Bolero''. The composer has confirmed in his statements that this reference is fully intentional. ''Exodus'' would be the third - after Ravel and Shostakovich (Symphony No.7) - version of a fascinating crescendo of form, based on one theme or idea obsessively repeated. Its first performance at the Warsaw Autumn Festival in 1981 provoked a tremendous ovation. The audience, at first confused by the continual repetition of the E-major chord (bursts laughter were even heard), was eventually abducted by the force and dynamism of the composition.

To strive for the highest in art - these are the words with which Franz Schubert announced his A flat major Mass in 1828, a work which he designated as Missa solemnis in his autograph. Alone the genesis of the work shows the importance which the composer placed on this work. Schubert wrote the score between 1819 and 1822, an unusually long period of time for him. He later fundamentally revised the mass when he applied for the post of Vice Court Kapellmeister in Vienna, which he did not obtain. After this disappointment, he rejected his original intent of dedicating the mass to the Emperor or Empress. Thanks to Peter Jost's Breitkopf Urtext edition, Schubert's Missa solemnis once again adds its luster to the publisher's catalogue: Breitkopf & Hartel published its final version in the Schubert Gesamtausgabe in 1887. Previously Jost produced an equally exemplarily prepared edition of Schubert's E flat major Mass D 950.Wie immer bei Breitkopf ist das Satzbild der Neuausgabe der Zweitfassung in der Gestalt vorbildlich. 25 easy pieces from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic eras, playable in the first three finger patterns in the first position, for violin pupils from the second year of learning. Apart from lesser known works, this edition also contains many popular pieces, such as themes from Vivaldi's Four Seasons, Handel's Fireworks Music and Water Music, Mozart's Magic Flute or Beethoven's Symphony No. 9. This volume's intention is to grant access to classical masterpieces of concert literature with the help of such easy arrangements and spread the joy of classical music. The approach to the pieces is made easier by the accompanying CD which, on the one hand, offers the opportunity to listen to and get to know the pieces beforehand, and, on the other hand, thanks to the separate piano accompaniments, provides first experience in ensemble playing and conveys the vivid joy of music-making.When the CD was recorded by Prof. Benjamin Bergmann, violin, and Leonid Dorfman, piano, they deliberately decided in favour of moderate tempos to make it easier for the young violinists to play along with the piano part. A treasure trove for auditions at schools and music schools.

BACH-SHARDS was commissioned by the Brentano String Quartet as part of their Art of the Fugue companion-piece project. Ran deliberately stays within the realm of Bach-like vocabulary, altering syntax in ways that add up to something slightly different from the anticipated sum of the parts. The work builds up to a climax that makes the entry point into Bach’s Contrapunctus X seem thoroughly natural. While composing Bach-Shards I found myself gravitating, intuitively and gradually, toward a dual goal. First, though the tension and dissonance inherent in certain moments of Bach’s own maze-like contrapuntal structures could quite easily and naturally lead one into a pungent contemporary terrain, I opted not to stray outside the realm of Bach-like materials and harmonic language. Instead, it was my hope to alter their relationships and context in ways that add up to a something that’s slightly different than the anticipated sum of the parts. A mildly deconstructed Bach, if you will. The other important challenge I set for myself was building up the latter, toccata-like portion of Bach-Shards in a way that would make the entry point of the fugue which it precedes, Contrapunctus X, seem thoroughly natural. It was my intent to have the first fugal entrance feel like a huge and much welcome release of the energy created by my Prelude’s penultimate stretch, with its bravura figurations elaborating on an insistent dominant pedal point.

John Philip Sousa wrote this great march when he was the leader of the Marine band in 1889, and it depicts the experience of a horseman during a bullfight. In a distinctive minor key to start, this is a unique Sousa march. Arranger Andrew Balent has tamed this march down in difficulty without loosing the intent of the original. A nice choice for a warm-up march at contest or festival.

Preface to the Collected EditionOver the span of his composing career, Larry Carrol Pruden (1925-82) completed some 60 works, including music for piano, chamber ensemble, orchestra, stage and film. The scope of the ten-volume Collected Edition incorporates every work that the composer is known to have considered complete, and a very few incomplete works which the editors felt warranted inclusion. The works in the latter category are either virtually complete or have been deemed worthy of inclusion due to the significance that the composer is known to have attached to them.Throughout Pruden's output, whether the music is modest in scale and purely functional (civic fanfares and radio advertising jingles, for example) or more extended and overtly serious in tone (such as the larger works for orchestra and strings), his vivid response to urban society and rural life in New Zealand is revealed. With Douglas Lilburn, John Ritchie and others, Larry Pruden belongs to the earliest generation of New Zealand composers to discover a genuine vernacular, and in his music is reflected the trail-blazing spirit of the pioneers, their passion for creativity and their rebelliousness of spirit. The scores in the Collected Edition are based on Pruden's underlying autograph or holograph manuscripts, which have been consulted extensively throughout the editorial process. Comparison has been made to all extant forms of each title, published and unpublished. In some cases, several variants exist, and the goal has been to determine as far as possible the composer's final intention and to convey this comprehensively in the published score. Emendations have been made to account for the composer's revisions and for certain errors and inconsistencies, and each volume includes a short commentary and editorial notes on the source materials. In consultation with the Estate of Larry Pruden, Promethean Editions appointed an Editorial Panel and an Advisory Panel to oversee publication of the Collected Edition. The role of the Editorial Panel has been to undertake the research into the composer's archival and manuscript materials and to make the necessary editorial decisions and ensure the accuracy of the musical and textual content of the Edition. The Advisory Panel has been responsible for monitoring the overall approach to the project and for ensuring the maintenance of a wider perspective.

My third quartet is laid out in a three-movement structure, with each movement based on an early, middle, and late work of the great American impressionist painter Mary Cassatt. Although the movements are separate, with full-stop endings, the music is connected by a common scale-form, derived from the name MARY CASSATT, and by a recurring theme that introduces all three movements. I see this theme as Mary's Theme, a personality that stays intact while undergoing gradual change. I The Bacchante (1876) [Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania] The painting shows a young girl of Italian or Spanish origin, playing a small pair of cymbals. Since Cassatt was trying very hard to fit in at the French Academy at the time, she painted a lot of these subjects, which were considered typical and universal. The style of the painting doesn't yet show Cassatt's originality, except perhaps for certain details in the face. Accordingly the music for this movement is Spanish/Italian, in a similar period-style but using the musical signature described above. The music begins with Mary's Theme, ruminative and slow, then abruptly changes to an alla Spagnola-type fast 3/4 - 6/8 meter. It evokes the Spanish-influenced music of Ravel and Falla. Midway through, there's an accompanied recitative for the viola, which figures large in this particular movement, then back to a truncated recapitulation of the fast music. The overall feeling is of a well-made, rather conventional movement in a contemporary Spanish/Italian style. Cassatt's painting, too, is rather conventional. II At the Opera (1880) [Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts] This painting is one of Cassatt's most well known works, and it hangs in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The painting shows a woman alone in a box at the opera house, completely dressed (including gloves) and looking through opera glasses at someone or something that is NOT on the stage. Across the auditorium from her, but exactly at eye level, is a gentleman with opera glasses intently watching her - though it is not him that she's looking at. It's an intriguing picture. This movement is far less conventional than the first movement, as the painting is far less conventional. The music begins with a rapid, Shostakovich-type mini-overture lasting less than a minute, based on Mary's Theme. My conjecture is that the woman in the painting has arrived late to the opera, busily stumbling into her box. What happens next is a kind of collage, a kind of surrealistic overlaying of two different elements: the foreground music, at first is a direct quotation of Soldier's Chorus from Gounod's FAUST (an opera Cassatt would certainly have heard in the brand-new Paris Opera House at that time), played by Violin II, Viola, and Cello. This music is played sul ponticello in the melody and col legno in the marching accompaniment. On top of this, the first violin hovers at first on a high harmonic, then descends into a slow melody, completely separate from the Gounod. It's as if the woman in the painting is hearing the opera onstage but is not really interested in it. Then the cello joins the first violin in a kind of love-duet (just the two of them, at first). This music isn't at all Gounod-derived; it's entirely from the same scale patterns as the first movement and derives from Mary's Theme and its scale. The music stays in a kind of dichotomy feeling, usually three-against-one, until the end of the movement, when another Gounod melody, Valentin's aria Avant de quitter ce lieux reappears in a kind of coda for all four players. It ends atmospherically and emotionally disconnected, however. The overall feeling is a kind of schizophrenic, opera-inspired dream. III Young Woman in Green, Outdoors in the Sun (1909) [Worcester Art Museum, Massachusetts] The painting, one of Cassatt's last, is very simple: just a figure, looking sideways out of the picture. The colors are pastel and yet bold - and the woman is likewise very self-assured and not in the least demure. It is eight minutes long, and is all about melody - three melodies, to be exact (Young Woman, Green, and Sunlight). No angst, no choppy rhythms, just ever-unfolding melody and lush harmonies. I quote one other French composer here, too: Debussy's song Green, from Ariettes Oubliees. 1909 would have been Debussy's heyday in Paris, and it makes perfect sense musically as well as visually to do this. Mary Cassatt lived her last several years in near-total blindness, and as she lost visual acuity, her work became less sharply defined - something akin to late water lilies of Monet, who suffered similar vision loss. My idea of making this movement entirely melodic was compounded by having each of the three melodies appear twice, once in a pure form, and the second time in a more diffuse setting. This makes an interesting two ways form: A-B-C-A1-B1-C1. String Quartet No.3 (Cassatt) is dedicated, with great affection and respect, to the Cassatt String Quartet, whose members have dedicated themselves in large measure to the furthering of the contemporary repertoire for quartet.

These three pieces were originally written for piano but have echoes of Mussorgsky?s most famous work ? Pictures at an Exhibition. The intention is to use each instrument in a virtuosic and solo-like manner. One can hear moments of Pictures in the pieces; The Hut of Babba Yaga comes to mind during In the Crimea and The Village contains a Promenade section not unlike that of Pictures. Still later, the muted horn and trumpet ?clucking? remind the listener of the Ballet of the Chickens.Eine gelungene Bearbeitung der drei Klavierstücke des russischen Komponisten Mussorgsky. The best way to develop ensemble musicianship is through the thoughtful exploration and performance of great literature. In this spirit, Dr. Peter Folliard presents The Bach Initiative, a collection of twenty-six wonderful Bach chorales for instrumental ensembles of any type, size, or level. The Bach Initiative includes each chorale in its original four-part harmonization for all members of the ensemble, giving instrumentalists the unique yet important opportunity to see the full score—and to better understand how each part interacts with the whole. As a result, players naturally develop greater awareness, sensitivity, and intuition. The chorales are intentionally transcribed for flexibility, so any individual may play any part at any time. And while the pedagogical applications are virtually endless, Folliard provides more than a dozen creative variations for rehearsing these chorales that are certain to enhance multiple aspects of ensemble musicianship. The Bach Initiative also offers pedagogical information, including insightful scholarship about intonation, instrument ranges, and appropriate articulation. Folliard also provides a succinct discussion of chord analysis, non-chord tones, and voice leading. The undisputed quality and relative brevity of the Bach chorales make them perfect for the rehearsal room and the concert hall. And the convenient and creative way in which they are presented in The Bach Initiative is certain to inspire new levels of musicianship in bands, orchestras, and other instrumental ensembles of all levels. This is the C Instruments - Bass Clef edition. See G-9931 for the Director's Edition.

Trooper’s Tribunal is a lesser-known Fillmore march that was published in 1905. The Trooper’s Tribunal title was a joke in that Fillmore intentionally misspelled Troupers so that it would appear as a military parade title (Troopers on Review) as opposed to a circus march. This joke resulted from a disagreement between Henry and his Father, J.H. Fillmore, who felt that the Fillmore Brothers Company should only publish music of a religious and serious nature. J.H. Fillmore considered the circus to be beneath the dignity of his son. Trooper’s Tribunal has a wonderful circus flavor and if full of technical requirements of all band members. It is very much a delightful and happy march. As this is a circus march, a tempo between 132-160 beats per minute is acceptable, with the technique of the ensemble defining what is most appropriate.

Piano concertos combine two elements: pure playing and full poetic expression. Virtuosity and romance. Pianistic brilliance, educated in the works in the stile brillant, brought to perfection, but at the same time - a farewell. Both are forms of direct expression of the personality of the composer, which showed itself in them for the first time with so much strength and is manifested in a group of characteristics of forming Chopin's individual style. Piano Concerto in F minor In terms of size, substantially smaller than the E minor concerto and also a different kind of expression: more lyrical, drawn in delicate pastel colours. Especially famous is the second movement, the Larghetto, which Chopin wrote under the inspiration of his first love. Critical source-edition edited by Jan Ekier and Pawel Kaminski based on manuscripts, copies approved by Chopin himself, and first editions. Its purpose is to present the works of Chopin in authentic form. The historical version of the score of the Concerto, based on the semi-autograph and parts from the first editions, forms volume 21 A XVe, and the concert version of the score, recreated by taking into consideration also other sources which present Chopin's intention, constitutes volume 34 B VIIIb.

For this arrangement of Wiegenlied, Johan Brahms? famous melody was used as the starting point and combined with an alpine horn call. The intention here is not to undermine the original but to pay homage to Brahms? ability to write a ?hit? melody. Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on 'Der Freischutz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as 'Preciosa', 'Oberon', and 'Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music; cantatas, odes and other occasional works; stage works; lieder and vocal works; orchestral works; chamber music; music for piano; piano reductions; miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations; works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references.
