Trapeze is essentially programmatic. The introduction and ending have no resemblance to the main body of the piece. Imagine here introductions and preparations made before the actual performance begins. The overall mood is fun and entertaining with a slight sense of trepidation. The continuous semiquaver movements denote the continuous back and forth repetition of the swinging of the trapeze, where the slightly disjointed melody gives a feeling of anticipation. What is coming next? How high? How fast? The conclusion imitates the introduction, very slightly changed, as this time we have dismounting and taking bows.Hopefully both the performers and audience will feel somewhat uplifted.

This piece originated as an introduction to instrumental musique-concrete. In this sort of piece it is common for sound phenomena to be so refined and organised that they are not so much the results of musical experiences as of their own acoustic attributes. Timbres, dynamics and so on arise not of their own volition but as components of a concrete situation characterised by texture, consistency, energy, resistance.This does not come from within but from a liberated compositional technique. At the same time it implies that our customary sharply-honed auditory habit is thwarted. Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s, Eugene Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opera-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline, Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences, New Orleans being popular in the bass brass repertoire. This Bozza piece for bass brass with piano accompaniment was written in 1962. It was orginally composed for bass saxhorn but since the instrument was falling into obscurity, Bozza also adapted it for bass trombone and tuba. New Orleans is influenced by the jazz culture of the city. As music educationalist, Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions, his works reveal melodic fluency, elegance of structure and a consistenly sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.
